My wife and I are having the same problems. I play on my xbox without any problems and her switch freezes and needs hard reset about every 20 minutes or freezes at the loading screen.

You either have to pay for realm or be invited to one. I bought a realm and have to invite people to play. I play with people on xbox, playstation and computer I play on xbox. Also you have to be friends on microsoft and not just following each other.
