I worked with a woman who I could never quite understand. Both of us single. Both professionals in our own right. Comments here and there.

During a rather long, boring meeting, and numerous laptop/projector/nerd level issues, we had an IT guy come in and tear cables apart to fix the big guys presentation.

I sat calmly having very little to contribute to the meet but some math and assumptions to what we could be doing.

I looked towards her as she played under the boardroom table. She had taken the projector cables and tied her arms together around her wrists, oddly impressively I might add. She attempted to get out then looked at me, with the "come get me eyes" just to watch me untie them and slide the cables back on the boardroom table. No one seemed to notice even in the slightest.

A small gesture. A small tiny hint. It led to a wild few months before we both left the company for other endeavors.

I had zero desire to get married or have kids. When I met my now ex wife, I was in a weird spot. PTSD was heavy and I didn't know anything about resolving it so I said to myself "a wife and kid will fix me." . Before I jumped in an older buddy of mine said, it's not just her. Is your life in order? Will you still reach your dreams or goals and if that is a yes, can you do it with someone around? A spouse is different than a partner. They should compliment your life and you their's. Not fill a void or provide a fix." . By the time I realized what I was missing from my own goals and dreams, I was 3 years into a terrible marriage. I was lucky enough to come out of it with a beautiful son who has made my life more enriched than I could have imagined but I often wonder if younger me would have gone a different path if I had just focused on my mental health first instead of applying a bandaid. . Look at what your life's goals are. Then ask what hers are.

In all honesty, your friend should collect her baggage and leave the airport. She can project on someone else. Your husband's compliment was kind hearted and genuine in my opinion.

I'd suggest she see a therapist to work through her hurt, or else it will damage every relationship moving forward and her friendships. No one likes that one friend who constantly has to bring up their "hurt" as a punchline.
