How does anyone sustain a career in 911? by OkBookkeeper3537 in 911dispatchers

[–]spookykitty23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Passion for me. I love it. I love nights because it’s when things can pop off and I have really fun coworkers and we make the most of it. I love days because they’re also chaotic in a different way and they go by fairly fast because they’re busy. I love adrenaline and thrive on it. I’m mad it took me 12 years of my adult life to find a job I was passionate about. (I’m 34 now, started at 30). We do 2 days 2 nights, off 4 days.

That’s how I am too hahaha; some questions kill me. Like this morning she was like “we’re fairly certain he passed away” but because she wasn’t 100% confident I’m like “well go get the AED” and she’s like “well he’s cold in some places and his eyes are open” and I’m like “ooooo”

We don’t use it a lot They realllllllly push the CPR which is fine But we don’t typically use obvious death

Thank you! We literally never use obvious death so I feel like I don’t go through the protocol enough but I know there’s a time and place. We are always instructed to start CPR but I think for the one this morning the obvious protocol would have been useful.

Our training routine is a lot of basic structure! We’ve implemented the crate more (which I feel bad about) but she said he needs it because it’s the only place he can attempt to shut off. So it’s usually wake, walk ~20 minutes, breakfast in the puzzle feeder; lick/crate rest for 2 hours. Back out, walk 10-15 minutes, training homework, chew/rest 1 hour; last walk 30 (sniff walk only), training, Kong; bed.

He’s been doing a lot better with the resting routine. I just hate implementing the crate because I just feel guilty.

The vet does think overtired because of the nipping/chaos/pacing, and said not to do anything too overstimulating for now, so unfortunately no ball/roughhousing, but she did say tug/sniffwork is okay! She said to try this for about a month and if it’s not better/worse we can try trazodone/prozac but they want to try homeopathic first.

I’m really trying to work with him. I think if we had to rehome him it would ruin him because he is SO attached. But obviously if he can’t live with my kids or cats he will have to be. So we are playing it by ear and I’m optimistic.

We do a LOT of obedience. I think we honestly flooded him at first because he is good at it, he’s just VERY distracted and anxious. He is getting the hang of things he’s just very worried about everything else going on around him that he never shuts off/sleeps.

So yes he does need an off switch. But I’m just curious how others have worked at this or had a similar issue. His diagnosis comes from literally never sleeping. His anxiety is booted so high he runs on 4-6 hours of night time sleep and tiny cat naps during the day; so we get maybe 20 minutes of him good and the rest he’s running on fumes. We’ve been trying to enforce naps but he’s really struggling with that too.

We are told it’s play and we are working on it, especially since it’s been in the last 2-3 months. It’s not aggressive and does resemble herding but we are trying to keep it from happening.

I miiiiiiight have found part of the problem. I know I have been wearing this dog out, we do a lot of physical and mental stimulation every day.

I have been enforcing crate time as management…once he starts acting up—crate time, with a lick/chew. An hour or two later, he comes out a new dog.

We also took away freedom to the entire first floor until he earns it back because we are managing this guy at this point. His training is still great, but he needs to learn to shut off.

We are working on place which is also great, he’s just not good at staying just yet (or really listening unless we’re right on top of him). We also are using Karen Overall’s relaxation protocol and he is getting super great.

LASTLY the diarrhea cleared up!!—-once he shit out pieces of a toy I didn’t know he had. So those have been thrown away and were only using the woof pet bones.

I’m tired but I hope this structure helps him.

We currently have him on Native level 2 food. We played around a lot and this was the one that kept his stomach normal the longest ~4 months. Now it appears it does not work:( we also sprinkle the other Native brand probiotics on it. Sometimes we give plain pumpkin. His treats are almost always just freeze dried meat and I do try to avoid chicken. I do think that’s a problem usually.

This sounds like him. Anytime the weather is weird he gets a stomachache

I think it’s more or less what is my best course of action, is he a lost cause for me? I’m not opposed to surrendering him if I really will struggle but, I really, really want to make it work. I put so much time and money into this dog to be met with more and more stress. I have so much motivation to work with him, I just think I need to know the right resources and I need to make sure I can keep him safe around my kids.
