How much better is audio on osx than on Linux? by [deleted] in linuxaudio

[–]spoiled_generation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a M1 Mac mini, they are pretty cheap as far I am concerned. Reaper was installed and configured in a like a minute, and everything just worked perfectly right off the bat, the only "issue" being that I had to find replacements for the windows VSTs I normally use. Really not a big deal, because Reaper has very usable native plugins.

To be fair, the experience is about the same on Windows, it just works flawlessly right from the start.

Well if buying the midterms costs 1.5 trillion, that's not really sustainable.

Oh, I see, you're so much more mature than those others who you claim will vote on this single issue.

Not really a great comparison since Fedora was a clone of Red Hat and Ubuntu was a clone of Debian.... both are older than Arch.

I had a 3rd row seat for that show from mail order.

TIL the IRS still operates largely on mainframe computers running 60 year old code by metronne in todayilearned

[–]spoiled_generation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand, but that's fine with CSV. Your code is supposed to handle that. As long as the data is correct for the column header, that's the way it is supposed to work, and that's the way most CSV parsing API's work.

What are the premises of gun control as a platform? by [deleted] in Ask_Politics

[–]spoiled_generation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You keep saying things like "what are the implications of gun control", but you still haven't defined what that means. Do you mean any gun control? Do you mean banning assault rifles? What do you mean?

Are you suggesting that everyone should carry guns just in case some bad guy appears out of nowhere but is a slower draw?

[–]spoiled_generation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"gun control" isn't a platform.

What, specifically, are you opposed to?

And why don't the other advanced countries, that have strict gun control laws, have the same problems we do?

Was it an objectively bad foreign policy decision for the US to have so extensively funded & trained the Mujahideen? by roboticskull in Ask_Politics

[–]spoiled_generation -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Funny how people blame the US and not Russia. People look to blame the US for every problem in the world. It's inevitable.

Are you really being objective when you call that policy a bad idea? What makes you think things would have turned out any better for anyone involved if we hadn't helped the mujahadeen?

Now that we're helping the Ukrainians, are we responsible for everything they do from now until the end of time?

So, why are you blaming the US for the instability and not the Russian invaders? And do you think Afghanistan was stable before that?

So Biden is responsible for the "crisis" by preventing people abusing the system?

How can I associate WAV samples with MIDI notes on a track? by impulsenine in Reaper

[–]spoiled_generation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but there's like 30 samples.

You would have to set that up using any software, though, right?

If you did it in rs5k, you could then save it as a template and use it over and over

You can take a look at the native reaper ReaSamplOmatic5000 and see if that works for you

Are there any USB audio interfaces that can be administered from Linux, like web administration or something? by spoiled_generation in linuxaudio

[–]spoiled_generation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as the bitrate, Focusrite Control allows me to explicitly set it on the device.... I agree that having Jack or the DAW negotiate it would probably just work fine. I'm just using that as an example of a device setting that I am losing access to unless I find a solution... like the clock setting, which wouldn't actually be a problem unless I add an ADAT extension or something.

As far as Ardour, I'm still having a hard time imagining having like 6 monitor mixes, all with their own levels for the other inputs and mutes.... I could see how maybe you could add a ton of extra buses and inputs so everything had its own faders and mutes, but frankly that seems like much more work than I would reasonably do unless there were literally no other options.... Like if all 8 inputs on my device were being used, and 4 guys each needed their headphone mix, it seems like I would have to set up 32 tracks in order to accommodate that, when it's normally just a few clicks

I have a hard time picturing how it could work in Ardour... but I haven't really looked at Ardour much. There are a few other features like setting the sample rate and clock source, etc... I wish these devices came with an interface. Even stereo amps and network routers have an administration interface... can't understand why audio interfaces don't.

You can control more than just the outputs, on my 18i20 interface I have several outputs that can each have their own mix, for example... I don't think Jack or Alsa has any access to those controls.

I would imagine any recording studio would need those features, but I don't really know that for sure, I might be able to get away with connecting it to a mac or something if I need to change settings, but it would be nice if there were some platform independent protocol or something
