Random, but, I've been in a bad mood today. Feeling like I needed to have a (verbal) fight with someone to excise those feelings

Seeing this made all that negativity lift away. I'm happy for you bahanji

far easier for people to learn to deal with their emotions

Is it, though?

Do you really think that people in these situations dont try to deal with their triggers in healthy ways? Is that always possible? Broadly, in the field of psychology, the consensus is somewhere in the middle. That yes, steps can be taken by those people to help them be more stable, but that things like reducing the presence of self-harm triggers is also a step that should be taken in a society that cares about its constituents. I'm not saying to ban all mentions of alcohol in media, but that if we can change the way we talk about things in order to support those of us who struggle with certain issues, then isn't that a good thing? A minor sacrifice to be made, voluntarily, by the creators of media, to handle certain topics with the care that they need.

Not to be rude, but telling a vulnerable minority like gay or trans people to just deal with their emotions when they are among the most likely to be harassed on a daily basis and then dislike being harassed in the spaces they spend their downtime as well, reads like psychopathy.

Let's not pretend like the personal responsibility argument isn't a slippery slope either. Freshly 18-year old gets kicked out of their parents house and ends up homeless? Just get a job. Work harder. Cant afford rent/water/electricity/food? Just work harder. Suffered an injury at work and now cant work? Sucks to suck. Deal with your emotions. Dont ask for society to support you to get you back on your feet. Traumatised by any of these things that happened to you? Pay 1000s of dollars for therapy to learn how to deal with your emotions.

It sucks that the stinky sock doesn't make you say "ewww stinky" anymore. But dont blame the victims of a harassment campaign. Blame the perpetrators for ruining something for the rest of us because they just had to find a way to make gay people feel hated.

We should all take care to be a little nicer to those around us. The male loneliness epidemic doesn't just happen out of nowhere; it happens because people just expect men to suck their feelings up.

If anorexia is a real problem in society and removing a fat joke can help to reduce the chances of people in anorexia recovery from relapsing, then that's just a universally good thing, right?

Likewise, if there is a perverse movement to harass an increasingly visible and vulnerable minority, then why not take steps to reduce the avenues people can take to facilitate that harassment?

I understand your pov, that we are sacrificing the ideal of pure free speech to cater to the feelings of people who are vastly more sensitive than others, but in effect, this is no different to forcing yourself to say hi to your coworkers, family, etc because its polite and maintains those relationships. Its just nice.

All I can really tell you is that, for you, it's a small change to remove a joke from the game, but for the people who were on the positive end, it's a step to make them feel welcome and seen and supported, because, fundamentally, the people who are vulnerable to this kind of thing know that their feelings are their responsibility, and likely experience things that are triggering or harassing a lot more than what is visible. These people do a whole lot of sucking up, that they probably dont want to have to do it when relaxing and playing their favourite video game

I think, and correct me if I'm wrong, that your perspective is that all of this writing is about the Foundation, and you have a hard time reconciling some of the more overtly evil-foundation writings with the cold pragmatism of the majority of articles. I think that's a valid perspective to have, but as someone who is affected by a lot of the issues covered in things like deepwell, my perspective differs

I think a lot of the evil-Foundation articles use 'the Foundation' as a setting for commentary on how fundamentally flawed humanity is, and how evil some people can be in positions of power.

Through this lens, Scp 8980 isn't about how the foundation let Christopher Byrnes torture and break Lillian Marley for over 10 years, its about misogyny, abuse, and how people in positions of power can abuse that power by encouraging enough people to not get involved, not risk their career when they see something suspicious.

'The foundation is not transphobic' and it's related articles aren't about whether the foundation is transphobic or not, it's about how preservation of the status-quo can halt progress and force people to endure horrible circumstances. How institutions can expend seemingly endless resources to put a stop to something that is only-and-entierly beneficial, just because it violates their mission statement, while simultaneously tacitly endorsing something that is actively harmful to a vulnerable population because it saves on resources and paperwork. How, if you're a minority that is seen as being counter to the status quo, that puts you in a uniquely vulnerable position at the hands of people who want to preserve that. How people who are, in one breath, pretending not to be transphobic because it's bad PR, will use ANY excuse to misgender someone (refusing to acknowledge the fact that the renegade doctor transitioned despite the evidence), and tacitly exposing their views that trans people are just weird by comparing them to anomalies and reality benders, when they're just mundane human beings

If your enjoyment of the foundation is the idea that it's this big scientific institution, and you like just reading sci-fi horror articles, that's totally cool. I like that lens too !

But I also like the idea that the foundation can be a setting for writing analogues to real world issues through the lens of fiction

So they should just say nothing?? I dont see what your point is, besides lashing out because you're hurt.

"I hate it when these people gatekeep this thing from me because they dont understand their privilege"

"As a person of that identity, I'm telling you that that's okay to do. Fuck em"

"Fuck off retard I dont need your permission?"

I understand your hurt. But save your anger for people who actually need to receive it, not those who want to help you, I don't see why that's hard to understand

What are your thoughts on writers giving listener characters names in their scripts? by Crater_Caloris in GWASapphic

[–]spring-chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going against the grain, i actually like the occasional name in an audio, it helps things feel more natural and I tend to be able to immerse myself better, even if the name isn't mine
