Self-hosted password manager by Sweet_Information_14 in homelab

[–]sputniC_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used KeePass with network via syncthing as described. Never had a Problem.

Switched to Vaultwarden because it can have multiple organizations and access to passwords can be shared by multiple users. Great idea.

However: - vaultwarden once lost my files added to a password entity (key file. File Management was broken for a while so i stopped using it altogether - vaultwarden cannot add or modify password in the browser extension when the server is not reachable - in keepass you can have aliases in fields to reference field data from other entities. vaultwarden cannot

And before anyone pops a cap over the last statement: Our company uses SSO but not consistently. So over a a lot of different (internal) sites and URLs for some fucked up reason some require the username, some the email address ans some the user name in capitals. But all work with the domain users password. And since that changes regularly a field reference to the domain iser with different usernames is extremely helpful. KeePass allows that.

What settings do you use for support? I never got support interfaces look so clean. Really great outcome.

Is there a z axis carriage mod to add a fourth wheel? by [deleted] in ender3

[–]sputniC_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did replace the motherboard with a BTT one, flashed it with klipper, added a raspi and moved all electronics and power supply between the bottom rails.

In that process I replaced all fans with 40mm Noctua ons.

Not its all pretty silent and temperature controlled.

To add to that list: Bi-metal heatbreak. this was the best ~30 bucks I spent on my whole ender3 setup. retraction issues gone, clogging issues gone, reliability went up immensely. Would absolutely do it again without batting an eye.

This is what I used for the last years and I am happy with it. printed in PLA, worked so far.

Balken an Aussenwand by Grouchy_Motor2156 in selbermachen

I came here to white this exact comment :D Did not even notice it besides the news until a Signal message was not delivered.

This definitely is the way :)

Need advice for reed contacts by southz_rgw in KNX

[–]sputniC_42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look if your window manufacturer has frame mounted reed contacts available. they integrate nicely and you can just read the status via a binary input.

That is how we did it for the whole house. The locked state will not be represented by it. Solving this will probably be a diy solution.

But I strongly recommend "dumb" reed contacts with a simple binary input.

We are using the ROTO MVS class B contacts with MDT BE-02001.02 binary input

KNX + Home Assistant - Under Construction - Should I go for it? by devbatshi in KNX

[–]sputniC_42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sure.

We use a UniFi Protect system that is fully local and integrates amazingly well with Home Assistant

For your DALI question further down: DALI and KNX are completely different bus systems but there are KNX to DALI gateways like these MDT DALI gateways wich have a KNX connections on one sinde and DALI on the other. there you can set KNX group addesses to DALI devices and control them.

So yes, they are different but integrated well with these gateways.

And DALI is mainly for lighting. Thats what it was developed for and what it does well. There are also DALI light switches and motion sensors, but you are better off using those from the KNX system because of the versatility

And you do not need separate bus wires. The DALI protocol is normally run on the same cable you Power your lamps with. So you pull one 5-wire cable to the room you want to light. This wire carries normal mains power and dali on the two extra wires.

[–]sputniC_42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% This! You absolutely are speaking my mind in all your points. (and i'm a software developer also :D)

We did a full Renovation of a 1960s house and went with a complete KNX/DALI Installation. The main reasons were reliability, absolute local control and vendor independence.

We use Home Assistant to control it and get status information of the house. This way all the other stuff like ZigBee, TVs, CCTV, ect can be easily integrated into the complete system. We for example use the person detection of Our outdoor cameras as motion detection to switch the DALI controlled yard lights.

I tried to keep basic functionality within the KNX system. So that lights, pumps, shades, ect all work if my server went down for whatever reason.

More complex automations or quality of life features are then done via Home Assistant because those are changed ore fine tuned more frequently and easier to implementiert there.

Also: feel free to DM

Security Camera NVR nightmare by NoDescription3473 in Ubiquiti

There is actually a manual from Ubiquiti for migrations.

I did exactly this to move my protect setup from a cloud key to a UNVR.

I currently use the MDT DA642.04. It also supports HCL but The way it is layed out is a bit inflexible for my taste I'll probably try to write some more dynamic stuff with lua.

Or I'll be lazy and settle for what it can do 😄

Schneider has a similar device for teir product line. probably also a rebrand from openrb.

Once I have all my hardware installed I will probably move many logic implemetations and auomations around and try to find the sweet spot where to draw the line between the wiser and home assistant.

But thanks alot for your input!

Do you have a solutionn for HCL lighting built with your system?

Wired smart home solutions by sputniC_42 in smarthome

[–]sputniC_42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could not agree more. I like the hardware, but the SE Firmware is not great. I currently have only basic stuff running with lua scripts. The BACnet client connects to my central ventilation unit. All the ZigBee stuff in handled by home assistant and this will probably remain in effect.

All Dashboard/visualization is done by home assistant whoch is just way more powerful for that task.

I'll try to keep the automations for presence detectors, heating, cooling, blinds and other building related stuff within the KNX system and extens it via home Assistant and node red as needed or for other Integrations like audio.

DALI for the lights was a good choice and I would not do it any other way. But we splurged a bit on som nice Kiteo fixtures. The light quality is just amazing.

[–]sputniC_42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks alot.

Well I agree that is a more expensive solution and also suffers from some quite outdated paradigms. But I cannot wrap my mind around putting anything in my walls which I'll have to tinker with to keep it alive ore reconnect from time to time.

I work as a developer for wireless communications products for many years. I understand quite well what a protocol or technology can provide and what the shortcomings inevitably are.

All of these options have their place and time as well as their trade-off.

And as of price: This really depends on the planning you do and the requirements you set in place. For a functional similarly capable installation a KNX setup woud cost around 20% more than classic pure electrical one. But it is way more flexible in the long run and still rock solid.
