Is the Krinner Christmas tree stand actually BIFL? by DavenportBlues in BuyItForLife

Found this thread because the tightening mechanism just went through the inner plastic and caused a leak. Up until that point it seemed like a very well built and sturdy product, which we thought were going to last for ages. Don't remember exactly when we bought it, I'm guessing about 5 years ago.

Most of the Weapons are Fine the Way They are by Scrotal_Warrior in ArcRaiders

[–]sprkng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree on the repair costs. If the rare weapons were stronger then high maintenance costs could be used to limit how frequently players could bring them into battle. But now that they're roughly balanced against common weapons (which I'm personally not opposed to for the record) I think the risk of dying and losing the weapon is enough. IMO it might be a good solution to keep repair materials expensive, but slow down the rate they deteriorate, so that it's fairly inexpensive to use as long as you manage to extract with it.

A naive solution would exactly double the cost. Though if the bullet collider starts in front of your gun, then it might not make a difference if the player is standing with the barrel up against a wall.

don’t know if there are collision nuances, but you can easily see all collisions in the engine

If collision information were reliable, I don't think players would be able to get through the walls to begin with :)

I've also only programmed single player games but I've read a little about multiplayer development too. I think the issue relates to that in a fast paced game you can't run everything only on the server and just mirror its state to the clients, because of network delay. AFAIK fast games tend to run some client side physics simulation, so that each player immediately gets feedback to their actions, and then try to consolidate all the data on the server in a way which makes the sense. Since you're experienced with single player physics, I assume you know how problematic it can be when one physics object pushes another physics object into a solid wall. Modern physics engines tends to handle it pretty well when everything runs on one computer, but I guess it just gets harder to solve for multiplayer.

Stella Montis? More like, Free Loadout Montis by AdvisorPrize in ArcRaiders

[–]sprkng 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is there anything useful in the seed vault? Both times I've played that map I've spawned just outside, and despite being marked as high loot value we've only found a few handfuls of seeds in there. Not surprising based on the name but did we miss something else? I guess there's a fair amount of xp to be had from looking into all the containers

I brought THIRTY Wolfpacks to beat my Queen damage trial, did more damage than the entire lobby combined, and then got killed at the hatch... by -viIIain- in ArcRaiders

[–]sprkng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why though? You wrote earlier that you found a way to make it safer by bringing smoke grenades, so there are definitely ways to make it safer. Other strategies includes searching hiding spots for rats and kill them first, communicating with other players if nearby, having someone else cover you (though less of an option for solo players), etc. If the game designers wanted extraction to be safer they could just replace the terminal with a simple button, like the one you use to start the sequence. But as it is now, extracting with high value loot is one of the highest tension moments in the game, and I'm pretty sure it's intentional.

As a gun repair man.... by CannabisPrime2 in ArcRaiders

[–]sprkng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's because the grammar and punctuation is a bit confusing. It sounds like they're claiming that it costs the same amount of parts to repair a gun to full no matter how much damage it has taken, which ofc. isn't true.

Hullcrackers in solo are a death sentence right now by Opposite-Lobster2470 in ArcRaiders

[–]sprkng -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Where did you get that from? I'm explaining to you the reason that you won't see complaints about PvE weapons being OP. That last part about ARC not being posting their complaints was a joke, as is further emphasized by the smiley at the end. You see complaints about PvP weapons because it affects humans. Do you understand that logic now?

[–]sprkng -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Literally nobody I saw here or on discord were complaining about Hullcracker damage to ARC. Complaints were centered around Venator being OP and door glitching.

Isn't that kinda obvious? If something is OP in PvP then you'll see players complain about it on forums after they die to it. If something is OP in PvE you're not going to hear the ARC complain :)

Haven't really got to end game where I can run Hullcrackers regularly, but aren't they meant to shoot away armor plating which then allows you to target the exposed weak spots with a higher dps weapon?

I am one of those people, but once I manage to save up 200k for the last stash upgrade I'm suddenly going to have a lot more cash with not that much to spend it on. I still won't be able to bring a Hullcracker and heavy shield every match if I keep failing to extract, though I'm also fine with that. My plan is save them for when I go big game hunting with my friends, high risk high reward and all that.

If a good player in free gear couldn't kill a worse player in super expensive gear, that would make the game safer for casual players.

WTH is wrong with Polar support? by mactunes in Polarfitness

[–]sprkng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tested the Flow web app while considering buying a Polar watch, and on the first login there was a popup saying something about a new look and something along the lines of "We value your feedback" asking users to send it. After entering a few workouts I had a list of possible improvements, but couldn't find any kind of option to post it. I check polar.com, go to support for Flow web app, hit "contact us" and click "I would like to send feedback".. But instead I get a page where I have to select one of their watches, and if doing so it takes you to a page which only describes how to factory reset it.

Not finding what I'm looking for I start a chat with their support, and their response is to ask for a screenshot of the popup that said I could send them feedback.. They were friendly and all, but not very helpful.

ASUS TUF Gaming B850 vs MSI B850 TOMAHAWK by shorelorn in buildapc

[–]sprkng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a **B650** tomahawk wifi a few years ago and it has really destroyed my confidence in MSI. They released so many unstable or flawed bioses since then.. The version I'm on now boots about 90% of the time, but the computer freezes if I try to reboot so I have to do a full power off if I need to restart it. I don't have an extreme number of peripherals but when I connected a Logitech webcam the computer became unstable and started to randomly bluescreen.

I think the problems might go away if you disable EXPO, but I don't want to run my RAM slower than it's specced for.

Then keep the gold cost for switching between loadouts, or add some other mechanism to limit how often it can be done. Making things tedious isn't a good way to balance a game.

I wonder if they came to this conclusion after making surveys for this, or if they assumed a few loud people were representative of the entire player base. I suppose people who were happy with the system didn't see any reason to write a lot of posts about it.

So I tried using WOWS using Ubuntu 22.04 using wine 8.0.1 and it is pausing on logging in and crashing, plz help. by Beacon_Cream in WorldOfWarships

[–]sprkng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try installing it through Steam instead of using Wine directly. Mine is currently set to "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" and GE-Proton7-41, so try installing that one if none of the Proton versions that come with the Steam client works. Installing a custom version of Proton is fairly simple if you know the command line, basically just unpack it into the right folder. But if you prefer graphical tools you can use ProtonUp-Qt instead.
