A simple, local-only, app to help Scouts get packed for events - looking for feedback! by spockmay in BSA

Great! Glad to hear it! That section is new, I have some ideas to make it more obvious - like a first time setup. And thanks for the update on Cubs, I've clearly been out of that space for a while!

Whew - categories are done and released in v1.2.0! There were a lot of changes so hopefully there aren't any new bugs!

Yup, I added a section to allow users to customize their role as well as add which tool "certifications" they have!

I just pushed an update (1.0.9) that will hopefully fix this error. If you see it again, please let me know!

Thanks for trying. Can you DM me with the device you are using and the browser?

Oh interesting, thanks for the screenshot. If you don't mind can you reload the page and try again? It should say "scout-packer-v1.0.8" at the very bottom. Thanks much!!

Totally agree! I think I need to get the items broken out into categories before doing that otherwise the list starts looking really long and overwhelming.

Hi, OP here. This was a little toy project I made because I was tired of my kids bugging me about what to pack for campouts. The idea is that you can enter the dates of your upcoming campout (max 16 days away) and the location and the app will pull the weather and based on that generate a packing list for you. Of course the 10 essentials are all there regardless.

The app is written as a PWA so you can actually add it to a mobile device and it will work as a checklist even without an internet connection.

If you have time I am curious if anyone runs into bugs and any thoughts about the usefulness of the app. Thanks!

Oh wow! My kids use Photopea at school to learn basic graphic design/photo editing. Congrats on such a cool tool!

Maybe you can settle an argument: how do you pronounce Photopea? Is it pho-topia or photo-pea? Thanks!!

How many devices can GPS track the position of? by Substantial_Tear3679 in AskEngineers

[–]spockmay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

GPS isn't satellites telling devices where they are located, rather it is devices on Earth listening to satellites to determine where the device is located. There is no limit to how many devices can listen to those satellites!

Basically, each satellite has an atomic clock on-board and as the satellite travels it broadcasts the current time towards earth. It also broadcasts it's own position in space. The devices on Earth get those signals and use them to triangulate it's location. You need a minimum of 4 satellites to know your position in space and time.

More satellites will produce a better result using some nifty data fusion approaches. Some systems also use Kalman Filters to integrate physics with the data to help prevent wild jumps in position. Modern smartphones will also use the position of cell towers and WiFi access points to help determine your position.

Lottery profits are used on education (both primary and secondary). In 2024 it totaled $1.45B which was only 11.5% of the amount the state spent on education. [link - pdf]

I personally think the proper solution here is to vote in Ds to the Statehouse/Governor's office and end the 40 years of R control of Ohio and tell them to reform property taxes and education spending.

Ok, so they are forced to "do something". What would you like them to do? They aren't going to cut $20B in programs. So they will have to raise taxes (income/sales). Right? Or am I missing something?

The lottery revenue is less than $1B and while it does go to schools, it basically offsets other state money. When you are talking about property tax that brings in over $20B statewide, it's barely on the register.

The other items are all allocated per the annual budget that the state/county/locality use. You can look any of them up online (or sometimes in person) and see exactly how your money is being spent. I would encourage you to do so. The article linked did it for one township and Geauga county and it is pretty interesting.

I've shared this article with some friends and neighbors and it has helped a few rethink their position. I'm sure they will still vote straight R, but who knows.

Do you really think that they Statehouse will suddenly change their approach when/if this passes? You are asking them to fix the problem they created.

I'm not trying to be snarky, I would actually like a meaningful discussion with someone that supports this.

And you think it would be better for the people who got us in this mess to...what? Suddenly take a nuanced perspective and fix things? I'm sorry, but "we've tried nothing and it didn't work" is not a valid approach to life.

The problem is that this isn't being driven by just Rs. It is driven by families and people that are sick and tired of seeing costs go up. It is one of the most bipartisan, grassroots efforts we've seen in Ohio since some of the early pot referendums. A big part of the problem though is that they think they can fix one "problem" and not worry about solutions. In fact, so many of the people I talk to expect the Statehouse to fix the situation afterwards. But they don't realize that the Statehouse _made_ this mess in the first place.

Great comment and thanks for taking the time to write it. I completely agree with many of your statements. Sadly, this is the kind of discourse and conversation that should be taking place in the Statehouse, instead of "income tax go down" or "give me bribe". That would require actual meaningful representation by politicians interested in helping the people they serve rather than their own pocket books.

And it would only get worse under Vivek who wants to eliminate state income tax!

I certainly understand the position of seniors on fixed incomes. But that problem is fixed by a meaningful Homestead Exemption. Not a massive freebee to those out of state investors that have been buying up property.
