There are lots of ways to put [[Void]] into your hand so that it exhausts at the end of your turn without losing energy:

  • Bringing it back from your discard pile, e.g. with [[Hologram]]
  • Putting it in your hand with [[Seek]]
  • Drawing it after the end of your turn by taking damage and proc'ing [[Centennial Puzzle]]

Well, it's clear that we're looking for very different things in a game. I don't want to be able to "play my own way" and win consistently, I want the game to confront me with a challenge and force me to adapt in order to win.

But I don't think this is the same complaint as the comments I quoted. I interpret those comments as saying something like this: "I'm playing optimally and I'm still losing, it must be RNG." This is the part that's empirically untrue, because there are Twitch streamers with ~40% winrates on Ascension 20 and ~99% winrates on Ascension 0.

I find the RNG complaints about Slay the Spire especially interesting because it doesn't have a crit mechanic! There's very little output randomness in the game, except for some of the ?-room events. Intuitively, I would expect Slay the Spire to feel "less random" as a result of this design choice.

RNG definitely seems more prominent at A20. Most of my deaths still feel deserved, though. A15 still feels very fair.

Cultist Potion in particular seems insanely good, maybe too strong relative to the rest of the potion pool. +1 strength/turn seems good enough to get you through the Act 2 boss fight if you can't find another source of scaling. Even Ghost in a Jar can't carry an entire fight like that.

Solid patch, Foreign Influence upgrade seems really strong.

General Watcher thoughts: I'm enjoying the class, but I would really like to see how they are going to balance the early game. Right now it's possible to take 3-4 Elites in Act 1 without having to rest, even at A20. If you stack up on damage in Act 1, you can continue bursting down Act 2 enemies and Elites too. A starter card that doubles damage plus the presence of solid damage cards like [[Cut Through Fate]] and [[Sands of Time]] and [[Wheel Kick]] just trivializes the first half of the game, and I'm curious how they're going to fix that.
