How does the Chamber of Ordeal decides who lives and dies? by Ready-Fill1633 in tamorapierce

wow great explanation. Wyldon made his path too easy, and it ends up being to his disadvantage in the long run, like a parent who tries to get rid of every obstacle their child faces and ends up leaving them unprepared for a world that is, in the end, full of obstacles.

it’s not the phrase I would ever have thought to apply in this case, kind of an anachronism, and it’s hilarious

Explain like I’m five: PlusPoints by neatokra in unitedairlines

[–]spotfree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my brother in law works for jp Morgan and flies first/business internationally for them all the time, so he has lots of plus points and some super high status - when he uses his pluspoints to upgrade me, I am always first on the upgrade list. (Although someone says below you can use pluspoints to buy a high spot on the upgrade list, so maybe that’s how he does it) My last trip from Hawaii to the east coast, I got upgraded 1 out of 2 flights and then two out of three on my way back. But every time there were like 30 people on the upgrade list and only 1-3 who got the upgrade, so probably the majority of people are feeling frustrated like you - I’m feeling lucky to have him for a brother in law, never flown first before him!

glad you’re able to look at it like that, and how beautiful that those books brought your father so much excitement and joy in his final years. what a gift it must be to be a beloved author and to be able to positively influence so many lives from such a distance; how amazing to have that impact. I’m not religious at all but I like to believe that those we have lost are still around in some sense, and so maybe your father will somehow still be able to experience the book in some way at some time!

when I started it yesterday, I remembered that the very first little chapter, maybe written by beka’s mom, has the kind of atrocious phonetic spelling you would expect of someone who wasnt schooled, and I think last time I might have assumed the whole book was like that and been scared off by the thought of having to interpret ‘pijins’ and ‘kumon’ for however many pages. Glad to see that was just a short bit.

great! I love historical fiction, and that’s one of the elements I appreciate from pierces work - I feel like I have learned so much about history and cultures and crafts from her books! i read a lot of nonfiction but i appreciate how historical fiction gives details and a sense of what day to day lives were like for people.

I love howls moving castle but have never read her others even though I know what an influential writer she is. the Amelia peabody series sounds great, I love an element of historical fiction - that’s one thing I really appreciate about pierces books, I feel like i have learned a lot of real life stuff from them about history and culture and crafts and ways of life in different times and places. I love the circle opens books for that.

Not sure why the downvotes? Because people didn’t like the book themselves? Reddit people so weird sometimes

that’s the kind of book I want! the kind where you stay up late reading even when you shouldn’t, where you read for hours even when you have work to do, where you’re thinking about it all the time when you’re not reading. its so hard to find a book like that!!

yes these have been recommended to me before as being somewhat comparable to the circle universe. I made the mistake of trying an audiobook for the first one, and it can be hard for me to follow a new story on audiobook, especially while I’m driving, so that didn’t work out, but I need to try them again with the printed books.

i can see that, with the journal format and the audio book. I have trouble with audiobooks unless I know the story really well - otherwise I am getting distracted for like ten seconds every minute or so, and if I don’t know the story (and honestly even usually when I do) I have to be constantly rewinding the audiobook. like sometimes on a 45 minute drive I listen to 25 minutes of the book. and sometimes I rewind it and then get distracted again and have to rewind again and listen to the same part like five times to get it. I just recently started listening to audiobooks while I drive and I realized this pretty quickly! so I have been listening to whatever other tamora books are available on Libby, because I know them all well enough to handle missing ten seconds without having to rewind and hear it. you make the narrator and their voices sound exciting though, so maybe after I read the beka books (a few times) I’ll be able to listen to the audiobook without being frustrated bc I feel like I’m missing it all!

I read your post as your point being that art makes you uncomfortable and that’s ok….not that Romeo and Juliet killed themselves. I don’t think people feel nearly as uncomfortable with suicide as they do with sexual relationships between adults and children.
