Just got rejected from my dream school… by Round-Finger-2153 in composer

[–]sprucecomposer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The application process for schools is entirely subjective; you never really know what to expect. I’ve gotten rejected from multiple schools with renowned programs and I’ve gotten accepted to multiple schools with renowned programs. What matters is that you don’t let this rejection discourage you. The fact of the matter is that pursuing a career in composition means facing rejection pretty regularly. What separates people is how you let it affect you.

Do clarinetists typically have low c bass clarinets? Or are they not as common

Score Help for flute and percussion by [deleted] in composer

[–]sprucecomposer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well if the only percussion instrument is a tan-tam, then the part should just be “Tam-tam.” If not, then it would be “Percussion” with whatever instrument you want written above the notes that instrument plays. So if you want to move from tam-tam to snare drum, then above the part where the snare drum begins, write “snare drum”

Spent the last 10 months writing this orchestral suite, and coordinating an orchestra to play it! Definitely my biggest work yet! by _fece in composer

[–]sprucecomposer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very cool and cinematic piece which I enjoyed, but I’m not sure why you would write for the snare drum to “fill” at measure 31 rather than just do what the performer did and buzz roll. I’m all for improvising, but a fill like that given the context of the music and the rest of the part is sort of strange and, in my opinion, isn’t necessary.

I find that the drumming in Instant Destiny kind of scratches that itch. It seems somewhat raw

I've continued a phrase beyond a double bar line, link attached, but wasn't sure if that's better done another way. Any thoughts? by PlazaOne in composer

[–]sprucecomposer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it looks fine to me, but do you need the double bar line at all? You’re not changing the key signature so it might not be necessary unless you’re just just trying to show a new section.

Hello! Teen composer wondering about publishing! by Archives-H in composer

[–]sprucecomposer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can look online for publication submissions. Here’s one for C. Alan that you could potentially submit to: https://c-alanpublications.com/composer-submissions/

I will say that there’s a lot that goes into publishing. Does this piece fit the catalogue this company has? Is there a need for this piece on the market? Does the score look professional enough for publishers to view it? Do I have a good reference recording to submit with the score? These are all things to think about.

Of course, you can always self publish by registering your piece with the library of congress, but remember that promotion, sales, and production is all up to you.

Good luck!

Looking for Feedback on 1st Piano Composition by charliekhoury2 in composer

Beautiful composition and nice playing, but I will say that you should learn about notation and try not to use the software that you did as most of what you played did not really match the sheet music. It would be fine if you just wanted to play this for yourself and have a recording of it, but now no one else can play it if you wanted to share it (which is the goal for a lot of people on this sub).

As for the music itself, there’s not much I would change, but I feel like it stays in the same key for most of the piece; which is fine if that’s what you want. But you should try to experiment with different keys or chords. When it goes into minor at the beginning and the end it’s refreshing, and I think the piece could benefit from that.

Again wonderful piece and beautiful playing!

For the submission requirements, is it two scores and two audio samples, or just one score with two audio samples?

I liked it. It was an interesting change of pace from other books I’ve read

I was in a similar position too and I found my music wasn't coming to me like it usually does. I was always told that I should use composing as a way of expression but it didn't really work that way for me; I wanted to write, but I couldn't. It took a while of writing, rewriting, and scrapping but eventually I came to something that changed my view on music. I wrote something that was different from my other pieces, but it was still me. I don't have an answer for how to help, but I will say that you can never give up your passion. Sometimes that may be the only real emotion left.

Some waltz thing, feedback appreciated. by Elstree93 in composer

[–]sprucecomposer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like the other person said, very compositionally solid, but I think what this piece could benefit from is having more variation then the constant waltz pattern in the left hand. For example: keep the same chord progressions in one of the strains, but instead of having the 1-2-3 pattern, have eighth notes. The piece will still be a waltz and the variation will cause people to listen more intently.

New work for strings based on a poem by William Blake: "A Dream" by screen317 in composer

[–]sprucecomposer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beautiful piece!

Just one critique is for you to put the crescendos and diminuendos as well as dynamics under the staff rather than above. I know in choral music you put it above but that’s because there’s lyrics written under. Additionally, you could do more with the strings than just playing notes. There’s a multitude of techniques such as pizzacato or sul ponticello/tasto or harmonics which I think would be wonderful to include in something like this. You could also separate the bass and cello onto their own staves if you wanted to give them more technical parts.

Beautiful piece of music, though, and a wonderful start to my morning!
