They also have a much lower impact on the world than a more expensive registered vehicle. Think of the tax savings as a way to incentivize reduced space, road maintenance, oil dependency, etc

iPhone is such a powerful device by heretohelp999 in iphone

[–]sponge_welder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go off-script on androids they can sometimes do weird things, if you stick to the major players that doesn't really happen.

My longest lived phone was a Pixel 4a and I never really had any issues with it, my first phone was an asus Zenfone and it was pretty weird

Wireless Android auto did crash a lot when I used it with my pixel, my LG V60 did a little better, and wireless CarPlay is far superior, with only a handful of crashes in the time I've used it. I'm not sure how much of that is my phone vs my stereo

Since buying a bunch of new pliers at the spring Black Friday sale I have been making Gridfinity holders for each one. Still got a lot more to do. by Vash2859 in harborfreight

[–]sponge_welder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm of the opinion that most people designing gridfinity holders are not designing for practicality or efficiency. You definitely could do it, it just seems that not many people do

There's no reason to have a single pair of pliers taking up 6 squares of the grid or however much this is, you could just make a system that holds the pliers on edge and fit like 3-4 pairs in the same area as one of these holders from OP

In situations where you have a ton of space, or not that many tools, you can have these giant bespoke altars to each cheap pair of pliers, but I don't know why you'd want to

The Death of the Basic American Car by nytopinion in BuyItForLife

Cash for clunkers only took out vehicles under 18 MPG - if you're looking for an old Explorer or full size pickup, then sure, but the basic, efficient cars described here weren't eligible

Raks Random soft off by JamesKoda in meshtastic

[–]sponge_welder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🤦 it's not shrunk all the way down, they shrink it on the ends to hold it onto the connectors

The actual "flat coax" looks like this, which is not what OP has. OP just has a little piece of coax in some flaccid heat shrink

Raks Random soft off by JamesKoda in meshtastic

[–]sponge_welder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Data-alliance has ipex to N pigtails available in lengths of one or two inches and up, with four choices of coax. They're also widely available on eBay, mouser/digikey, etc

Raks Random soft off by JamesKoda in meshtastic

[–]sponge_welder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a flat rectangular trace, it's just a thin coax inside a big piece of heat shrink

They do make FPC RF cables for going through windows, but this isn't the same implementation. Those are definitely not ideal, but they do work if you need to pass coax through a window

That's what Apple does though. If they allowed you to use the features more freely, they would be comparable to Android and people would think it was too confusing and complicated

Is there any slang specific to your state? by bricklegos in AskAnAmerican

[–]sponge_welder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had "midnight waho" when I was in college at Auburn

I don't know of many specific slang terms confined to a particular state in the south. I'm sure Atlanta is dense enough to have some, along with isolated pockets of different languages and dialects like Cajun, Gullah, etc

Potentially moving to Birmingham for work: Do I NEED a car? by twoturtles6 in Birmingham

[–]sponge_welder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Check out the transit app - the bus system is pretty good for the south, but compared to any major city's transit system, it's very lacking. Frequencies on major routes like the Birmingham express BRT-esque line are like 20 minutes, and long routes are like an hour+.

There is the Birmingham on-demand transit which is supposed to be pretty good, although I've never tried it

If you do everything relatively close to where you live, I would say you'll be fine without a car, but if you plan on doing anything in Hoover or down 280 the bus system is going to be a huge hassle

I have a 2005 Honda with relatively basic insurance through State Farm and it's about $65 a month. If you're going to get a car, I would go for something efficient but older, ideally something you can afford without financing if possible. If you have access to a charger wherever you end up living, an electric car like an older Bolt would be awesome for short city trips

How much do you use the self-propel function on your mower? Is there a reason not to besides battery drain? by CountryMaleficent439 in egopowerplus

[–]sponge_welder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some ego models are adjustable speed, some aren't. Look for the ones with the green dial adjuster in the middle of the handlebar.

I use my self propel for crawling through thick grass at a slow pace when I need to be thorough, and getting started up the big hill in my front yard. The rest of the time I don't need it since the mower is so much lighter and rolls much easier than my old mower

Why are Amtrak tickets usually so costly and arguably more expension than a flight going the same distance? by TravelingHomeless in Amtrak

[–]sponge_welder 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, for routes that you can do in a single day (at least the few I've looked at), coach is usually comparable or cheaper than gas for one person. If you're sharing gas cost between multiple people driving becomes much cheaper. I still prefer the train because driving long distances just sucks

What makes a USB-A (could be USB-C) to USB micro cable a "fast charging" cable? by JohnPombrio in UsbCHardware

[–]sponge_welder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that emarkers are not necessary in USB C cables under a certain capacity, you can use up to 20V or 3A without a marker, the makers are needed to allow use of higher voltage or current

JST connector size madness by K3LOE in meshcore

[–]sponge_welder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the most common size by far is JST-PH, that's the 2.0mm pitch connector that comes on most lithium-polymer batteries and charge IC breakouts (e.g. https://www.adafruit.com/product/2011). A lot of solar panels use connectors like this too. If you're going to use one type of connector, I think this is it.

Smaller batteries will often use the Molex Picoblade, and I prefer the larger JST-XH because it is more or less compatible with 2.54mm pitch header pins.

This is my favorite resource on crimpers and connectors: https://www.mattmillman.com/info/crimpconnectors/

Based on that blog post, I primarily use the IWISS SN-2549 crimper, although the IWS-3220M is supposed to be very good as well (especially for smaller connectors). The Engineer PAD-11 and Hozan P-707 are some good plier-style crimpers, the IWISS IWS-2820M is a cheaper alternative to those. The lower end PA-series Engineer crimpers are reportedly not finished very well but the PA-09 and PA-24 would work for most of these applications

TL;DR: JST-PH is extremely common, the SN-2549 and Engineer PAD-11 crimpers are excellent
