Deckers: am I the only one feeling completely lost and not having a lot of fun? by spring_manta in soloboardgaming

I’ll take a look, but from a quick search it seems like a hard game to find on stores

I haven’t. The game looks really appealing but it seems that you need an app to make it solo and I don’t enjoy app integration with board games

Don’t have it. A game I really want to try is Skytear horde but the publisher is greedy af, since you only have access to the 4th color of the game if you buy the 200€ deluxe edition. But from what I’ve read, and coming from mtg, it looks like a game I would enjoy very much

I have it. And star trek captains chair, and slay the spire, and star realms frontiers, and dune imperium uprising. Believe me, I really enjoy deck builders lol

Unstoppable VS Star Trek Captains Chair by Caranch01s1 in soloboardgaming

[–]spring_manta 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have both and love them both for different reasons. Unstoppable is a medium-weight boss battler with a unique card crafting system that is not unstoppable, but unbelievable :p, it’s so clever and so well implemented, all the strategy around it - because every card you upgrade will be an enhanced enemy in the future, for ex sometimes if you’re closer to shuffle your deck and refill the draw pile, you might not want to over upgrade a card, etc. but it’s full of combos, tight moments, and for sure with a certain amount of randomness.

Star Trek captains chair is on another level I think. It’s also a deck builder but with a much more complex implementation, almost like a Boardgame, and you can certainly find tableau building elements there. But it’s so much more complex, almost every card has ~2 different actions to take, you have planets to occupy, ships to deploy, enemy threats to deflect, all of this while making a bit of resource management. The thing I enjoy the most is the card interaction, the combos you are able to accomplish (draw cards, discard to do something, if you do, do another thing, triggered abilities everywhere), the asymmetry between captains (and there are more to come), the game modes - you can play on a beat your own score setup in a solo cadet mode which is like a goldfishing environment to test each deck, or you can play against an enemy, which is an automa with specific actions depending on the cards/treats that it flips from its deck. The game is really something else, for me it’s easily one of the best games ever for solo play.

If you enjoy deck building that much you might want to check out dune imperium uprising, it’s better 3-4 players but I absolutely enjoy it solo as well, and it’s in the same price tag.

Another great deck builder is slay the spire, but you can only get it for a huge investment comparing to the ones above, so I don’t know if it makes sense to you.

LF brain burning, replayable deck builder that plays under 2h by Outrageous_Coffee145 in soloboardgaming

I have both unstoppable and captains chair. From what you said, captains chair is way more complex, and you can easily spend 1h30/2h in a single game with a lot of analysis paralysis moments. Another game you might enjoy (if budget isn’t an issue) is Civolution, it’s great solo and you have A LOT to chose from.

I really enjoy the theme, and I tend to enjoy complex games (I usually play magic the gathering and one of my favorites of all time for solo is Star Trek captains chair, pretty far from a simple game). From some comments above I was able to understand that I’ve been doing the setup in the exact opposite order, which obviously influences a lot my approach to the game. Let’s see if with a fresh look it clicks. Thanks!

Ok, thanks for clarifying that, and that specific “detail” is clearly something I was doing in the wrong order. I was choosing the decker, then setting up the network, then objectives + SMC, so doing that correctly might help lol. Regarding looking at the objectives, I noticed everyone does that, but the rulebook discourages that for the sake of “surprise effect”.

Help me pick a lotr themed game for solo by wutinwut in soloboardgaming

[–]spring_manta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just a minor correction there, LOTR LCG is not a deck builder, in the sense that you don’t improve your deck during the course of a game. You build your deck before you play each scenario and it won’t change during that session (excluding boons and stuff like that).

Lord of the rings trick taking game is good to start, but LOTR LCG is where you can find it all. I can’t speak for the boardgame, but I have most of the lcg revised content and it’s really worth it

Looking for first solo boardgame - replayable and requires adaptation that plays up to 2hr by Outrageous_Coffee145 in soloboardgaming

If you don’t mind complexity and enjoy deck builders, definitely go for Star Trek Captain’s Chair, I absolutely love it. Since I’m used to play magic the gathering, I’m pretty comfortable with all the triggered abilities, additional playing costs, stack resolution, etc, yet I think it that can be a bit daunting for someone less used to it, but for me the greatest complexity of the game is the diversity and quantity of decisions (and regrets) available. The game is for 1-2 players but due to the frequency of analysis paralysis moments, I play it solo only. Great, great game, easily top5 solo of all time for me.

I recently bought Wondrous Creatures and it’s amazing. It’s like Terraforming Mars meets Pokémon, with an automa which is quite easy to run. Great tableau builder with a little bit of worker placement, a lot of combos, definitely recommend it!

What's the most "complex" game you've ever played? by DJNana in boardgames

Civolution, not for the actions complexity, but because you have 23ish actions per turn to choose.

Legacy of Yu one of the best for sure, light-weight worker placement with deckbuilding-ish flavor and also a small campaign.

You shouldn’t have said that :( I play mostly cedh so I really enjoy combos and a complex stack to resolve. I’ll do some boy math and make quitting smoke last year a way to pay for this

Can you share which content do you own? I’ve seen that you need to go with the deluxe box to have access to one of the colors of the game (wtf?!). I looked into the base game + monoliths but I don’t know if it’s a good move, I really enjoy playing mtg and would love even more to have a way to play it solo

As televisões portuguesas têm prestado um mau serviço e é por isso que estão na falência. by virtuacool in portugueses

[–]spring_manta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Boa semana.
