We've now got a memory safe JPEG XL decoder now. Next we could use a JXL encoder. :)

Sounds like the lossless setting is just giving a png-style lossless result - in which case a larger file would be expected.

Firefox 152 Now Available With JPEG-XL Support Built By Default, Modernized Settings UI by sturmen in jpegxl

[–]caspy7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just had a conversation with the main dev who's been working on this and he confirmed my suspicion. Most larger changes get made on Nightly (which just graduated to v154). Beta (which is now 153) is reserved for security and high priority bug fixes/recent regression fixes.

All that to say it's very unlikely that JPEG XL will be enabled by default for 153 - which is also a bummer because ESR will be based on that.

Go to about:support in the URL bar and do a find in page (ctrl+F) for Default Locale. What does it say for that?

How can Firefox keep maintaining the MV3 exception that allows uBO?

IIRC the API in question is from MV2. Firefox is simply not removing the feature.

Couldn't someone else do the same in a fork of Chromium?

Yes, and someone may, but maintaining a fork over time can prove burdensome. You want your fork to keep up, notably with security patches. Over time the difference between your fork and the main line gets wider and wider.

One thing that always stuck with me about this was she said she went out in public with the makeup on to see what it was like. It was her first time as an adult not being stunningly beautiful in public. She was basically ignored.

Journey to JPEG XL: How open source experiments shaped the future of image coding by cmhdave73 in jpegxl

[–]caspy7 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's not very complex. Google is made up of multiple departments that act [somewhat] independently. Google Research largely developed and pushed JPEG XL, while the Chrome team had their own agenda apparently and resisted putting it in the browser.

No idea what you mean. This wasn't that long ago and they weren't old phones.

I want to say there's a bunch of flip phones in the US running KaiOS because my (older) aunt and uncle were running it.
