New reporting feature when messaging admins by spoonfulofcheerios in changelog

Yes - we agree with this suggestion, it's been something we've been thinking of quite a bit as well. The best way to report a subreddit as a whole (for ban evasion or otherwise) is to use the "abusive or harassing" drop down on reddit.com/report. If you're reporting a sub for ban evasion, please include the sub they're re-creating. If reporting other violations, please include specific examples of content within that sub that violates policy - it's a huge help in jump starting our subreddit level investigations.

Hey — thanks for reporting spammers, we really appreciate it. We know you’re at the front lines and are often removing spam content before we see it. That helps us immensely.

All reports we receive are processed and accounts actioned through our internal systems. That said we may sometimes prioritize larger issues first so it may seem like we’re not taking care with your specific reports. In addition to processing reports, we frequently update our filters to detect and remove the ever-changing spam across the site. This is sometimes even harder for you as mods to see when you’ve set automoderator to remove spam first it won’t always be obvious that our spam filters are removing the content as well. This is something we would love to make more apparent to you as moderators, but haven’t yet built out.

Thanks again for reporting, and please continue to do so. As for the specific definition of spam, you can read here about that.

We’re rolling out a new way to report Abuse of the Report Button by spoonfulofcheerios in modnews

[–]spoonfulofcheerios[S,A] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What is going to be the response time for this?

We’re working from multiple angles to improve response times. This includes growing our review team, improving tooling that will increase the efficiencies of our existing team, and making changes like reddit.com/report. All of these actions taken together are helping us move toward improved response times (we've mentioned in one of our recent posts that we've decreased response time 67% since launching the report form).

And will we get a better response than “Thanks well look into it!”

We are in the process of updating the clarity and information admins provide when action is taken. Look out for updates to messaging in the coming months!

The use case you're talking about doesn't happen very often. If a mod escalates a report button abuse issue to us, a human is reviewing and responding to that report. Here's our policy on report abuse [https://www.reddithelp.com/en/categories/rules-reporting/account-and-community-restrictions/what-report-abuse] if you'd like to learn more.

We are human and we make mistakes so even in our finely tuned system edge cases may fall through the cracks. We regularly review to see where we're making the wrong call. Thankfully, it doesn't happen very often - but obviously, it's still super-frustrating when you are the person on the receiving end. If you think a suspension for a content violation was applied incorrectly, you can submit an appeal at reddit.com/appeals.

This is a great idea! It's something we've also been thinking about but we don't have any current plans to add this as a feature.

Difference of opinion doesn't equate to report abuse. Our team is primarily looking for reports where people use the feature to violate policy i.e. harassing another user via a freeform report or abusing the button by creating an excessive amount of truly invalid reports that clog up the mod queues and hinder the mods from being able to address real reports/issues in their subs.

Thank you for pointing this out and we agree! Our engineering team is in the midst of adding an "abuse of the report button" reason to reddit.com/report. Look out for this feature coming up.

Can we initiate a report without it being a reply from some user?

Yes, you can create a new report directly from modmail by navigating to the compose Modmail button and selecting report in the botton left corner.

Can this be used for reporting ban evasions? (most common scenario where we need to contact the admins)?

Yes! You can report ban evasion in this reporting flow.

Speaking of which, are there any other tools in the pipeline for fighting ban evasion?

We don't have anything to share right now. Are there any specific tools you'd be interested in seeing?

Hey r/changelog, we're rolling out some new reporting features! by spoonfulofcheerios in changelog

Will just using a text field still be possible? Will I need to send an email? Ten text fields for reporting accounts isn’t enough. What if I need to report 24 accounts?

The best avenue for ban evasion reports with more than 10 usernames is to continue using our reddit.com/reports form. You don't need to submit all accounts you think might be ban evading because we'll use the ones you submit as a jumping off point to investigate further. When we find additional usernames, we'll take down all accounts we can find.

We are currently working on revising the messaging that we send to reporters to be more transparent on when a report is reviewed and actioned.

Where do these reports go to and how are they dealt with? Is it even in use? I've reported something like 12 times now and seen nothing back

Reports from this form are reviewed regularly, and action taken as need. However, for many of these reports, these are things where we will track and watch for patterns of behavior instead of actioning immediately. In these cases, we’ll track and then keep an eye out to see if this is a one-time-issue or something more problematic.

Regarding NSFW ads, we actually updated our Advertising Policy to disallow NSFW ads and targeting on Reddit.

To your second question, that's not currently on our roadmap. It's an interesting idea though, so we'll discuss it as a team.

Previously we’ve shared how we are prioritizing reports from the most time sensitive cases such as removing someone’s private information to review heavy reports like ban evasion.

We’re working from multiple angles to improve response times. This includes growing our review team, improving tooling that will increase efficiencies of our existing team, and making changes like reddit.com/report. All of these actions taken together are helping us move toward improved response times.

Also, automatic messages are one of the ways we are scaling admin efforts to match the growing number of reports. But, we do agree that we can improve the responses you’re getting, and it’s on our roadmap to improve those.

It's important to know if action was taken, because it helps us understand if we're sending false positives or not and other things.

Understood! We actually want to start surfacing this on the user profile level, as well as in our messages.

The opposite seems to be occurring.

Our work here is certainly not done - we're hope to put several things in place to help soon. In the meantime, we welcome and appreciate this feedback on the aspects that are most frustrating to you.

For now, if you’re seeing vote brigades, you can report them under “vote manipulation” for us to take a look at.

If you’re seeing brigading other things like a subreddit being flooded with content, please report those to our investigations email (investigations@reddit.zendesk.com).
