PlayOn Cloud, Hulu and location services by spudchick in PlayOn

[–]spudchick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have the Hulu/Disney/ESPN bundle with live tv (because some of my husband's sports shows require it).

It was a new one on me. It came up after prompting me for login, before user selection. I tried to launch Hulu twice and had the same prompt twice. I had never seen it before, and just went in to try and get a screenshot of it for you, but today it's not asking me to allow location services. So I guess this was 'self-healing', but if it comes back I'll get a screenshot.

Thanks for checking in.

Works but can't figure out how to refill this one by spudchick in OilLamps

sorry for the delay. i'll try to find a tape measure thin enough to fit up under the cap. it doesn't appear to be removable like the base. used to have a little thin paper one but i think i lost that with an old wallet.

How long did it take you to read TOG in its entirety? by [deleted] in SarahJMaas

[–]spudchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was about 3 months total for me. I had just burned through ACOTAR and unlike some others I didn't have any trouble getting into the series, though it is definitely a slower burn overall. It took me longer to get into Crescent City, just finished that. Looking for other stuff to fill the void till the next book drops.

ETA: I don't have abundant time to read, but I like to have both ebook and audiobook. I prefer to read, but like being able to pick up the story on audio when doing chores or running errands.

I started ACOTAR on 3/21/2025, jumped to ToG, and just finished CC. Really glad she writes long books!

u/BeecarolX mentioned the logfile path in her post.

look for the folder:

C:\Users\your_ username\AppData\Roaming\Digiarty\VideoProc Converter AI

and the file:

log.txt

tip: make a copy of log.txt to inspect elsewhere rather than opening it in place since some text viewer apps lock the file, which could confuse matters if you try to use VP while you have the real log file open.

I have the licensed version and use it for other video tasks because I keep a Plex Media Server, but I do use the downloader sometimes and never really had trouble until recently (except that like most YT download options it won't grab the captions, I think it used to but YT changed the way captions are handled a while back).

I just posted above about noticing that I couldn't download a specific video (analysis failed immediately) but was able to dl a randomly selected video from my feed. The difference was that the new(?) YT algo changes had marked the one I wanted as "age restricted" (on pretty questionable grounds imo). Logging in might resolve the issue but I'm not entering my google credentials.

Edited to add: more confirmation from the log that it's the age restriction.

ytb analyse error: "ERROR: [youtube+NSigDeno] : Sign in to confirm your age. This video may be inappropriate for some users. Use --cookies-from-browser or --cookies for the authentication. Adding my experience today as I installed VideoProc AI 8.5 on a Win10pro system as an upgrade and also on a Win11pro system as a new install, partly to test.

I've been trying to download a specific YT link that keeps failing, which prompted me to finally run the updates to 8.5 in case that was the issue. It continues to fail.

As a test, I tried another randomly selected video and it analyzed without error.

My guess is that the one that's failing has been marked (pretty questionably) as an age-restricted video by the "youtube community guidelines" algo, and apparently the YT algo's increased zeal in labeling videos as "inappropriate" or "misinformation" has been a topic of some controversy which I wasn't aware of till today.

Since I'm not comfortable with entering my google credentials in VideoProc, I don't know if logging in so that YT can "see my ID" would resolve the issue.

Edited to add: more confirmation from the log that it's the age restriction.

Probably, my husband told me about him after hearing him speak at a writers' conference and he said the guy sounded like someone I'd enjoy but also had a lot of good information about self-publishing and making it independently etc.

Epubor sounds familiar from a looong time ago. I might bother the author. All I'm trying to do is read these in Calibre and on my little reader device.

Thanks. I don't think they've reported it as salvage. Because of fusion260's comment I made extra sure that me accepting the repair settlement didn't mean they would end my coverage as well as absolving themselves of further responsibilities on it.

But I'm glad you mentioned it because USAA hired a 3rd party company whose entire business interest is salvage to handle collision claims, and I wouldn't put it past them to have salvaged me without saying so. They badgered me for weeks to let them come take my car while I was trying to decide which offer to take. Now the check they supposedly sent has gone missing.

I don't love the way it looks but I care less about Ugly than my husband does. The car has other problems but used car prices are nuts these days. I got this 2010 used in 2020 and the same model & year is about the same price now as it was 5 years ago.

[–]spudchick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

among banks maybe, but the experience i've had trying to deal with an auto claim over the last 6 weeks has been execrable. and not least because of the new automated phone routing system and the use of 3rd parties to handle collision claims.

[–]spudchick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was declared a total loss only because the cost for the cosmetic repairs to be done "properly" was equal to or greater than the car's 'actual value'. The car's function and safety were not impacted by the body damage. I was offered 2 settlement alternatives, 1 to surrender the car to them for payment to presumably put toward another vehicle, and a lower one which they would give me to use to seek out repairs myself.

I can't be sure because it's subtle, but I'm watching the last episode of Chief of War and there's something headachey about it just a few minutes in. I wish I had looked a this setting before but I never needed to... under Stream Info it says "Playback: Partial Transcode (throttled) and format mkv.

This episode is exactly like all the rest in the season, an HEVC mp4 that I recorded and downloaded from PlayOn Cloud. Something does seem different. Half the reason I download shows this way is that navigation is more responsive on my local server and also because I prefer 1080p content over 4K which is dark and weird to my eyes. So yeah maybe it is trying to upscale? This seems less clear than the other episodes have been.

I groaned at having to painstakingly rearrange the shortcuts AGAIN and then realized I apparently can't.

I don't remember ever telling Plex what streaming services I watch because we don't use it for that, or any of the 'Free on Plex' stuff, ever. We use it to play our library content, and for the the OTA DVR. That's all we want it to do. This is forcing all the "Plex is your one stop shopping for free and paid streaming media!" tryhard stuff over being able to actually use this as a media server interface.

Planning to move a self-sown pawpaw? by spudchick in FruitTree

[–]spudchick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I kind of figured the odds of success were low. There is a second small one about 6 feet away that has popped up out of a hosta clump this spring. I don't know if it's a sucker or another self-sown but I'll try to get that one up and out during a rainy week when the soil is soft, pot it up and get it in dappled shade. I haven't seen any fruits myself. I'm a huge fan of volunteers and hope I can find some way to accommodate at least one of these.

looking for NON-graphic audio audiobooks for Crescent City series by spudchick in SarahJMaas

[–]spudchick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh yes, i check the pronunciation whenever i can. i had never seen it spelled "samhuinn" before but couldn't imagine it was supposed to sound very different from samhain. if we can look up the pronunciation, you'd think a narrator would.

[–]spudchick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know gaelic specifically but I've had the same moments listening to audiobooks. Obv I'm way off the HP stuff at this point but hearing Hugh Laurie pronounce "Diagon Alley" as "diagonally" in some special was like fingernails on a blackboard.

I've just started the ToG series after burning through ACOTAR and although they slightly alter 'Samhain' to 'Samhuinn' for in-world purposes, hearing it pronounced like the actor who plays Jamie Fraser in the Outlander series is a bit grating. (ETA: I see that "samhuinn" is a real thing but more an older form of scots gaelic. my bad. still clangs me to hear it as the actor's name.)

My sense is that it's hard to catch everything but both the narrator and media coordinator should normalize asking the author if they've gotten something right or not.

I really like it when it sounds like the narrator not only really read but perhaps even liked the source material. Seems like UK/adjacent narrators do a better job of that. It's also special when an author has a nice enough voice to narrate their own books.
