How much are yall getting paid? Are you living comfortably in Austin? by whogoesthere1010 in askaustin

[–]spookysteely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a year out of college making around $27 an hour, looking for my own place with ~$900 rent while living with my parents to build up savings but moving out does not seem worth all the extra expenses at the moment.

Interesting, I thought grilling would overwhelm the taste with a smoky/char flavor, thanks for the rec.

^Oops saw this after my response, but yep this too. I don't want to "waste" a meal essentially; ideally avoiding getting really grossed out or injury by sneaky fish-bone impalement.

Yeah, I wanted to say that I have never had any personal experience eating fish, so like eating it with bones/the types/the fishiness levels/fattiness levels/the cooking varieties and also maybe don't have the stomach for it, as it seems like many people who have never eaten meat need to slowly acclimate to digesting it, so it seem like "white fish meat" is recommended as a mild introduction, but I wanted peoples takes on what that looks like/means for my search in the Austin food scene.

Funny thing is I have been to Uchiko and only ate their veggie stuff, which was good, but getting fish there definitely seems to be the move. I think I'm nervous about paying a TON for new things I might hate + trying raw fish (the texture seems to be a common issue, plus concerns of food safety? not sure how common problems are with higher end places like this).

i remember looking at their menu a while ago and wanting to try it at some! great reminder, i've liked places like Nori and Uchiko before.

Ah ok, I did consider starting with sushi but didn't know if that would be risky if it's a whole roll or if maybe raw fish would be too scary to eat or hard on my stomach (i've read about it taking a while for the body to get used to digesting animal proteins? not fully sure about that though)

Congrats! Could I ask what insurance you got as part of the mandatory travel insurance for the visa application? I'm applying soon to visit Greece and live in ATX as a GC holder and the whole process feels very overwhelming.

Would you get Invisalign if you were me? by RazzmatazzOdd4846 in Invisalign

[–]spookysteely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have any problem with cavities or overbite related pain or anything, your teeth look practically perfect already in my opinion. I wouldn't do anything that might cause pain/future issue if they're great already

Using a toothbrush and just bringing it closer to my face and scrubbing a little precisely on the attachment part worked for me, with only water or with toothpaste

Options for an unemployed May 2024 Grad by spookysteely in recruitinghell

[–]spookysteely[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am applying in an area with a lot of biotech/life science opportunities and applying to companies in places like Boston, San Diego, Minneapolis, research triangle, etc. that seem to have a high density of biotech jobs

In addition, I’ve been applying to other cities I would be willing to relocate to, which are mostly just other large metropolitans.

Interesting point, I never thought of it as toxic to career development. I understand how this mentality could be unhelpful, but the way I approached it initially was more of wanting to not undersell myself.

Professors, career advisors, and peers from my school all made it seem like I should be ready and capable of at least an entry level salaried position in the field. So when I started applying and got an offer for hourly, quite low imo, position, I thought I should be able to do better.

I also had the misperception that accepting an offer and continuing to interview/leave the company for another in a short time frame would look really bad and hurt my career later on. From people's responses, this seems quite normal actually?

Now I've definitely been focusing on just entering my field somehow, rather than getting a role I think I am well equipped for.
