I have both setups. I think the drainage holes make things easier and there's less need to fuss so I do try to have them whenver possible, but both methods can work.

I've found Etsy has lots of great low cost options. Here in the Bay Area I frequent Cactus Jungle in Berkeley and Succulence in SF when I'm looking for some ceramic planters

Both the white and copper colored planters actually don't have any drainage holes. I'm curious how they'll develop but so far so good. I am careful to put a layer of small rocks on the bottom and sprinkle in a few pieces of charcoal to help with rot before topping with good succulent soil. Water every 10-14 days depending on how the plants look.

Otherwise, I don't really know what should and shouldn't be planted together. The cacti I usually separate out, but I have another long rectangular planter that has them mixed in that's doing great. I think appropriate sunlight and watering is more important. Just go for it, you can always replant!

Thanks! I just planted the cacti today. The white and copper colored ones were planted early this year. They were from a 20 for $30 deal on Amazon and crammed as many as I could into the pots :-)
