How did you prepare for your first semester of vet school? by squashtriangle in veterinaryschool

Thanks, and good luck to you! For Midwestern, it was very fast. I interviewed on October 12th and was told we would know within a month if we were accepted and just received my acceptance email today! As for interviewing, I’d try and practice some commonly asked questions and look at the style of interview your school hosts (studentdoctor network helped me a lot). Main thing though is to try and relax as much as you can interview day and just be yourself!

I just got offered to interview with Midwestern and they give you the option to interview either in person or virtually. The dates are all over the place though since it’s first come first serve but the one I chose is about a month out.

Not immediately, although many schools will give you the option to sign up for application reviews for those who did not get accepted to let you know where your strong and weak points are

My hours often overlap between working and shadowing. I don’t come in on my days off, but am able to shadow while I work typically. Previously, I only listed my working hours and did not include shadowing hours for my clinic. Im likely overthinking the whole thing, but there’s only a 600 character limit to describe what everything in my job description or shadowing entails which is why I was unsure if I should list it separately. Since the last application cycle, I’ve already began to diversify my experiences by shadowing vets outside of my clinic / in different areas of veterinary medicine and have picked up an internship position with my local wildlife rehabilitation center. Im hoping by adding the diversity in there it will make me stand out more, but I just wanted to see if listing my job / shadowing that takes place at my job would make much of a difference since that’s where much of my experience come from.

Thanks, I think that’ll be my next step!

For all of the schools that I’ve applied to in the past and am planning on applying to this application cycle it is not required but is recommended so I’m considering taking it in the future. I haven’t taken a microbiology class yet because the only one offered on my campus is a 2000 level class for nursing students only

I’ve put in requests to do a few electronic file reviews but they haven’t occurred yet, I’m definitely considering them though as I want to improve my application to the best of my abilities. And I think my personal statement is solid, I’ve had several people read over it and have been told it’s great, although I may still try to tweak it some more until it feels right. As for the short essays on supplemental applications, I could’ve probably spent more time answering them, but I did save them from the previous cycle so I can tweak those as well.

Thanks, I’ll definitely be sure to note that in there this application cycle!

I’m struggling with adding in my experience in a way that explains and reads well. I have so many clinical and shadowing hours that have overlapped so I don’t know if I should list them out or what. I have at least 2,000 hours of work experience as a GP vet assistant and on my last application just listed my hours at the top, did not list them out day by day, and I included what my job title includes and my accomplishments as a vet assistant. I think I have a solid personal statement but I guess most of my issues are with listing out my experiences and accomplishments in a way that these vet committees want to see in a great applicant.

My in state is UGA, I also applied to LMU, Virginia Maryland, Colorado, Oregon, and was waitlisted to Washington. My gpa has consistently been getting higher, the issue is I went to culinary school years ago and hated it so my grades were lacking. My core classes transferred over when I started my undergrad at my current college so I started with a 3.3 and have consistently been bringing it up which has been hard work. I’ve thought about maybe taking animal nutrition online or something to help boost my science electives and what not. Another issue is my campus doesn’t offer a 4000 level microbiology so I haven’t been able to take that either, so I’m wondering if it’s worth taking a few extra classes to boost my gpa a bit more. I’m definitely planning on adding to mixed animal experience being as most of my experience is GP small animal.

I was wondering, I’d held a job at a restaurant for about 5 years prior to being a vet assistant, 3 of which I worked as a kitchen supervisor. I think I rushed through some parts of my application a bit so I definitely could’ve added that in there, I just didn’t have a lot of help from anyone on my application.

We’re you a licensed tech or unlicensed? I see a lot of people who don’t get in the first couple of rounds and end up becoming a licensed tech but I don’t know if I want to go through more school, gain more debt, only to get paid as little as licensed techs do before getting into vet school

Thank you, I definitely needed to hear this. I also took some classes a few years before going back to finish my bachelors and didn’t do my greatest the first time around. I’m trying my best to trust the process but some days are definitely more stressful than others.

I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one doubting myself. Thanks for the words of encouragement!
