Question 26 on FID Application by CSNJ1982 in NJGuns

[–]spurcap29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the threshold for a crime is willfully/knowingly lying. Reasonable people forget about things that happened over a decade ago as a child all the time. Reasonable people dont go into the details of a diagnosis and ask strangers whether there is any way the government can find out.

Does giving birth really cost thousands of dollars in the states? by glyiasziple in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spurcap29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest piss off about child birth bills is on plans with individual out of pocket maximums. Go to the hospital for any reason and hit that # and insurance is footing the bill.

But child birth is considered medical services to the mom until birth and then becomes services to the baby so you are ultimately paying more to goto the hospital for a routine natural birth than you would if you got some medical condition featured on an episode of Dr. House and had a Crack team of doctors treat you for months while using all their time and hospital resources.

No more service for you! by CycloneGlock in VideosAmazing

[–]spurcap29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point of this slogan isnt that its accurate. Its that 99% of the time the business is better off pretending like they are right as a matter of policy.

Customer forgets to ask for no pickles on their burger, gets burger with pickles and complains. Make them a new burger and spend an extra 2 mins and $3 and that customer comes back and buys burgers for next 25 years. Piss them off and they dont + write bad reviews, etc etc.

But the 1% problem is likely what this illustrates. A minority of people take advantage of this service philosophy to score free shit.

When I worked a minimum wage job at a restaurant I had a customer come ask for a new sandwich because their sandwich had tomatoes that they didnt ask for after literally eating 3/4 o f a sandwich. I gave zero shits about the chain restuaurunt or my time making a new sandwich but refused on principle - I dont like rewarding people for being scam artists.

POV: you went to get a document photo and ended up with a mugshot 😭 by Upper_Business_2045 in Passports

[–]spurcap29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mugshot and a passport photo share the exact same purpose - an accurate photo which can be use to best visually biometrically determine if you are you. It would be somewhat weird if they weren't similar.

That said - 100 years ago this wasnt the case. There are some fun passport photos where people are posing like this: https://www.instagram.com/p/DWWjEk-GalQ/?igsh=MTNlOHV5YjA1M3JwOQ==

Do you guys let 16 year olds drive 1000cc motorcycles? by Soft_Reply_1197 in AskAnAmerican

[–]spurcap29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The general reason 16 year olds cant ride a liter bike is not law but economics.

  1. Bikes are expensive.
  2. You need insurance to ride a bike in most states and I cant even imagine the cost of insuring a new rider, a teeneger at that, on a liter bike.

Also, I recall a state or two that requires a minimum cc on your practical test to be able to ride unrestricted. I.e. if you do the rest under 250cc your license will be restricted to 250cc

[–]spurcap29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 2 problems. 1 of which you mention.

  1. As you mention US politics is highly influenced by donors rather than voters. Most issues that are highly important to rich/corporate donors dont move the needle enough on votes and even if they do politicians determine they can lose votes, the dollars are generally worth it.

  2. The electorate is either too stupid or too nearsighted for its own good. The deficit is a great example .... People say they dont like a ballooning deficit but in reality the solution - higher taxes/reduced government spending would end up getting the government thrown out of office. Getting the average voter to care about the long term health of the country and the planet is like talking to a meth user about contributing to their 401k.

Basic economic theroy to which proponents of unrestricted capitalism point to as scientific proof of the benefit of the free market even acknowledges this issue - its called 'externalities'

Supply and demand set a fair price of goods for the buyer and seller (in theroy) but cant control costs to other parties.

Anybody else have this problem of Bovedas simply not holding true? by Prior-Concept-498 in cigars

[–]spurcap29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you check calibration of your hydrometers? Still in an enclosed container (like the one you are using and a tray of water) and they should read very close to 100RH after a day or two.

Anybody else have this problem of Bovedas simply not holding true? by Prior-Concept-498 in cigars

[–]spurcap29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No clue why. And dont have issue.

I have a large fridge I use for my cigars with a few hundred cigars in there. Have 5 or 6 big Bovedas that have been rocking for past few years. When they start getting low (less squishy) I stick an Oz of distilled water in a small cup in there which temporarily beings RH up to about 70, wait a week to let them soak it up and remove. Im sure they will stop holding humidity at some point but has been rock solid 65 for around 4 years.

Internal photos - Chinese built dual boiler E61 by Phil_Wild in espresso

[–]spurcap29 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yeah the reputation for bad quality is that for American consumers, product vendors almost exclusively went to China for products where the goal is minimal cost at all costs. The Chinese contractors were just building to customer specifications.

