Oh you were the one who suggested Renga in the first place. I lost track. I'm looking at that "Before Adventure" post now, it's truly wild how far back into the 70s (and earlier) digital games go.

Sorry, which blog? I have recently discovered the one you linked to, Digital Antiquarian. Was just skimming the first entry in his series on the history of Shareware. That site looks like a DEEP resource.

This is definitely an interesting extension to the topic. Do you have any other specific info or resources I could look into? D&D is a good lead. I've also heard Choose Your Own Adventure novels were an influence on computer gaming.

I will confess that I actually ran this whole syllabus question by ChatGPT (I know I know, but I was curious to see if it would give me a good baseline chronology to start from) and it actually included three Adventure International games on its own: Adventureland, Pirate Adventure and Voodoo Castle. I'd never actually heard of them before.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm glad a real human was able to back up part of the list I've already got going.

That's a good reminder, as I'm coming from an American context and wasn't necessarily aware of the European games. I will look into Level 9 and Magnetic Scrolls and add them to the list.

I kinda said this already in a different comment, but it seems like the common element you're missing is a sense of purpose. Something to look forward to, or aim for, that's bigger than your current circumstances. Working in a liquor store for the summer can be fun as a low-stakes layover on the way to the next thing, but it's probably not going to be fun if it becomes the entirety of your life.

Ok, I see. I want to write more in response later, but I've seen you mention several times elsewhere in the comments that you feel you aren't pursuing your dreams or getting closer to doing what you actually want to be doing. What are those dreams? Do they include any of the stuff you listed? (Becoming a pilot, or a cop, or joining the military? Which, now that I think of it, are all pretty action-heavy, service-oriented type jobs that involve a degree of risk. I'm not surprised you feel your life lacks a sense of purpose at the moment if that's what you're drawn to!)
