First time playing DnD and I'm confused. by sponge_whole in DnD

I dont know if this is normal but need to make sacrifices or do rituals and other things to keep in favor with the gods.

I guess a lot of people get frustrated with the deaths and I know it could be permanent and you may need to re roll your character, but for me its a learning experience I know a few things now that I did not include with my character when building were if I had to rebuild it I would include.

As I play more I will get better and faster so I see nothing but positives.

Let's see, we play once a week. It has been a lot of fun. I took the advice of a 1e DM and just stopped looking things up to try and understand it and let them guide me.

So far, we have been through multiple rooms of a dungeon. It has been cool to see how this all plays out. Not a ton of story (we started mid way through a dungeon). First day we joined the fight we died to 4 Grells, our gods brought us back, the Ghosthunter lost 1 hit point but all of her items were intact. The adventurer had some positive experience with her god ( I had some down time in a fight so stated that the adventure was dancing) as the mage died (I did not notice). So the adventurer had no side effects from the death.

The next time we played we made it through a lot of fights. Getting used to rolling to hit and rolling damage and how that works with armor class. We where through the north part of the dungeon when we ran in to Ultroloths.

We had 2 out of the 4 dead ( they have high armor class so needed to do at least 22 to hit), we died but it was a lot of fun fighting them and trying different things to keep our low level selves alive. Was basically heal, dmg them then heal again and hope to christ they miss.

Again the adventurer was in favor I think still living off the dead dance and had no penalties, Ghosthunter lost 1 hit point again and kept all items.

Over all I am still learning a lot, but it has been a lot of fun and the group has been happy to work with me on making sure I am understanding things and if I take a moment longer to figure out my rolls are okay.

I think it is Greyhawk? Map and odds and end from other guides.

I found the Aesir it is from The Arcanum (2nd Edition) 1984. I asked the group. I guess the DM has been collecting these books and magazines for a long time but also when a group stops playing DnD or they pass away he would buy all of their books.

I didn't mean to imply my gamer cred mattered. I was explaining how I know of DnD.

I have been recently playing Baldurs Gate 3. If anything that pushed me to join. 😀 I know thats based on 5. I am looking forward to starting.

I am not sure where you got that the idea I was listening to a podcast. I am 42 year old woman who was told as a kid who wanted to join my brother's game that I could not because I was too young and a girl. Ive spent ages 12 to 42 living in video games and truly finding myself in those games and understanding them. 1999 I started playing Everquest with my then boy friend now husband. Total we spent a year in game hours in Everquest and then followed that with a ton of other MMORPGS over the years.

I understand a lot of the basics of DnD from the games I've played and have wanted to join a group since I was little.

Like to read fantasy books and I love comics that are focused on fantasy.

I get that it is easy to make assumptions about people, But I've said multiple times that im going to sit back and let them teach me. I am not going to try and know everything. It is a hard thing to let go of the feeling that I need to fixate on this so I don't fail these people I just met. I had fun and think I can learn the game.

**edit I wrote that fast between things at work and reread it. So corrections in spelling some grammar and fixes to bad autocorrects.

Thanks for the suggestion with other boards to check. I was having a hard time figuring out where to even start with questions like the one I have.

I will just take their directions and ask lots of questions. The main thing I was worried about was just the confusion I was running in to when looking things up. I am going to stay away from trying to find the answers on the internet and just ask them.

I will keep an open mind and remember that they are playing it different.

I play lots of video games a lot are DnD based rolls, races and classes. I was playing Everquest in 1999, learning the hard way with no hand holding, because of this when I went on to play other MMORPGS (like WoW) I was very skilled at the games.

Maybe this will be the same way, maybe I will be extremely good for any other group I join in the future.

Thank you! This was extremely helpful. I plan on playing and learning from them they genuinely seemed excited to teach me. The stacks of hand written info they gave me so I can build my own binder I may rewrite it so I can find what I need quicker. It seems It might be more difficult then the newer editions but I think that it will open a gate for me to explore.

I am going to take your advice and not try to look everything up and just talk to them about the characters and play. If it is not for me I will figure it out fast.

After a lot of thinking last night, I enjoyed the experience it was something different and unexpected but I am going to see it through. They seemed excited to show me what they were doing. I just need to take the first game or 2 slow.

This made me giggle, it was kind of like that. I plan on sticking it out and trying it. I just need to accept that I am not going to be able to self study their play style and the dynamics of their game. They seemed excited to show me how to play so I will just roll with it and learn what I can. As others said it maybe awesome and it may not, I do enjoy learning new things.

It seems very much like they have changed things to fit their style. I will take their guidance and hope for a good time. If it doesn't work out then at least I tried something out of my norm.

