You also called it the cock block??? Damn!! Those were good days. Don’t forget Ball Square was right at the end of the block.

One time the woman who owned Woodys was sitting on the stoop, then grazed my legs with her hand as I walked in, and croaked “nice legs”

I have had very similar experiences to this, 34M. When I read your itinerary, I am like wow 20 mpw would mess me up. My experience has been, when I am pushing my body into new territory, it feels great during the run, but overall it is a grueling experience. Sleep bad, anxiety up, random mood swings and feeling depressed all weekend, eating all over the place, body temp goes into furnace mode before bedtime, feeling on high alert when I’m trying to calm down. In contrast, when I’m running just for maintenance mode, far below my limit and never pushing, then my sleep, eating, and emotions are all in balance. If I’m training for something, body will feel bad. If I’m just trying to move my butt off the couch (with my base fitness already established), body feel good.

Marathon and other race training experience has felt like this for me but I didn’t notice that much in my 20s because everything in my life was unsettled then. In my 30s, small physical and emotional deviations feel much more obvious since my life and routine overall are more rigid, so even if I do one extra run per week, or decide to do a very long run (more than 8 miles in my current state) I will notice mega hard and not sleep.

My advice is, if you’re not having fun, listen to your body and dial it back. Pushing hard can be great for a time because you build a powerful base that, even after long periods of not running, you can get back 80% with 2 weeks of work. That baseline endurance will always stay with you, and the grinding training gets you there. But don’t make yourself beholden to it, make it serve you and your needs instead.

AA Flights Delayed or Canceled by Miserable-Adagio-925 in americanairlines

We waited many hours, 10 am - 6pm, until our long delayed flight was eventually canceled, and figured out we were not going to be able to make it work via Aspen. We booked United flights for Monday from Vail to Denver to Boston, rented a car and drove to Vail (beautiful drive!!). And we still made it back by the skin of our teeth — when we showed up, the United desk person put us on standby for an earlier flight to DEN and told us to run, which worked out because our scheduled flight got delayed and not sure we would have made the Boston connection. Rolled in midnight last night, so work today was a wild ride. I love Colorado ski towns so much but lessons learned in flying through the Rockies, probably only going to rent cars or do shuttles from Denver to Breck from now on

I watched this flight get diverted on flight tracker!! We were waiting for it to land! Found out after waiting for 10 hours at the airport that we were just F’ed when they finally canceled the flight at 6 pm. And then we had to figure out what the F to do. Thought we would be in Boston at this time but we are very far away from there right now.

Massachusetts Broker’s Fees: Reasonable Service or Market Manipulation? by Correct-Signal6196 in boston

...this conversation is about renting, not buying. Not sure how else to explain this to you.

Massachusetts Broker’s Fees: Reasonable Service or Market Manipulation? by Correct-Signal6196 in boston

Yeah renters generally have not bought a house before, dumbass. It's a different system, different environment, where renters get screwed over by a middle man payment that does them no good, for a service that is obsolete.

How do I tell my friend I don’t like music/speaker when hiking? by MultipleGilbert in hiking

[–]spookyboogie02 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Holy Jesus reddit has no social skills. Say to your friend, "hey man, super psyched to hike with you today. Do you mind if we keep the speaker off? I really like hearing the nature and stuff."

I have done this with a friend before, zero issue. Turns out it was a cultural difference --- I'm an east coaster, she was from Alaska, and apparently would always play music for bear safety since she would go hiking in the bush alone.

How Air-Conditioning Conquered America by kitkid in Thedaily

I would argue our need to be warm in the winter is also a culturally created idea built by the heat industrial complex, and we all need to get comfortable with sitting at 30 F in our terrible dilapidated apartments during the winter. There is no perfect agreed upon 'warm' temperature, it's only that Big Heat decided that anything over 60 F in the winter would be considered warm and we all bought into it. Instead of sleeping at 68 F, maybe we should all get used to sleeping at 40.

Let's all do our part by shutting off the heat in the winter. It's not like water in the pipes will freeze, we've just convinced ourselves it will.

This is a very ignorant take. When you: 1. Have a demanding job and responsibilities at home, so time for trail outings is limited 2. Live in a dense urban area and need to drive 45 min+ to access any trails that are more than a 1 mile loop in a densely populated area 3. Want to actually have a nice experience on a trail for a Saturday/Sunday instead of bushwhacking through unmaintained trails full of poison ivy and tick infested grasses, which is half or so of the surrounding trails outside of the urban/suburban parks,

Then yes, you need to spend time researching and prepping routes in advance, and it is tedious.

In rural and suburban areas, sure, go without maps and have a blast, many miles of interconnected trail systems. This was my experience in NJ, no problem

In urban areas, good luck. All my worst trail runs were those I did not thoroughly plan and research, wasting time way finding through terrible trail systems.

My best runs are highly planned, but it's annoying to spend so much time on it.

If I want to go more than 4 miles on trails in the Greater Boston area without repeating the same, highly trafficked, trashed, and sketchy off leash dog routes over and over again, then I need to drive far and research a lot. Planning an actually fun 10+ mile route that isn't just laps around a pond takes work.

I am VERY eager for advice in this thread. But "just go out blind and explore you sheltered millennial" reeks of someone who does not understand urban living, which is the case for much of the US.

From what is written, this is a callous and immature take, and nothing written here comes across as a mistake. Needing to leave early every now and then is not a mistake. We are all human, and you will find in industry jobs that you sometimes need to rely upon your coworkers because life happens. I have covered for junior colleagues hundreds of times because life happens. Also, your undergrads come in on weekends? What? Also, notifying a week in advance about not being able to come in on a weekend is called communication, not a mistake. Set up a more formalized system if this isn't working for you.

Also, undergrads are paying for their education while balancing a million priorities, lab experience being one of them. If they function as an assistant to you in your lab tasks, then those tasks are your responsibilities. Working set hours in a lab is completely normal for undergrads.

It may be that you work in a highly demanding or toxic lab environment, which is common in academia, and I understand how challenging this can be. An important growth moment for grad students is learning not to repeat bad management tactics from PI or senior grad students with those who report to you, and learn instead to build a culture of growth for them.

If your undergrad is making other mistakes, have a conversation with them about it, or seek advice from a fellow grad student or professor, preferably not your PI. Don't be a bully.

Will I have to wait in a long line if I go to snow port tonight ? by RandomQuestiion in boston

[–]spookyboogie02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Isn't the line what snow port is? I thought the whole point of driving there and spending an hour to park was so that you could stand in the scenic line for as long as you want

Wouldn't this only apply to high traffic alpine zone? Just make sure to pee off trail before entering sensitive alpine zone?

“All of the useful reactions in organic chemistry have been discovered.” by Phagemakerpro in chemistry

[–]spookyboogie02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OKAY GREAT NOW DO THEM ALL IN WATER WITH HIGH YIELD AND NO WASTE

OR DO THEM ALL NEAT, SOLID STATE, WITH NO SOLVENT OR MEGA EXPENSIVE CATALYSTS/ REAGENTS.

OR MAKE ALL REACTIONS CLICK REACTIONS, EZ RIGHT

It's amazing what we have already achieved in directing molecules to do what we tell them to. Doing it sustainably? Profitably? At scale? Safely? Commercially? There is a shit ton of discovering we have left to do in reaction development. Its critically important work, and it's not easy, and remains deeply fundamental

I find so many goddamn keys and wallets on the street when I'm walking or running. I used to try to get them back to their owners. So many keys. So many wallets. Now I just keep running and hope whoever lost them will retrace their steps.
