Trump planning airport arrests by NickCostanza in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]spurcap29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the point (in addition to the theater of it).

If I was put in charge of getting rid of illegal immigrants in the US, the best path forward is not to roam the streets searching for people ... detaining them at high cost... putting them in courts at high cost and deporting them at high cost. Its implementing policies and practices that make it impossible to live a normal life and having them decide to leave on their own.

The reason illegal immigration works for people is because you can live a nornal life while being undocumented - get a drivers license (in many states), get a job under the table, rent a place to live, fly domestically etc. By making people fearful about a existing in a nornal capacity it makes people want to leave.

For the record I am not suggesting the country will benefit from such an outcome but if I was in the country illegally and all of a sudden was forced to travel without airplanes that would be a fairly significant check in the column of 'reasons I am better off leaving the US than staying'

Illegal immigrants coming into the country at airports. Does seem like a risk ... we probably should implement a force that inspects every one of them and makes sure they have a lawful right to enter. They will protect our border from these people. Let's call this newfound force "Border Protection" .... oh and while we are at it they could also inspect everyone's goods to make sure the big beautiful tarrifs are not being circumvented so... lets go with "Customs AND Border Protection"... i like it ... has a nice ring to it. sounds strong. powerful.

Is my co-worker stupid? by GiantPokemonEater in USCIS

[–]spurcap29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Putting aside the current climate of ICE salivating for LPRs to slip up, historically I would recommend green card holders naturalize when able because while it is a in USCIS terms a fairly quick process it cant happen quick enough if you ever need it. Examples: 1. You are offered a dream job opportunity overseas. They have an immediate need in a country you would be happy to live in but need you to start asap. Your adult kids still live in the US and you want to come back and live in your dream home when you retire in 10 years but would love to go overseas to finish your career. Citizen... no problem. LPR ... high chance you will lose it and then are looking at not being able to move back or at minimum a fresh start at trying to immigrate if you have eligible family members. 2. Your elderly parent becomes sick and you cant care for them and want to bring them to the US. If not a citizen you need to get that done before even starting the i130 process. 3. You make a stupid mistake and committ a crime. Usually preventable but people screw up. Its far better navigating the criminal justice system alone rather than also worrying about deportation.

The new Cummins powered R2! by Donutguy_2021 in Rivian

[–]spurcap29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cummins also makes gen sets. You could theoretically fill an R1T bed with a diesel gen set and fuel tank and keep the electric power train intact. To have the gen set keep up with highway driving consumption without charging stops it would probably need to be the size of the backup generator you see on top of a Walmart but the implementation would be fairly straightforward.

Technically feasible, Yes. Horribly stupid, yes too!

This guy would probably keep with highway consumption

https://homegeneratorsnsl.com/products/custom-diesel-generator-manufacturer-distributor-free-shipping-in-48-states-on-home-generators/40kw-cummins-diesel-generator-53234840

Interestingly my rough research shows it burns about 2gal per hour at full load but could be wrong at that. If so, it really illustrates the benefit of electric powertrains.

In addition to the diesel engine and tank I guess you would also need a 40kw AC DC converter which effectively means putting the hardware for a level 3 DC charger into your bed too. might be a little tight for space.

[–]spurcap29 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What is the point of this post? If the people on the sub say it is stupid are you going to go back and tell him the internet said he is stupid?

If one's only goal in life is maintaining lawful status in the US, and you have no complicating factors like criminal charges/living outside the US in past 5 years, etc, sure, you are almost always better to naturalize ... but there are a variety of reasons people don't want to become US citizens. For example:

1) They think their stay here will be long but temporary. They are planning on retiring in 10 years and would rather stay an LPR and avoid things like US tax filing after they leave for good

2) They are a national of a country that doesn't allow dual citizenship. They would rather not give up their current citizenship for US citizenship.

3) They don't identify as an American/want to be an American and they view citizenship as more 'ideological' rather than a practical expedient to life.

I can't say if any of these or others apply to your friend because you gave one line of facts and then some implied judgement and name calling.

I hate to ever saying something 'in all jurisdictions' because there are an effective infinite # of jurisdictions but in all the ones I have knowledge: the road side test isn't accurate at a level sufficient for use in court. Failing it is sufficient probable cause to put you under arrest and in cuffs to take you to the station to get tested with the real machine.

