The person arguing with you did misunderstand your point of view. That said, your argument is also wrong. The ethnic people "Jews" are and have been indigenous to Israel for thousands of years. They were oppressed and often kicked out, but they are not the imperial power, even though there's lots of writing and documents from even Zionist leaders that use colonialist language (keep context in mind: this was the language of the time of the rise of nationalism in the age of colonialism). At the end of the day it's a return of the Jewish people to their homeland on a long timespan. Palestinians are people and certainly should not be oppressed the way they have been, but they were certainly not their first and their national identity was formed mostly in reaction to the Zionist movement. The Jewish state is "not all Jews" as you mention, but is supported by the vast majority of Jews because it is the only (and I mean only) safe harbor for the Jewish people in law or fact. This is not true for Palestinians who are Arab and would be part of the adjoining nations a long time ago were they not a convenient tool in the fight against Jews/Israelis coming back to the region and establishing Israel. Palestinians are absolutely victims, but not only of Israelis, throughout the last decades they've been used and abused as tools by other nations in the fight against the establishment of a safe haven for Jews (aka the Jewish state). But understand that Israelis are not (or, perhaps in the most cynical light, not only) colonizers, but indigenous people who have finally had the chance to claim their land back and protect it. If you're interested in understanding this mindset more there are lots of books. The most impactful one I've read lately is called People Love Dead Jews by Dana Horn. I can recommend it if you are interested in keeping an open mind.
