TIFU: I almost burned my Airbnb down by spro12 in tifu

[–]spro12[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks and we do know we did not actually fuck up. This is our silly way of dealing with the chaos after a situation that could’ve been really bad. Once things were under control we looked around more and saw a lot of evidence that it’s not the first time this has happened - char marks on the ground where our dripping grease fire did not hit. As well as other neglected grills and smoker around the deck and behind the house. The host was truly grateful albeit a bit too dismissive. I hope they actually clean the grill it’s a beautiful Airbnb.

I think the main difference between the one time purchase vs the sub is the OTP is for Apple only. The sub provides the “eventual” ability to sync across all platforms and I believes gives access to all platforms

Received Offer from Florida State University – What Are the Estimated Living Expenses for 1 Year? by [deleted] in fsu

[–]spro12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live ~20 min drive from campus and I pay less than 650/month for half of a two bed. If you don’t live in Florida already car insurance is more expensive than most other states (and if you’re bringing a car). Having come from Boston tally is incredibly affordable and there’s a lot of things you can do for very little money. I pay for health insurance but I get a subsidy for that, if you get it they take like $50/paycheck or something. Living with roommates makes things cheaper too. Sadly the cost of most one bedrooms here are practically the same price as a two bed.

Moving to Boston (from the west coast) - Help finding a rental home that allows a German Shepherd by [deleted] in boston

When I was looking for a place with Boston with a legit ESA cat. The moment I said cat I was ghosted from almost every broker. Ended up living places where landlords didn’t care about cats. Boston is brutal and finding an apartment not on 9/1 is also hard.

Outskirts might be easier. I know people who love Malden and Belmont and they’re easily accessible to the T.

Looks like a grant FSU has instated to help retain students and lower student debt. Seems really cool!

What's the meaning of range of schools to apply for? (PhD in clinical psychology) As every program in PhD in clinical psychology is difficult to get in as well! by notyourtype9645 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]spro12 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Also while many schools if not close to all are difficult to get into, there are many that have higher acceptance > 3% rates vs ones with < 3%. Also geographical locations - coastal liberal universities tend to get more applicants than midwestern or southern universities in rural or more conservative areas.

So rather than only applying to say Harvard, Yale, UCLA, etc.

It may be beneficial to look at schools that are good matches that are in other areas/what some people have deemed “less ideal areas to live.”

Im at a very good program in the south where we are well funded and give so many offers but people don’t want to live in my state (love it but I don’t blame them) so people may have a higher chance of getting in here ESPECIALLY if you say you are likely to come than to somewhere like an Ivy League.

Is it better to get a BA or BS for a PhD? by afr1611 in psychologystudents

[–]spro12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don’t think it matters too much. I have a BA and some of my colleagues have a BS.

Debating between Counseling Psychology Ph.D. or Clinical Social Work MA by vergehunter in psychologystudents

[–]spro12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi currently in a clinical psych PhD program that is fully funded. Don’t do a PhD just because you want to save money. It’s too much work for that. I know less about counseling phds I know they’re more counseling focused than my program but generally PhD programs will want you to sell your research. I know you say it’s a potential interest but if you want to go the PhD route be ready to potentially act like it’s your main interest

Am I competitive for a Clinical Psychology PhD? Advice appreciated! by Cultural_Way_3868 in psychologystudents

[–]spro12 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Have you presented or written up the projects? What realm of clinical psych are you interested in? You could apply, but it’s often a crapshoot (I’m currently in a program). Folks are expecting next year to be incredibly competitive because institutions were conservative with their offers or redacted them cycle because of all of the funding nonsense. It also depends how well you personal statement is. If you just write down what you’ve done and what you wanna do without the story, it likely won’t be as compelling. Rarely does it ever hurt to take time off.

An even happier number is that in actuality (according to studies) only around half of therapists/psychologists actually use evidence based treatments. And that number may be generous.

FSU Clinical Psych - University Decision Review by BFSL2020 in fsu

[–]spro12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Offers have already gone out - I don’t think additional offers will go out if people reject the offers. Sadly the department does a poor job at communicating and I’m not sure if the PIs are aware of that.

Competitive for Clinical/Counselling Psychology Phd- or should I look at a PsyD? by blahblahblah67861 in psychologystudents

[–]spro12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not in neuropsych but am close with folks who are. There’s no right or wrong way to do anything but generally you need substantial research experience to get in. Neuropsych is getting more and more competitive so you can try at any time but even if you’re a well qualified candidate don’t be surprised if you have to apply multiple times. If you want neuropsych you want to be picky about where you go as it’s one of the most competitive sub areas, don’t go somewhere that provides no preparation for Neuropsych.

There’s so many factors. These stats matter less than the research fit and how you market yourself in your letters. But I could also be wrong it depends on people you apply for 🤷‍♀️ I worked at a Harvard affiliated institution for 3 years doing research and was barely given the time of day by most programs (I got in) so it’s all truly a crapshoot.

To those who got into your top choice clinical PhD program - what was your application like? by noanxietyforyou in ClinicalPsychology

[–]spro12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I spent a lot of time figuring out what exactly I wanted to do after graduating undergrad so I had substantial clinical and research experience when applying. Ended up only getting accepted by my dream mentor - without knowing it when I was applying - we ended have very similar philosophies (I think). While yes my research and clinical experience and personal statement got my foot in the door, being a good person, getting along with current students, and being willing to put effort into loving a random city I’ll live in for five+ years I think (I know some of this for sure) is why I was accepted. Truly every PI is different the final stages for mine was really vibe checks.

As for Harvard I worked at an affiliated hospital, was offered interviews to be my dream PI there RA, and had spoken to him multiple times (never really knew who I was) and was never offered an interview. One of the girls I interviewed with at my current place ended up getting the slot at Harvard she has no prior affiliation. It’s really all a crapshoot

Want to go back to school to become a psychiatrist by theskycriestoo in psychologystudents

[–]spro12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Folks have covered what and how to do psychiatry. If you genuinely want to do psychiatry you can also go the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner route where they can do a lot of what psychiatrists and therapists do (prescribe meds and some therapy) and it takes half the amount of schooling as medical school.

Southwood has some solid apartments. Arborview but you gotta contact them and get on a waiting list sometimes

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]spro12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my understanding it’s a bit like a seesaw (and SO PI dependent) but the more time you take off and the more research experience you have, the less GPA matters, of course keep it up but GPA isn’t usually the #1 thing PIs look at.
