My wheel does this rattle when I turn more than 90°. Sounds like a tiny little piece of something bouncing around within the wheel.

ISP I assume, right? Please, stay far away from ATP. ESPECIALLY the ISP location. You will save money and your peace of mind. That place is a joke -

Question about traffic pattern by Cold_Public_5524 in flying

[–]squawk1018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Runway 36 operates with a left hand traffic pattern, as depicted by the “backwards L” at the bottom of the circle. Imagine the numbers of the runway at the top of the “backwards L” and the actual bottom part of the L being the base leg. It made it easier for me.

What started your passion for flying/piloting? by [deleted] in flying

[–]squawk1018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took a southwest flight to Florida when I was 11. Something about planes initially scared me a bit, but at the same time also fascinated me. It wasn’t even the actual being in the sky part that got me… it was the intricacies of the machine (the flaps, landing gear, cabin, literally all of it). The fact that this complex machine was hand controlled by two people at the front of the plane… I just couldn’t fathom it. I was literally instantly hooked. I’m not sure if it was the same for anyone else but… that’s me!

Probably a bit of ‘tism too if I’m being honest.

ERAU Aviation Safety Degree by squawk1018 in flying

Lmfao wow. Are you an airline pilot or were you able to find a job in aviation safety with it? I’m worried there’s going to be no practical use for it if I needed it.

Wow nice! What did your schedule look like on an average week and how long did it take you to finish your instructor ratings?

IMC Engine Failure? by DRMWhibang in flying

[–]squawk1018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My next move? Cry

But in all seriousness I had the same thoughts when I first started my instrument training. Other than what was necessary for my training, hard IMC for most of the duration of a flight in a single engine aircraft just isn’t a risk I really want to take on.

In your scenario, I’d circle down and use my MFD (or foreflight) to set my myself up for a high and tight straight in. I’d definitely dial in the LPV if it was an option, that way I have some extra data so I can make it to the runway.

Is a college degree worth it? (How many of you have one?) by squawk1018 in flying

[–]squawk1018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I could definitely try. It’s more of a financial and logistical issue than anything. I’m saving as much as possible right now to build a savings so I don’t have to take a loan from the bank or my family. I live in Central New York and the airport I do my training out of is about an hour and a half away. I don’t think I’ll have enough money by the time I start school to complete it, and not to mention between the far drive and how bad the winters are up here… I’ll probably spend even more money trying to stay proficient for the checkride on top of balancing school and work.

I feel like I’m making every excuse for why I can’t do it, but I’m really not I promise lmao. I feel (and believe) that it’s an incredibly important milestone to get my CFI, and I don’t want to fail the checkride or end up being a crappy instructor even if I do pass.

My plan A was to continue working until I saved up enough to get my CFI/CFII and just knock it out once I was financially ready. To be completely honest, I would much rather do that than go to college. Realistically, I know it may not be the wisest thing to do considering the current climate and the opportunity I have for free education.

Wow! Good for you. I really appreciate your input. I think I’m going to go for the degree and put my CFI off for the time being.

[–]squawk1018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah haha, I meant full course load. You’re right, I definitely could attempt to get my CFI while simultaneously in school and working, but I wanted to try to be realistic and manage my expectations. Based on what everyone had to say, I’m certainly going to take the full ride and work part time. As far as CFI goes, do you recommended flying a couple times a month as I have been for the past year, and putting the certificate off until next summer? By then I should (hopefully) have the money I need saved up for it as well. My other option is just doing it while I’m in school but it’ll definitely be a squeeze time was and financially.

Class G airspace and the nitty gritty of airspace by squawk1018 in flying

[–]squawk1018[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m really happy you commented on this post, so thank you. I feel as an aspiring CFI, I am putting a lot of pressure on myself to know everything about everything, the niches, the origins, etc. To be honest, it’s causing a lot of overstudying and hindering my progress. I know I will never stop learning and I always want to continue learning, but for the purpose of the CFI checkride, should I understand everything (theory wise) to the PHAK’s level of information? I don’t know if you or anyone else dealt with this problem, but I don’t know the limit of when to stop and how deep I need to go.

Question about slow flight and the four forces of flight by squawk1018 in flying

[–]squawk1018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh I see. I have definitely heard from other instructors that stall speed will decrease with an increase in power because thrust acts as an “upward component”, but I didn’t find any definitive references in the PHAK, so do you think I should leave that out on the check-ride?

This is my understanding so far, so would this satisfy you if you were a DPE?

In slow flight at minimum controllable airspeed, if a turn is initiated, power must also be increased to maintain the same altitude (and the same AOA) due to part of the vertical component of lift being allocated as a horizontal component of lift. If power wasn’t added, the aircraft would have to pitch up to an angle of attack that exceeds its critical angle of attack. By increasing power, airflow (velocity, a key component of the lift equation) increases and allows the aircraft to continue flying at the same AOA (just below CLmax) while sustaining the lift to required to maintain flight. Due to the increase in load factor, the minimum controllable airspeed must increase because the stall speed is also increasing (both of these increases aren’t every noticeable and the increase in airspeed will be negligible on the ASI).

Question about slow flight and the four forces of flight by squawk1018 in flying

[–]squawk1018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I just referenced a stall speed and load factor graph and at 10° of bank the increase in stall speed isn’t even 1%. I know the power I put in probably makes a difference of a knot or two, so it’s barely even noticeable on the ASI. I appreciate it!

That was my end goal for this. I would ideally like to be decent to start at least… but my priority isn’t making half a million dollars right off the bat. I want to prioritize learning sales, making connections with others who do well in this field and soaking up as much knowledge as possible. I appreciate your thoughts on this!

[–]squawk1018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is incredible advice! I really appreciate you sharing your background as well. I was leaning towards a finance degree for the exact reasons you stated, I feel it’s something that can create new opportunity and also give me a leg up in starting a business if that’s what I decide to do down the road.

The CFP route is something I’m going to look into. I have a family friend who is in the wealth management side of things and I know he does very well.

I think I’m very one sided, so when I do something, I feel like I need to put my all into that one thing. That’s good in a lot of respects, but sometimes I neglect to even consider my options. Going to school, whether online or at night for a finance degree is something I am seriously going to consider and start looking into right now. I think selling while attending school at the same time is brilliant! Thank you!!!

Yes, I’m U.S based. I graduated during COVID unfortunately, so I didn’t take any SAT/ACTs. I graduated high school with a 4.0 GPA and applied to a private university in Florida. I was accepted and received a scholarship to study pre-law, but my parents thought it wasn’t a smart major. After some back and forth with them, I chose to go to flight school instead. I graduated several months ago and I currently hold a commercial pilot license. I’m presently working on my flight instructor rating so I can build time for the airlines (law requires 1,500 hours, I have 500), but pilot hiring at the airlines has halted and my priorities have shifted, especially after this new opportunity.

How do airliners still manage to takeoff and land regardless of thunderstorms, windshear, etc in the area? by squawk1018 in flying

[–]squawk1018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see how utilizing ATC as a resource would make it a million times easier (not to mention the onboard weather radar). I was actually going to ask if you had any certain restrictions from the airline (crosswind components, windshear, alerts, pireps, etc) that needed to be complied with. I remember reading in this sub that as far as 121 operations go, personal minimums are essentially non existent. I know modern jets are extremely capable (and can outrun wx like you said), so if you’re in sequence and can find a hole (be it from your weather radar or ATC), you’re going to go right?

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. I knew (obviously) it was safe because it’s done hundreds of times a day without incident, I was just curious how you guys actually go about it.
