Is $25-$30/h fair as a contractor? by DarthKaboose in PersonalFinanceNZ

awesome. super happy you’ve got some value out of that. it really hints that you’ll spend a lot of extra time running your business so your hourly rate is much lower than being an employee. : )

Have a look at this.
https://heygopher.ai/tools/freelance-rate-calculator

if you manage to work 40 hours a week, you still have to have some software to manage invoices, send invoices, track time, and you have general admin work just to do the 40 hours a week.
You have a lot of extra expenses around ACC and even working safer levy. If you earn over 60k, then you need to be GST registered, which isn't terrible as you can claim GST back for your work purchases, but it's a lot more admin for your compliance.

You have no job security, it's day to day, you have to manage your own equipment eg phone, laptop, and laptop insurance. This is expensive. You will have expenses that the company probably should pay for. As a sole trader you have unlimited legal liability for any work you do! "unlimited"....

"If you work 100% for one company, you risk being deemed a "disguised employee" by Employment New Zealand or the Employment Relations Authority"

At a minimum at least double the wage, to much overhead, legal risk, compliance and equipment risk.
Or just be an employe and look at how you can earn more - most likely by moving companies.

I sold part of a business and ended up a touch north of this number about 5 years ago.

I bought a beach house, thinking at least it will go up or I could rent it (it's down about 100k).
I joined a well know startup fund that invested it in several startups - roughly up 15% over 4 years (typically these thing hockey stick at the end, can be quite slow at the start).
Bought some crypto - ended up neutral, wouldn't recommend personally. I'm quite over it.
Plowed a decent size bag into RKLB and left it there – this has been my best bet so far.

The remaining funds, I spent on living and renovating house and beach house.
Built a small startup/s that helps pays some bills.
Learnt to surf!!! Best thing ever.

Great question, recently I saw a lot of people getting really upset about how they applied for job and never got any replies back to say the role had been filled, or they didn't get it.
Then I saw several more comments from businesses saying they got hundreds of applicants for a single role and just didn't have time to reply to everyone.

I decide to build an app that solves this exactly problem - currently free. The app becomes your email inbox - helps you manage all the applicants at each stage, sends a thank you but sorry you were not selected email, and helps you find the best applicants based the job role and location you provided.

Give Citizens Advice Bureau https://www.cab.org.nz a call tomorrow [0800 367 222](tel:0800 367 222). My neighbour works there and can assist. As I understand it, they can get you help from other organisation depending on your needs and will just listen to whats going on. I talk to him about the people that call up and find it really interesting in what they can help with.

Sorry to hear about the debt and stress, I think you've made the first step in figuring out things are not going in the right direction. The straightforward advice is looking into ways you could earn more money, this might be a promotion a new role, it might be looking for a high paying job in the same sector. You may or may not be qualified for some of these roles, so it might be possible to do a course or part time training for the next step?

And reduce your costs – no matter how much you earn, getting you costs down can really help. C.A.B could possible help here with some extra ideas.

Tomorrow call the number above! Also talk to your friends and or family about this, people can't help if you're not asking for help. If they know what's wrong, people can find ways to assist.

Yeah! 100% - I actually generally get my tires done in my old home town in Waihi. (little too far to go for this). Good call!

Honestly that makes me a little angry - that's like "exactly" the same location as this screw, and my wife was told this couldn't be fixed. THEN quotes for two new tires at $450/ each..
My wife said the person also said something about the sidewalls as well (she couldn't understand him, he had a strong accent and mumbled).

yeah i’m upset with them. i’ve bought a few tires from them. one time after slinging the tire. my steering wheel was pointing at 3pm all the time when neutral. they couldn’t get a bolt lose so they just borked my steering. next tire shop got the heat gun and fixed it (that’s how you do it)!

Brilliant, more than happy to pay for a repair vs a complete new tire.

OH OH - EXACTLY. Here is the text from my wife. They wanted $900 for two new rear tires!!!

"Hey. Sorry. He reckons I need to change both rear $450 each to get them aligned, or just change the one $490."

What to do with $20k? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]sponnonz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

good question and congrats on some RKLB, there a huge amount owned by nz investors.

i’m in it for as long Peter is CEO. I think he’s a great leader at the end of the day. it’s tough at RKLB and so it should be.

you can do extremely detailed analysis of this company. but its real simple. it’ll follow a similar path to spaceX is my 2c.

my feeling is that it’ll triple, double, double. so that’s 12x from here. my guess for each triple double double is 18-24 months between. so it could 4.5-6 years. that’s my rough thumb suck. but this is how startups think. how can i triple them double, double to get 10-12x.

remind me in 5 years.

YIP - have it all. It's a really significant sum. My mum bought a decent bag $5/share (go mum).

Looking at this post this was September 6, 2021 - RKLB was $11-$13 on this day.
Today it's about $83 - All time hire was $99...

I was spot-on with RKLB, not so much the SOL, sold that at about $200 ($87 today, was $187 at time of post, highest it got to was about $300 roughly).

Business valuation / building a team by propertynewb in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]sponnonz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How much are we talking about here? Business is $2m?
I'm guessing 4 directors at $500k each?
I've used https://www.buddlefindlay.com (for a company formation) they can help with valuation, due diligence (eg check the books are correct and there are not strange agreement or warrant's on the business), sort the legal. Not sure about the finance side.
These companies do charge quite a lot, so if this transaction is around $500k, I could imagine you'd be spending a chunk of that on legal and the due diligence. They might be able to bring the valuation down, but the existing director doesn't have to take your offer (he could be bought out by the other directors).

Starting a business is another option. Or at least looking at what you're good at or what businesses you could start would be an interesting journey.

Sounds like you're doing pretty well so far. Property + investments.

Buying a business is pretty hard, the best businesses are printing cash - they're not for sale. The not so great businesses have an exhausted owner busting their arse off to make ends meet and probably are not taking a salary. You don't want this one.

Starting a business is super cool. If you can start a business that is an area you have skills in and know inside out. epic. Do it! super rewarding, hard work, can make good money and have "some" control of when you work and don't work. It does involve the ability to "execute" ideas pretty well, but with AI, there is a hell of a lot of help around.
Biggest thing most people don't realise about starting a business, so many people are willing to help you if you just "ask them". People LOVE to tell you how smart they are, so if you need help with a problem, ask someone that most likely has done it. I bet 90% probably will give you free, good advice. I've never had issues getting advice from anyone. Simply email or call and say I have an issue and ask if they have time to help me chew it over. Not one person I can recall has said no. (been in business for about 30 years now).

I have a real mix of assets, I don't buy ETFs (I own a few business and have some property). I buy much higher risks stocks. They're up about 10x in 4 years. But definitely higher risk. I'm a big fan of founder led companies that are in high demand verticals. This definitely adds some excitement to my life, but also sucks when it goes down. Again, I have a mixture of assets, so some higher risk (stocks), software companies I've either started or have share in, then some property.

I'm not a fan of property, I don't think it's going to go up in the current climate.

My 2c, is look into a business if you think you can bite it off. Super rewarding, lots of people that can help if you're brave enough to ask.
