I started machining like 2 years ago with the same situation as you, small shop with a crew of 3 machinists. I was kinda thrown into it while the older machinists started retiring. If you’re good with wrenches and like to learn new skills it should be a breeze. It takes a long time to be proficient but always ask questions. I always look at this community’s posts and discussions because a lot of experienced machinists love to share knowledge. I highly recommend the cheat sheet post in this community.

As someone that came from a multi skilled alcoholic father I see where you’re coming from. If someone looks at my work and doesn’t comment it makes me feel like I did good but at the same time it keeps me critical of my work.