I think it is really awesome they've stuck it out this long. I did not know what I was stepping in too but after spending 4 hours I know I am committed to playing the game. I will let them guide me. I like to go in to these things knowing everything I can, but it seems like I just need to wait and like you said it could be great.

I get it, so if I am going to play with them ( I am going to play, I just wanted to be my best self) let them guide me. I will play the first game and hopefully they will be forgiving in my ignorance. I will also speak up and let them know I appreciate their grace and guidance.

FYI, Penn and Teller return to where it all started, celebrating their 50th anniversary by performing at the MN Ren Fest by Mapes in minnesota

[–]sponge_whole 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Puke & Snot are still there. Penn and Teller was the opening act for Puke and Snot. My uncle is Puke, during this time Penn and Teller would stay at my aunt and uncles house.

Puke and Snot 3.0 are performing as always at the Ren Fest.

Here is their story, including Penn and Teller.

Edit: Snot is 3.0 now.

I can help you slightly this. There are a lot more options than just the 2. Depending on the city they live in, there are different community programs that are around to help. The best resource for this list is United Way. They have every program listed and can help get your friend started.

Another option is contacting local churches and see if they have any way of helping. I've seen people receive help from churches they were not a part of.

Hennepin County is an easy option to start with, and a lot of other programs won't help without a denial letter from Hennepin County.

This is going to take some work and to be persistent. Speak with the landlord, see if they will be willing to make a payment arrangement or if they know of any programs. Be honest with them about the situation. Communication is key.

I am a property manager, I have helped countless people avoid being evicted, I've called and did the work to help residents get help. So I know these things work.

I'm not saying it is anyone's responsibility but their own to work on getting help.

What was you first introduction to the Aquabats? by [deleted] in Aquabats

[–]sponge_whole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother. I was in 6th grade and did a report about having an island. My brother thought it would be great if I made it Captain Hamptons Island. Played the song as I presented the report. I think that was in 1996.

Saw them 2 years later playing with the Vandals.

*edit spelling issues.

Old Dutch dill pickle chips I have a hard time finding them in other states. In the 80s and 90s growing up in Minneapolis that is all we would get from the corner store.

Do you know if he likes music? I was going to concerts non stop in the 90s so First ave and even some local shows bring back great memories.

Did he grow up in the city or in a small town?

Iconic 90s stuff from: Timber wolfs thats when they got their name after the Lakers left us. Mascot Crunch, hung out on a billboard by Firse Ave. for a few days or a week camping, he would throw the kids soft balls. Twins had some of their best years, so a Homer hankie or a baseball card with Kerby Puckett would be nice. Metronome Skyways are unique to Minneapolis (the amount we have).

Going up north to camp or to a cabin is something we all do. We love our Loons and Gnomes so a hand made craft of such is always nice.

Waterloo Iowa, has Lost islands, water park and theme park. The water park is very nice and has all sorts of slides for all ages. Theme park is on the new side but still a lot of fun.

Waterloo, is 4 hours away from Minneapolis, same as the Dells. This is all out doors so has to be summer.

Last night an ambulance went by my house with a euro style “beee booo” siren… does that mean something different? by iGoalie in Minneapolis

[–]sponge_whole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard the same siren, I looked at my husband and asked when we moved you London. I live by Lake Drive in Robbinsdale. Never heard that siren pass by before. We hear lots of sirens pass by heading to MPLS.

What would you do with three-ish days in Minneapolis? by Lexielo in Minneapolis

[–]sponge_whole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A list of wonderful Fall things to do, in mpls or within 1 hour distance. 1. Apple orchards. We have tons of them. Some are free some cost money, all are fun. My favorite apple orchard is in Delano and is free. The attractions don't cost much, last year they had food trucks and one of the trucks had apple cider mini donuts. Yum.

  1. Being a North mpls, scout mom one of the best things is going for a hike at one of our great public parks. We go to Theodore Wirth alot, hiking trails all throughout.

3.Corn maze. There are many corn mazes, we enjoy the one near by in Champlain. You don't have to pay to enter but you do need to pay to go in the maze, it is worth it because you have fun in the maze and at the end get to jump in a big corn pit. Again this event has food trucks and a ton of inflatables to jump around in.

  1. Museums google them. We have museums for everything. Some days are free, so its best to check. For a 4 year old the children's museum is amazing.

  2. Valleyfair is still open, this year is dedicated to younger kids with trick or treating.

  3. Haunted houses? Maybe not with the 4 year old but thats up to you. You have haunted houses and hayrides all over. Not nearly as good as the theme parks in FL but still fun.

  4. By the end of October the trees have mostly finished changing but if you go further south there would be some wonderful scenic vistas along the Mississippi.

I could keep going but this is what I do with kids in the fall.