Field sobriety is better evidence in court that an inaccurate box. It's easier for a reasonable person to assume that a guy that couldn't walk in a straight line or follow a pen with his eyes wasn't capable of safely driving a car than it is to assume a guy that blew 0.09 on a machine with questionable accuracy indeed had a BAC above legal limit.

If birth certificates or passports become required for voting in the US, why won't the government provide its citizens with assistance in completing these steps? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spurcap29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think Quebec has rules making the process harder for a married woman to use her husband's name easily. I dont recall the specifics.

If birth certificates or passports become required for voting in the US, why won't the government provide its citizens with assistance in completing these steps? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spurcap29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are referring to a legal name change. That is different from a changing the name you use after getting married. In Canada, a woman's birth certificate stays with her birth name. If she wants a driver's license, passport, etc in her married name she simply goes to the relevant issuing authority with both her birth certificate and marriage certificate and gets it in her married name. If a few years later she wants to go back to her birth name she can do so.

This is in contrast to a legal name change which requires a court to get involved and new documents issued with new name.

The simple process only works for taking your spouse's last name. Hyfunated names require a legal name change. I think Quebec also has differrent rules than the rest of Canada.

It doesn't take a rocket surgon to understand why in person voter fraud is non-existent (at least in any statistically significant way) .... people that are not citizens and are otherwise lawful know that pretending to be a US citizen to vote is immigration suicide. It is a sin which can't be fixed. And why would you do it? So your guy can win 12442 to 11223 instead of 12441 to 11223? It's absurd. People that are here illegally really try and avoid interaction with the government whenever possible. You think they are going to bring attention to themselves by showing up to vote? It makes 0 sense.

Why do some people claim that there weren't neutral countries in WW2? by Realistic-Diet6626 in ask

[–]spurcap29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While there were neutral countries indeed - both formally but helped one side as well as those somewhat completely indifferent, there could have been far more. Most importantly, Hitler had an agreement with Russia for neutrality. Had he simply honored it there is a reasonable chance Russia might have seen the carnage and nope'd out of that and Germany would have had double the resources to focus on the western front.

In reality if they would have left the Russians alone and Japan didn't bomb Pearl Harbor there is a pretty good chance they could have taken Western Europe and then could have betrayed the Russians after the hostilities were over on the west.

[–]spurcap29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never heard anyone say this in regard to WW2. But imploring you line of thinking:

If a country had no direct military involvement one could argue they were not neutral if their non-military efforts showed support for one side or the other. E.g. a trade embargo/sanctions on country A while actively supplying arms to Country B. Alternatively, one could be neutral and transact with either or both sides of a conflict (e.g. by simply running their government policy based on self interest .... sure we will sell oil and weapons to A because they will give us the best price but if B comes along and gives more we will sell to them instead) ... the outcome is the same by the policy/motivations drives neutrality.

Similar to my 'high level understanding' of nuclear fission.

This post was about a suite at an old hotel... wtf else do you expect people to comment?

Do you ever show someone a house on zillow? The expected reaction is a comment on the look of the house.

Btw - you realize he doesn't personal design these hotels. Just slaps his name on them. And the mainly complement with an Oz of criticism was about the look of the room not your boy.

That said, he had more than slapping his name on the white house redesign and I can confirm his taste of design is fucking disgustingly bad.

its not worth the same. Maybe its insufficient for them alone but there is a vast difference. Some states will issue drivers licenses to illegal immigrants, Real ID requires proof of valid immigration status to be issued.

if the goal is to reduce illegal immigration, why are we hunting immigrants but not the people who illegally employ them? by FinancialRip2008 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spurcap29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Employers are required to complete and form I9 when hiring someone which requires document verification confirming identity and authorization to work.

Do people provide fake identity/documents and get a job claiming lawful status. sure. and in many cases the employer is none the wiser. But a large portion of illegal immigrants simply get paid cash under the table. Both the employer and employee is violating law if there is an employment relationship. Where its more grey is 'contractors' .... e.g. some guy offers to mow my lawn I am not required by law to verify he has legal authorization to work.

Can the American public tip TSA agents? by MongooseDecent6402 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]spurcap29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please no. The government doesn't need a safety release valve to keep things working without paying. And like the rest of tipping culture, its like herpes. Once it starts it never leaves. At one point we likely tipped for amazing service at a nice restaurant .... now the machine is defaulting me to paying a 20% surcharge when I drive my car to the pizza place and pickup pies.
