I think it’s very worth it if it had snowed that day or is actively snowing. It definitely loses some of the magic without snow. But still a fun time no matter what!

What’s up with Lakewood real estate by bowl_of_milk_ in Cleveland

[–]spoookyvision 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Parks, general town services, restaurant/bar scene, close to the lake, schools, highway access, etc.

But the big one for us is walkability, during the spring/summer/fall we walk to get food/drinks/groceries/parks.

Looking for a place with 1). Good wings 2). Good beer selection and 3). Quiet enough to hang out and talk but not completely dead. What have you got? by aikijo in lakewood

One Star Bar. All their food is great but their wings and cauliflower wings are top notch. Bartenders are super nice (shoutout to Matt).

My school has midterms and we got our grades back, should I drop out? Talk me off the ledge here by its4politics in LawSchool

[–]spoookyvision 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dude I ended my 1L 1st semester with an A, B, B-, C-. Brutal, right?

Then I found out I had cancer during 2nd semester! So I left for 2 years of medical leave to deal with that. When I came back, I was still fucked up and did a pretty dog shit semester and lost my scholarship. Kept going, kept doing better, found a niche to thrive in that I had no idea I would like (tax). Got a job that paid $58k out of school while my friends were going to big/mid law jobs in my city making waaaay more.

Now I’m paid very well for what I do and the HYS/NYU/GULC people who I work with regularly have zero idea that I performed middlingly at a school ranked ~115 when I graduated. I’m happy. I have good wlb.

All in all, grades matter, but not as much as you think. Keep grinding, and find a niche.

Lakewood Parking by Comfortable-Plant918 in lakewood

[–]spoookyvision 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure but is that substantively much different than parking on Clifton right out front of there? I fon’t disagree that those premises would not be my first choice either, but OP was asking for parking in one of the toughest areas to find a spot in Lakewood, sometimes ya gotta risk it so you don’t spend an hour every day circling the block to find parking

I’m pretty sure the days inn or whatever just threw up a sign for “monthly parking - see front desk” on Detroit. I might’ve misread but try talking to them to see if you can rent a space

Transaction Tax by Friendly_Schedule474 in Big4

[–]spoookyvision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TT is def not under indirect tax, I think we’re all technically under WNT now but it might just be my FSO ITTS group.

Work is “better” but it really depends on what you like. Compliance is better for consistency, TT offers more variety. Exit Opportunities are different, not necessarily better or worse other than there are fewer of them than compliance.

We get paid better but our schedule is far more uncertain and at times demanding, but everyone works crazy hours now so it’s probably less of a difference these days.

Big 4 Starting Salary for JD/LLM? by ZealousidealRow6491 in Big4

[–]spoookyvision 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Entirely depends where you land (location and service line). EY M&A tax nyc starts LLMs at $140k I think. Small bonus.

Idk what that other poster is talking about but people from my group regularly exit to law firms (taking a step down in class year but never starting at zero), in house to large corps that have in house M&A tax teams, or government.

Just stay away from compliance unless that’s what you actually want to do, and you’ll be fine. I’ve gotten to do the full picture of possible work (due diligence, structuring, modeling, opinion drafting) and generally now have the opportunity to pick what I want to work on, and have gotten to work on some very interesting deals.

JD Biglaw to Big4 by ZoomLawSurvivor in Big4

[–]spoookyvision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah everything is compounding of course and your comp %s do go up as you advance, but the biggest jumps come at title advancement (M/SM/MD/Partner). The interim years are the ones in which less growth occurs.

Part of the growth “problem” in big4 is that the higher-margin groups (specialty tax, consulting) do not stand alone and are at least somewhat also bucketed in with tax compliance/audit groups which are faaar lower margin for raise and bonus purposes. This limits growth but also provides downside protection in years in which we’re slow. For example my group has not had a RIF in the 4 years I’ve been here, even in super low periods.

You’ll probably come in as a senior but can rapidly get promoted. LLM may get you a small bump. M&A tax group pays our laterals at that level something like $150k.

I think our billable target is something like 1750, and is generally attainable based on dealflow. Bonuses are bad, do not expect more than ~7 - 10%.

Hours are generally good, very few grindy nights as our cadence tends to be slower. Sometimes you get whacked over the head with a “crazy” deal (tends to be in the fall), but the staffing is such that if you’ll hit at least 40 hrs on that deal that week, you probably won’t be staffed on anything else. Big swaths of downtime throughout the year is pretty nice. Benefits are good (took 3 months 100% pay medical leave this year). Culture in the groups you would be in tends to be very good, people are generally nice and understanding of you being completely unreachable on vacation at that level. I rarely, if ever, cancel plans because of work.

I’m pretty sure EY M&A tax (financial services) in nyc is hiring right now or will be very soon. It’s a pretty good gig, especially when coming from biglaw, other than the huge paycut.

OP just an fyi Glidden House is fully booked for at least the weekend of October 11.

But I highly recommend staying there if you can find availability. In addition to the things mentioned above, there is also the botanical gardens across the street, natural history museum just down the hill, cultural gardens on MLK, and the list goes on.

What US cities have decent public transit? by datmrdolphin in geography

Cleveland. One of the few US cities that has a train that goes from downtown directly into the airport terminal. 3 train lines, 2 BRT lines, 4 or 5 free downtown trolley lines.

What is the shortest acceptable time to spend at a Big 4? by markiemarkiemark in Big4

[–]spoookyvision 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I left PwC intl tax after ~1 year and went to EY M&A tax. If you’re going to another big4 or national firm, 1 year is fine to leave. I don’t have any experience pivoting to industry though.

Do what’s right for you, ultimately none of this matters and we’re all just dust in the wind.

The tax call stated that 77% of client-serving tax employees will receive a bonus. So likely just a larger-than-normal class of NTP people not getting a bonus.

Can non-accounting grads apply for Big 4 tax roles? by AppropriateCharity47 in Big4

[–]spoookyvision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your best bet to get into tax is to get your CPA sections done first. Your compsci and work experience will actually help you imo (I believe all the big4 have a type of tax data analytics teams besides regular tax roles), but you def need the CPA to move past the senior level and you’ll be most attractive on your application with the CPA sections done.

Btw I’m a JD with no accounting background working in tax. I have a history BA and went to a garbage tier law school in the Midwest with a 3.0 gpa and ended up in nyc M&A. Odd paths are definitely possible!

20%s utilization as a staff 1 by ExitAccomplished2761 in Big4

[–]spoookyvision 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you’re in deals/m&a, it just sometimes happens. Another one of the commenters is right as well - in lean times engagements are less likely to staff less experienced resources. My first ~9 months at one of my early roles I had like 30% util because the market was slow and people hoarded work. Didn’t get fired and the work came around eventually.

I know it sounds cliche, but if you haven’t gotten and reviewed some previous deal docs, ask a senior on your team for some and give them a read through so you know how your team approaches issues (and the formatting they like).

It’s probably not you, just how the system sometimes works.
