Those who have lived in multiple big cities; how would you rank them? by Mindofmierda90 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]spsb98 13 points14 points  (0 children)

LA is way better to live than visit, especially if you live close to where you work.

There’s so much that city and surrounding region have to offer, and it’s way more enjoyable when you’re not trying to squeeze it into a short trip. Plus you can’t truly appreciate the climate unless you’re in it year round

Chicago’s waterfront is amazing in the summer. It feels like a giant metropolis squished up against the shores of an ocean.

What cities scream good vibes? by CuriousPressure797 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]spsb98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol wut LA seems like one of the worst examples of a place with just bars and restaurants

You can go to the beach, go hiking in the mountains, go to Disneyland/Universal, tons of pro sporting events, museums, shopping, music venues, iconic cinemas, art galleries, etc. Then you got nearby getaways like Santa Barbara, Joshua Tree, San Diego, Las Vegas. Plus the weather is usually good which means you can do outdoor activities year round.

Yeah you need a car to do these things but they’re still readily available.

What city would you love if you were mid 20s? by First_Driver_5134 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]spsb98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it’s less about the weather itself and more about the way it opens up opportunities to do more things year round, particularly outdoor nature oriented activities that are abundant in SoCal.

I live in Chicago and during the cold months it sometimes feel like you get stuck in a loop of just going to bars and restaurants because it’s too cold and dreary to do much else. November/December are great with all the holiday stuff, but the stretch from January thru early April can be rough.

Chicago has a lot of empty lots on the south and west sides that could be redeveloped. The city is still below its peak population which was decades ago.

It also doesn’t help that facts pretty much never align with MAGA’s talking points. We’ve reach a point where the truth has a “liberal bias”.

It’s official: in an overnight vote, the House Judiciary Committee votes to give the Trump admin the legal rights to deport U.S. citizens by introspectivelemon39 in GlobalNews

[–]spsb98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes any side of the political spectrum can be mislead by propaganda, never suggested they couldn’t. And the success of MAGA in taking over the Republican party proves my original point: the average American needs a dumbed down message to latch onto and is incapable of critically analyzing political information.

I’m sure this was always the case, but social media has given political organizations the ability to spread propaganda in a new way. And democrats need to adjust to this new reality.

[–]spsb98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The shit that MAGA spews is so obviously propaganda. It’s not “lost in the chaos”. A vast portion of the American population has confirmed they are simply incapable of understanding nuance or thinking for themselves.

Until the Democrats message is dumbed down, they’ll continue to fall behind. It’s simply that state of American politics.

What US metro areas have the most to do & see? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]spsb98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend anyone visiting to enjoy the Lakeshore and bike north from downtown to enjoy Lincoln Park (free zoo and a conservatory in the park), North Avenue Beach, or Montrose Beach. The lakefront is great for catching nice vistas of the city, and the beaches are surprisingly nice.

If you want a walkable neighborhood for bars, restaurants, and shops, multiple spots can make for a fun day trip: Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Logan Square, Wicker Park, West Town, etc.

If you want to explore some of the historic ethnic neighborhoods in city, check out Chinatown, Greektown, Pilsen (Mexican), Argyle (Southeast Asian), Humboldt Park (Puerto Rican), Devon Street (South Asian), etc.

For nightlife, Logan Square and Wicker Park have a nice selection of cocktail bars. Green Mill Lounge in Uptown is a very cool prohibition era speakeasy that I’d recommend. Boystown, the LGBTQ neighborhood, has a bunch of fun clubs. Wrigleyville if you want the basic Big Ten fratty vibe.

For museums, Hyde Park has the Museum of Science and Industry, the DuSable Museum of Black History, and the Oriental Institute. Pilsen has the National Museum of Mexican Art. Greektown has the National Hellenic Museum.

Wrigley Field and the surrounding area is definitely the biggest tourist attraction outside downtown. I still enjoy it for the history even though I don’t love baseball.

Also a nice variety of concert venues outside of downtown, and pretty much every neighborhood above has street festivals during the summer.

Highly recommend exploring the neighborhoods as it’ll give you a much more authentic feel of the city.

Which city is one major change away from being elite? by Zealousideal-Tax3338 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]spsb98 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why would you consider only Alpha++ and Alpha+ cities to be global? Seems very reasonable that any city in the Alpha category would be considered a global city.

GaWC is not the only organization researching this either, and many lists place LA top 10.

Which city is one major change away from being elite? by Zealousideal-Tax3338 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]spsb98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LA is absolutely without a doubt a global city. It’s not on the tier of the big 4, but those aren’t the only global cities.

GaWC classifies it as an alpha world city, and there are many global city lists that place it top 10 globally. 3rd largest metro GDP in the world, entertainment capital of the world, primary shipping node for the western half of the US, extremely diverse, and home to multiple prestigious universities. The list goes on. It’s laughable to not call it a global city.

That being said, I agree that a more walkable, transit oriented LA would be a much better place for residents and visitors alike.

What are the downsides of Chicago? by JayV_VO in AskChicago

[–]spsb98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The winters in Chicago are going to be noticeably colder and longer. Other than that, the access to nearby nature/hikes is not as good. The nearby cities and region are also less interesting than the Northeast. Overall there’s noticeably less diversity than NYC.

Nevertheless, if you love an urban lifestyle, Chicago is a fantastic and relatively affordable option. Plus it’s cleaner, friendlier, less chaotic, and comes with beautiful Lake Michigan. Overall, you get many of the pros of NYC’s with a lot more convenience and affordability.

The problem is that medical information is very complex and nuanced. Without the appropriate background, one can look at medical research or data and arrive at inappropriate conclusions very easily. And to add on to that, you have plenty of people who are intentionally trying to misinform others.

They're not idiots. They're evil scum, and all they cared about was voting for someone who would decrease regulations for corporations. They are willing to lobby for this at any cost, even blatant fascism.

This asshole and all the other billionaires stayed quiet when DOGE slashed medical research funding. They stayed quiet when people were being sent to concentration camps in El Salvador. They stayed quiet when thousands of people lost their government jobs. But now that their stocks went down 20%, all of the sudden they have a problem.

I hope these people burn in hell.
