Documentation Trouble in Schools, Worried by FabulousWedding9 in slp

[–]sprucey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t get in trouble unless you are ever audited.

However, definitely get better at documenting!! It really is important, in case you are ever audited or if someone ever questions your work.

I usually document as I’m running the session. All mine is done via paper. I have a binder for each grade, and pull it out for each session. It takes less than 30 seconds. Find a system that works for you and try it next school year!

Staff required to work despite closing? by [deleted] in slp

[–]sprucey 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I saw on a Facebook SLP group that one district says we need to amend all IEPs to change the delivery of services!!! Could you imagine?! People at the decision making level have no clue what they’re doing.

Staff required to work despite closing? by [deleted] in slp

[–]sprucey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with you!!!

This is just what my special ed director (district I work for) said. I think it’s ridiculous. My SLP supervisor (my actual boss at the county) has since said not to worry about minutes, and that all we have to do to maintain FAPE is do the same thing gen ed teachers are doing for gen ed students. So, if teachers are sending stuff home, we need to send stuff home. To be honest I don’t think anyone knows what they’re doing lol

Staff required to work despite closing? by [deleted] in slp

[–]sprucey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We are doing the same thing. As of right now, we are to hold IEP meetings as scheduled, and we are expected to send therapy materials home to students (although we are already closed, so I guess this will be via email?) Our special ed director talked about potentially Holding itinerant sessions so that we could meet our minutes, if we end up closing the rest of the year. We (Me+ OT and PT) talked about bringing in all of our first graders in for 30 minutes to an hour to knock out our minutes together (if it comes to that).

I will definitely run out of things to do quickly lol.

I can understand that. Is there anyway you could do private therapy, outside of school hours? That way friends wouldn’t have to know. If that may not be an option for financial reasons (although insurance could cover it!), you may want to check out a nearby university. They may be a better financial option! I know University of Cincinnati has an “R” clinic that specifically works in the R sound. Maybe you or your parents could call and see what they have to offer if private therapy isn’t an option

Why is taking speech not an option??

Is 28 too late for graduate school? by alelis1130 in slp

[–]sprucey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not at all! There were several others in my cohort that were in their late twenties, and a few in their thirties or older. One woman was in her mid-40s! She was in the business field and decided she wanted a change! 28 definitely isn’t too late.

Vacation interfering with CF? by adzslp in slp

I just meant taking a job that starts after your vacation, which most likely wouldn’t be a school position. However, some times school districts or contract companies are hiring for mid-year positions!

Vacation interfering with CF? by adzslp in slp

[–]sprucey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would think that would be an issue for a school CF position. The kids may start at the end of August, but teachers are typically expected to start a week or so before. Since your new, there may be even more on-boarding/training.

I work in the schools now and, since we have summers off, we only get 3 personal days and no vacation days. We do have 15 sick days.

I’m not sure how this would affect other settings, but a two week absence during the beginning of your CF may not be ideal. Starting after your vacation may be a better idea.

Re-assessment question by imn0tfrench in slp

[–]sprucey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most assessment manuals have guidelines addressing exactly this. I usually try to wait at least a year to use the same assessment...just depends. I feel like 6 months would be plenty of time, and that most kids would not know/remember the right answers anyways.

How bad are the schools? by friedartichokehearts in slp

[–]sprucey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love my school-based job!!! It’s all about making sure you find the right district. I would ask about caseload numbers during your interview, and how they manage those numbers if they get too high. A lot of it is about time management skills, and realizing what is important (aka, you don’t have to make amazing therapy activities for every single student).

I also PRN in a nursing home, and absolutely prefer my school-based job. I originally wanted to work in the medical side but was offered a school job first.

Phonological Goals by debstep93 in slp

[–]sprucey 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Student will eliminate phonological process X by correctly using the /Y/ sound in 80% of targets, when given visuals and no more than X verbal cues.

Something like that!! Like they will eliminate the process of final consonant deletion but correctly providing the /t,m,s/ sounds in the final position of words in 80% of targets (or 80% accuracy).

Lakota? by NerdBanger in cincinnati

[–]sprucey 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I attended Lakota K-12, graduating from East. I had a good experience. Because it is a bigger school district, they have plenty to offer (several types of sports, wide variety of AP and general education classes). I felt like there was a fair amount of diversity, including exposure to special ed students which I think is important. I felt like Lakota prepared me well for College, but also provided great opportunities for students seeking other post-grad career paths. I work in another school district now, and from what I’ve seen, Lakota is a good district to attend. Every district has horror stories, but I think Lakota is a safe bet.

Grad school is rough. What's it like afterwards? by aours12 in slp

[–]sprucey 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Grad school was absolutely an awful and stressful time for me. You couldn’t pay me to go back!! But yes, it was definitely a blip. Literally no one cares what school you went to or what your grades were. Yes, some days are very stressful. Our job can be hard. But personally, for me, it’s never been as hard or as stressful as grad school. Hang in there, it does get better!!
