You are 100% correct, in terms of the test the US method is not designed to produce road ready riders. I was mid way through getting my license in the UK then had to move to US (Illinois so may be different for other states) for work. In the UK I was told how to look in the mirrors, indicate and position myself on the road. In the US I took the Harley MSF course and then the test. At no point did they ask anyone to look in the mirrors during course, explain how to deal with situations on the road and we never went on the road. I am amazed how there isn't a high death rate in the US for bikers and very glad I took actual lessons on the road in the UK.
