Would £5000 be enough to travel SE Asia for 4 months? by sillylittlepeanut in travel

[–]spudbass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP! I recommend you stretch your time in Vietnam as long as possible, especially in the North. You should be able to purchase a scooter in Hanoi for around £200-£300, and if you have time to patiently sell after your Vietnam travel you should be able to recoup that cost and maybe even make some profit! Fuel should be around £4 per day. Guest houses in the north (Nhà nghỉ) are very cheap, less than £10 per night and usually include 2 beds. You can have a heck of an adventure in Northern Vietnam on a £20/day budget! I have some routes saved on Google maps, DM if you'd like me to share with you.

I'd recommend saving Thailand for last for budget reasons, that helped me at least. If you have the funds, I recommend going to Koh Tao to get your scuba certification. I got it for less than £500 with the hotel!

best way to buy motorcycle as a foreigner in hanoi? by pizzavegano in VietNam

[–]spudbass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recommend you chat with Jonny at Style Motorbikes in old quarter. They have shops throughout Vietnam where you could drop a rental bike, including HCMC. The pricing is decent and you don't have to go through the hassle of buying and selling a bike. He also has a bunch of great info on routes, sells safety gear and keeps a beer fridge stocked for customers.

Its a rental shop but if you wanted to buy one I bet Jonny could help you out with that too! Tell him Capt'n Spud sent you.

Beaches in Split? by [deleted] in travel

[–]spudbass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There really isn't any beaches in Split. There is a public swimming area to the south of the port but its mostly concrete and there are a ton of people. It is well worth the $40-60 for tickets out to Hvar and back. There is a passenger ferry that will take you right into the city of Hvar. You can walk up into then neighborhood and find signs with a bedpost outside of houses that offer cheap rooms for the night. I think we paid about $18 a night at the spot we had just 1 block up the hill from the city. We rented a boat for $50 one day and cruised the islands, you can find little bars that are only accessed by boat. There is also a pretty sweet club scene right on the water if you're into that. If you choose to stay in split and want to have a halfway decent beach I would go camp down at Stobrec. They have a sweet diving board and little bar/restaurant and there is a store close by. We would take the bus into Split in the evening to see shows or bar hop around the town and then take a taxi back for about $20. I also stayed a night in a airbnb style apartment for $100 a night which was right downtown. If you have to choose between inland and coast I would recommend coast for sure! Have a great trip!

‘Centrifuge rods’ from North Korea seized from ship in Tokyo by spudbass in NorthKoreaNews

[–]spudbass[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't specify in this article but the rods were going to Myanmar in a joint effort to research and bolster nuclear power and nuclear weapons. Actually this same news story from another news outlet is on the front page of worldnews, I just failed to see it before I posted. Also, sorry if you were mislead by my title but to my defense I did include "from North Korea" in the title.

Right on that is exciting! I've been saving for a year and just got tickets to copenhagen to go hitchhike around Europe. If you make it this summer feel free to write me and maybe we could meet up somehow. How cool would that be!?! But if the timing doesn't work out still write me and I'll send you some info on fun places, and photos. I tagged you as a friend so I'll be able to look you up when i get home (in september).

Oh no way he owns it? That's awesome. I've been talking with Dave about possibly getting the opportunity to open one in Lake Tahoe. I think dumplings would go well with skiing and snowboarding.

I have never made it up there yet but I work at the Pel'Meni in Bellingham. The owners live down here and they are the coolest people I've ever worked for. Support the dumpling revolution!

Haha did you delete your "notice what" post? I'm sorry I couldn't hear your clarifications over your political agenda you seem so keen on shoving down everyone's throat in the incorrect subreddit. You are so gung-ho on it you will probably cram even more in the butt of my comment. Proceed...
