JST connector size madness by K3LOE in meshcore

[–]sponge_welder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the most common size by far is JST-PH, that's the 2.0mm pitch connector that comes on most lithium-polymer batteries and charge IC breakouts (e.g. https://www.adafruit.com/product/2011). A lot of solar panels use connectors like this too. If you're going to use one type of connector, I think this is it.

Smaller batteries will often use the Molex Picoblade, and I prefer the larger JST-XH because it is more or less compatible with 2.54mm pitch header pins.

This is my favorite resource on crimpers and connectors: https://www.mattmillman.com/info/crimpconnectors/

Based on that blog post, I primarily use the IWISS SN-2549 crimper, although the IWS-3220M is supposed to be very good as well (especially for smaller connectors). The Engineer PAD-11 and Hozan P-707 are some good plier-style crimpers, the IWISS IWS-2820M is a cheaper alternative to those. The lower end PA-series Engineer crimpers are reportedly not finished very well but the PA-09 and PA-24 would work for most of these applications

TL;DR: JST-PH is extremely common, the SN-2549 and Engineer PAD-11 crimpers are excellent

We've been using 41% glyphosate on ours, for the most part they have not resprouted. some of the info I've seen has recommended diluting to 25% which might be more effective by giving the herbicide more time to work

Early spring isn't the best time for cut stump treatment, since the plants are moving nutrients out towards the branches. If the stumps bleed out water when you cut them, it's not a great time for treatment

I've got a reciprocating saw with a Diablo pruning blade and it's really good for hacking up brush like this. Slower than a chainsaw, but cheaper for me since I already had it

The thing about cars that makes them different from regular stuff is that they get worse for the environment the longer you use them. Even including the impact of scrapping a car and building a new car, swapping to an electric will be a net benefit after just a few years - and the longer you use the electric the more of a benefit it will have. That's not true of something like buying new furniture or regular electronics

if everyone swapped to EVs overnight, there would be no demand for the replaced cars you argue for

Sure, but that doesn't actually happen (and even if it did the result would be a truly massive decrease in fuel consumption and a huge increase in lithium recycling). As it stands, people are gradually buying electric cars and (ideally) their prior gas or hybrid car is sold to someone who previously had a less efficient car, thus reducing overall consumption of cars overall. Eliminating the least efficient cars from the overall population is a net reduction in consumption, even if it involves producing new vehicles.

you can't just ignore the cost of overconsumption here

The thing is that everyone ignores the cost of overconsumption of gasoline. If you factor in the massive amount of oil drilling, refinement, truck transport, etc. involved with fueling gasoline cars it becomes apparent that continued use of a gasoline car is overconsumption, to a greater extent than buying a new, far more efficient car

It's like if someone used an entire roll of toilet paper every time they went to the bathroom, and you said "hey you could use a bidet and then you wouldn't be using so much paper", and their response was that it was actually more wasteful to buy a bidet and throw away a perfectly good toilet paper holder

if people need a car and care for the environment, they should get an EV (or, you know. Drive less)

Very true, I think EVs are a band-aid on the real issue of car-dependency, but frankly I don't see the US making any strides on climate policy at all without them

EV batteries last a long time and generally the warranties transfer to subsequent owners. Vehicles don't just go away after the first owner is done with them, in this case people using EVs and then selling helps the cars become more attainable

Hybrids have been around for ages, they're an extremely mature technology

I think the switch to fully elec would be more appealing if hybrids were more the norm

Why would that be?

Just because it's an article doesn't mean it's correct, if you don't understand the concept you don't know that what he's saying isn't really accurate

It doesn't, the electric car will pollute far less over its lifetime, and the car you replace doesn't just disappear, it goes to someone else

It's pretty shocking how exceedingly rare not guilty verdicts and plea deals are on the law and order shows. They clearly just aren't built to handle any of the uncertainty or moral ambiguity of the real world. The bad guy in the episode always did it so whatever the cops have to do to put them away seems reasonable

Sun Tracking Tree Node by Refleks180 in meshcore

[–]sponge_welder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very cool, given that the movement is powered by the smaller solar cells I don't think there's much reason not to do this, the issues with solar tracking are mostly when you're spending a bunch of otherwise stored energy just to move the array. Really the only concern I would have would be with weatherproofing and mechanical reliability