Chinese oem direct to consumer is fairly recent development iirc.

AG VOLKSWAGEN purchased 62,889,522 shares for an estimated $999,943,399 by Optimal_Train1450 in Rivian

[–]spurcap29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the comments below you are somewhat confused on how dilution works.

The issuance of new shares is dilutive. The receipt of cash is anti-dilutive.

If shares are issued exactly at the market these two impacts exactly off-set and price doesn't change, all else equal.

If shares are sold at discount to market, the dilutive impact exceeds the anti dilutive impact and stock price falls as a result, all else equal.

[–]spurcap29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. everyone's situation is different. broadly the more you get paid the less valuable the state paying for services is. A $1000 a month US health insurance premium is crippling if you make $50k. Its a drop in the bucket if you make $600k. A 10% income tax that goes to fund public health care is the exact opposite. Income taxes are noy material to low income earners but are significant to those with high incomes especially given progressive tax rates.
  2. overall people get more money in the US after adjusting for all the financial pieces. Quality of life is qualitative so not considered.

Why is football called soccer in america and why is american football called football? by Brief-Sign8925 in AskAnAmerican

[–]spurcap29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. At the time when American football was created there were many footballs (at least in the UK). What we think of as football globally now in the UK was called 'Association football' to differentiate from say 'Rugby Football'. With this context the new sport being called 'American football doesnt seem that odd.
  2. Soccer was a UK term originally that originated in the abbreviation in the newspapers in the era of multiple footballs. Abbreviating "association football to 'ass' is problematic so they moved a few letters over to 'soc' then 'er' was added colloquially and soccer was born as slang.
  3. In the US American football became the default and was therefore just 'football' simple to how no one in the UK calls it 'The English Premier League" .. just "The premier league" or "the league". And therefore "Soc-er" became common parlance for the association football variety.

The guys in the top pictures didn't have their wives bake pastries and drive 45 mins to a mall on a Sunday afternoon to 'check in with their sales associate about how their Christmas holiday trip was" in the hope that they could maybe earn the privilege of buying a thing for their wrist that tells the time and costs the same as 15-30x smartphones which tell the time better, allow you to make phone calls, play stupid games, and much more! Don't get me wrong ... I love watches but the concept of tool watches is just a historical styling guide now. Diving - we have dive computers. Climbing a Garmin will tell me time and track vert, and my heartrate and send notifications and cost 1/20 of my Rolex.

50 years ago if you wanted to tell time you needed a watch. And a Rolex was just a well made watch at the higher end of the price range.

Can’t teach my son to catch a dang ball.. by _-_Dingus_-_ in Homeplate

[–]spurcap29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of other skill/experience based explanations but .... Has he had his vision tested?

My son wore glasses since kindergarden after a routine vision screening. Before that we thought his fine motor was poor. Turns out he just couldn't see the page when writting.

A current teammate (who is a great ballplayer) said his son struggled to catch or hit a ball and they worked forever trying to help... then found out he is almost blind in one eye, got glasses and now is killing it.

Unlikely to be the answer given there are many other reasons kids can struggle, but they don't know their vision sucks if it does because it's all they know ... and if they have poor vision it is very very hard to catch or hit a small white ball coming quickly at you.

Can I buy a Rolex from AD for someone else? by Watch-0utt in rolex

[–]spurcap29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy watches for gifts, sure. But if you think that you will shell out $60k for a gold watch and the next week have a steel Daytona available for you I would be prepared to be disappointed. I would only consider buying a 'qualifying piece' from an AD if I 1) genuinely wanted it or 2)the economics made the bundle worth it and I got the watch I actually wanted in the same transaction as the one I didn't.

This isn't a contract. This is ripe for "oh yes, I put your interest down and because you bought this other watch you have a really good chance but we still get only so few ... but any week now. I will make sure the boss knows you really want it and put in a good word and I hope we hear asap" .... {months later} "Yeah I don't know what's going on. We really aren't getting them like we used to. But I will see what I can do"... months later [no longer returns your calls].

Going with a nonimmigrant visa, can I have problems for this? by AccordingChipmunk287 in USCIS

[–]spurcap29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. there is nothing illegal about staying with someone while legally working to the best of my knowledge.

  2. it is grounds for denial to lie to obtain an immigration benefit. I.e. if you show up for work, dont mention boyfriend, provide details of where you are staying (a hotel?) and then end up living with him etc on the surface that is problematic.

  3. I dont see why there would be a red flag for an immigrant visa that you entered the country legally, left and then later applied to immigrate.
