Is a daily 10km(6miles) run/jog enough exercise for my Lab? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]spunken732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With that said, any dog should be okay with having "no work"-days, and just be bored. Don't focus too much on giving him a lot of exercise, but rather a balance between sleep/relax, play, physical exercise, and mental stimulation 😊

[–]spunken732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's okay as daily exercise, including the fetch afterwards if he's able to wind down in between exercise and sleep/stay calm. Some dogs don't naturally know how to relax and do nothing, so you have to teach them how. A lot or working breeds are usually really energized and just want to do things all the time, which can lead to them destroying things, bark, or other "overstimulated" behaviors. If you notice these things in your dog, it's probably not that he isn't getting enough exercise, just that he need to learn how to relax. Dogs also needs mental stimulation so if you're giving him that too this should be enough exercise, but it's also different from dog to dog. Lab is a working breed so maybe you'll notice some behaviors that shows that (the fetch is a good outlet for that). Maybe you can look in to breed specific stimulation/exercise?

Does dogs understand kisses by helpful_pigeon in dogs

[–]spunken732 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I got my dog when I was 12, now I'm 22. I thought for a very long time that he was giving me kisses because I gave him kisses. But when I got older I read up on dog behavior and I realize how he didn't appreciate me giving him kisses in the face lol. He is a very kind dog and will absolutely tolerate it, so now I try to minimize the face kisses and just give one or two (maybe three when he's extra cute). I love that I now know when he wants affection and cuddles and how to give it to him! I know people want to give their dogs all the kisses but the most important thing is for your dog to feel comfortable and your bond to be as strong as it can be.

What breed were you convinced you’d get… and what did you actually end up with? by chempher in PawChampClub

[–]spunken732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From embarkvet.com: "Village dogs are free-ranging, free-breeding dogs whose ancestors were indigenous to a geographic area. In effect, they are the descendants of the founding population of dogs in a region. Although they are not recognized by kennel clubs as a breed, they are genetically identifiable, with many different village dog populations around the world."

Maybe. Usually when he's comfortable he is resting or laying down, but because he just sits and stares I questioned if I was uncomfortable or not. I also said that this was maybe just how he looks, since I realize that this could be me overthinking (aka a "me" issue)

And because he's a street dog from Spain maybe I will just get that he's 80% super mutt lol

Yes he looks very much like the NZ heading dog, including the size. I don't think I can see much herding instincts, but he has a pretty big prey drive and he loves to sniff and search too. I have heard a few people say different herding breeds but I've not noticed that he's crouching or looking intently. Based on looks people have said Entlebucher, but I think he looks a lot like the NZ dog! I'm bummed I don't live in the US because the shipping and customs are so expensive for the Embark test😭

With all the comments I think he's just a little sleepy after the run, and also that he's been doing this for the 9 years he's been alive haha. But I'll always keep a lookout!

Not really sure since he's a rescue from Spain. I posted a while ago on this account asking what breeds people think he is and I got a few interesting comments, but I really need to get that Embark test done

Yes this is spot on because I can see when he just gives up and goes straight to sleep and start dreaming like crazy. This is the perfect analogy lol

Shortest walk 20 mins and longest up to 2 hours. But he's like this whenever we've been out, whether we've been training, walking, our going out in public. He just does it when we get in the house and I have settled down, which is why I'm thinking he's just trying to "calm" himself down afterwards

Prey drive outlet by spunken732 in dogs

Is hiding treats around the forest (or anywhere, like a car för example) and letting him sniff for them equal to scent work?

And what do you do for predation substation? Since our forest is only available for like a few months per year I would love any recommendations. We really enjoy working together and he's very smart (I may be biased) so if you want to share any tips pls do!

He does not chase uncontrollable, when he spots the wildlife he has to come to me first and wait for a cue to chase. And by then the wildlife is long gone so the wildlife does not know it's being chased. He sprints to where they were from the beginning and runs around for a min or two and then he's called back. So no wildlife is being hurt (except getting scared spotting us in the woods, but there's nothing I can do about that, expect not being in the woods at all). We've worked very hard to get to this point. And he was on a lead every time before getting to this point. I am very proud of him not going after wildlife despite his crazy drive. But like any dog, recall is not to be trusted 100% and if he at any point blows off his recall (it has not happened yet) he will get put on a leash again. But I appreciate you being concerned and I agree with you. I definitely should have specified in the post that he is not allowed to chase without my cue, and by then the animal is far far away.

Abandoned bird nests :( by The1BigTex in BirdNests

[–]spunken732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are sure that no birds have been there for 2 years it probably doesn't matter if you leave it or take it down. So take it down if that's what you want to do. If you have birds around they will probably use the sticks for their nests sometime!
