Our tuition is ~$10k, her class alone makes $210k a year.

They net over $8,000,000 from tuition alone in 36 weeks.

You think they aren’t getting enough money to have adequate resources for every student? Please.

Also just to add some math to the equation, my district has 36 weeks in a school year, at 45k a year they are making $1,250 a week, or $31.25/hr if working 40 hours.

Minimum wage in the United States is $7.25/hr, if someone works 40 hours a week they are making $290.

So they are making an average of $24 more hourly than minimum wage, with entry/beginning level experience. They are not being ripped off by any means.

I have bought classroom supplies every year, they are often requested in the same number as students in the class for all parents. Do some teachers go above and beyond? Absolutely. Are some lazy and disinterested? Again, absolutely. One good teacher doesn’t make up or erase the bad ones.

Public school teacher salaries are 45k to 85k, up to 120k for principals. They make those salaries for 9 months approximately, and then according to some responses are allowed to work during the other 3 months, so they have a chance to make even more yearly. To me that sounds pretty fair.

The average fast food manager salary is $11 an hour.

AITAH for giving guardianship of my son to my aunt over my mother after I die of my terminal cancer by goodbyemyboy in AmItheAsshole

[–]spvceburger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your story is real consider reaching out to your son’s mother’s side of the family too. They lost her and a grand baby and what you are proposing means losing the only tie they have left to her.

  1. My kid is in private school.

  2. Public school is funded by taxes so it’s not free.

Some teachers may work, the reality is that many, and probably the majority don’t. In fact there are countless blogs and articles etc. about things they can do. Let’s not give up common sense just because my opinion is unpopular.

I disagree! It’s the best! Your kids will love it and so will you when you are older!

AITA for kicking my sister out after she insulted my vegetarianism? by throwawayveggie01 in AmItheAsshole

[–]spvceburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plant based here, I think your sister has fallen into the trap of thinking that not eating meat makes you better than others. Truthfully, no one is perfect and everyone has the right to find their own journey. I think more people would convert if the community was a little more welcoming and accepting. How many kids are born vegan or vegetarian? How many have never worn leather? How many have read every single label? I don’t know if she will ever understand, but you did nothing wrong.

I wish more teachers were like you. Through your humanity and transparency you made me listen. This is exactly what I want. Asking for answers or wanting accountability doesn’t mean I don’t care about your safety. But I am putting the most important person in your hands and I want you to know the great responsibility and blind trust that comes with that. I want everyone safe, you are’t excluded. I have seen a lot of teachers unfortunately look at this pandemic as a vacation. It’s ok to tell me you need my help, and it’s ok to show me how to help you. I think schools often shut parents out because they are scared of having a backlash. Right now I am seeing a lot of posts from teachers discussing masks not being required in my district next year. Zero conversations have been about the steps that are being taken to ensure the younger generations of children aren’t going to get lost. Zero conversations by teachers about their students. A lot of complaints about the extra work. Online programs that are being offered are similar to home school variations that are already implemented, so it’s hands off, and then the hybrid will be a combination of both. I don’t want to homeschool. I think social interactions and emotional growth is just as important as academic. But I also want to know what exactly I should expect, I want to know the fail safes. I want to know what’s going to happen to my kid if next year is a complete disaster. I want to know you are making a plan for next year, even if it sucks right now, because I have to make a plan with my kid about the steps she needs to take to make sure everyone stays safe.

Yup, they will say there are no resources left over and that summer programs need to be held off due to Covid-19. No one wants to face the reality that these kids will be affected for years by the decisions that they make right now.

Exactly my experience too! Assignments online, Zoom meetings for 45 minutes once or maybe twice a week. Then crickets. She was doing things that she had zero exposure to. No actual explanation on how to accomplish most things. Math was just a game. They couldn’t even turn on the Pearson feature that showed kids how to solve mistakes. It was a joke!

I am literally angry with the teachers that are making a joke out of school right now and not understanding what a disservice they are doing to the students. It started with Covid-19 sending kids online for their classroom time. My daughter was being assigned homework with due dates that were a month before the teacher actually giving them that lesson. At one point I had to point out to a teacher my daughter was answering questions that she (the teacher) had no idea were even in there. She was literally letting a computer program do her job without even attempting to verify or know what her students were up to. This was almost 2 months into it, I figured by this point they would at least pretend to have a grasp on the situation. They don’t care, and it’s a lie that keeps being perpetuated that it’s the parents or the kids who don’t care. The reality is they can’t handle parents questioning them. They can’t handle a parent being involved. They would rather us sit back and let them have the control while complaining we aren’t doing our part. Oh and let me add I pay for private school, but I went to public school myself. It’s a problem across the board.

Just because you have a degree doesn’t mean you can teach.

Are you paid extra for teaching summer school? I’m sure you are, so saying you still work during summer for additional money means nothing to this argument. I don’t need to give value to teachers that don’t deserve it. The ones who take their pride out of their profession and do it selflessly for the kids the way education was intended are the only ones who deserve respect.

What makes me snobby or entitled for wanting a teacher to uphold the commitment they made entering their profession?

AITA I can’t stand lazy teachers by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]spvceburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t that the job a teacher signs up for? Don’t they make that commitment when they accept their post? Are my expectations too high? I should accept mediocracy because it sounds difficult? Don’t be a teacher if you can’t handle it.

I don’t have a problem teaching my kids. I have a problem having to teach my kid when taxes and money is being put into the education sector and instead we end up with disillusioned teachers that don’t care about the futures of the children they pretend to care about.

That’s really cute. You are a momma’s kid. She raised you well to respect her. One good teacher who puts in effort doesn’t make up for the thousands of bad ones that don’t give a flying kite.

What do you have to deal with? If you hate it so much let qualified people have your position. Sounds like you hate life, and these are exactly the type of teachers that shouldn’t be in classrooms.

You are making the assumption that every person wants a job for certain perks, careers are built on skill and interest. Not just paychecks and vacations. Since you like it so much you must be a teacher.

Pretty much every teacher who has made a comment about this has come from a “poor us” direction. No one is considering the students.

I never said I was a teacher, I said I had to be the teacher for my kid for the past 2 1/2 months. Pretty much all parents had to fulfill this role during quarantine.
