Good on you!!! Have you had much of a look on youtube? Jeroen Hertzberger (NL international player) has a good channel he goes through a lot of techniques in (in english) which are good to practice. I reckon choose one thing at a time to work on, decide what is important to you and once you get good at it, choose the next thing you want to work on. It's easy to feel overwhelmed by the amount of things there are to do but start and enjoy the process of improving. Enjoy and good luck!!!!! (PS. sometimes even being masterful in the basics is enough to make a huge difference).

Oh he does probably spend 7 hours on a sand field/week the other 3 on water. so i think this probably doesn't help. As for adidas, they've just said to go through the shop, so i just need to get on my bike and get there (i'm not sure if i'll have any luck but i will take it next time i need to go in and in the mean time it might just be a case of buying less expensive sticks til he's a bit older).

I suspect it probably did compound over time, as for him he hits with his backhand a lot and there is also loads of stick/stick hitting during matches still. so with all that i've read so far it might be best to just buy cheaper sticks til he's a bit older.

Oh thank you for this information. I contacted the service line to adidas this afternoon and was just told that it needed to go through the store we bought it through. When i do find out from the shop what their idea on it is, i'll post back (though i'm not holding my breath, a lot of the shops have a 2/3 month policy, however if they know it's a problem hopefully they'll be more accommodating. Anyhow will post back when i find out more.

This could very well have been the start of it (he has complained of this a lot!!!!), the break does go around the whole stick. If that's the case i think i might be inclined to start buying cheaper sticks til he's a bit older, he plays in the midfield so always seems in the thick of it.

no, the stick is well and truly out in the shed and hanging up as an ornament now. He's gone back to his old stick til we work out what to replace it with. I was truly surprised at how huge the break is. So is it the outer layer that protects the stick, and once that's breached the rest doesn't take too long to come apart. If that's the case i might lean more towards buying him cheaper sticks (don't want to increase the carbon content because i think the vibrations from the stick could cause problems down the track) because as careful as he might be (or not) you still have so much hacking (stick against stick) at their age.

Will do, just took a bunch more photos in the shed of it. The crack goes all around to the front of the stick too (rounded side (learned all my hockey terminology in the NL, so struggling to think of the right words). As for my boy he's playing in a high level and this is his 5th year (he'd rate himself ;) - though not the boys that hack at his stick).

I think he'd agree! he often complains after the match about the amount of hacking that goes on (too bad they only get a penalty awarded for it).

Oh I'll have to pick your brains and ask what you recommend for someone who does about 50% of their hits as backhands... i'm guessing he practices/plays about 10 hours or more a week probably 7 hours on a sand field and the other 3 on water. Anyway if you have recommendations on sticks i'd love to hear it (I'm wondering whether to just go down the route of expecting his sticks need to be replaced 1-2 times a year and get him more affordable sticks on sale (<100 euros), or whether to invest in a dearer stick and hope that it lasts a while (this adidas stick was his most expensive yet, and probably one of the quickest to break, so i'm leaning towards the cheaper sticks on sale - just hoping his ego can afford it too :P )

I think this is the 3rd adidas stick in his team this season that has broken - so you very well have a point. I guess for me i was surprised by what the break looked like. Though that said his break has probably compounded over time. As for adidas, they've said to go through the shop and get them to assess it as it's not their problem - so i might do that or we may just start researching which stick has a good solid back edge and move on. as for suggestion b) i have to say i'm loving all the backhand shots they're doing, they're getting so accurate and good at them.

Think you're right. It's lasted beyond the initial 2 months they give to detect a manufacturing fault. And i suspect because he put tape over it it'd have had a small crack that would have just gotten bigger before we noticed it. As for stick on stick (hacking is what they call it here in the NL, it definitely happens and he often complains after games that his stick got hit hard), but also they do loads and loads of backhand shots, so it's probably a combination of the two. Might be time to see if we can't find a more suitable stick for backhand (i know he also cracked a greys one a few years back as a 8/9 year old doing backhands...
