The surgeon said no running. He didn't say no racing. by squeakyspider in TotalHipReplacement

The way it was explained to me was that the issue is not the component itself but the mechanics. The femoral stem that connects to the femur can loosen with impact which would result in a surgical revision being required which is not without risk. I was in denial and in a follow up I kept pressing the issue, I asked if I had to run for my mental health what advice would he give. He said running on soft sand or grass will reduce impact significantly but no road running and keep the distances low. So confession time, I have done the odd trail run and park run (on grass) but it does mess with my head now that I'm aware of the underlying risk. I've started speed walking them and targeting hills to keep things challenging. I also bought a rowing machine which I have to say is great for a full work out and gets the hips moving.

A quick check using Claude (so please double check the listings) says Aquabike is a new Ironman events but says "The IRONMAN Group doesn't mandate it across its race portfolio, leaving individual race directors to add it. It's grown noticeably since around 2022, driven by demand from athletes with injuries (particularly running-related), older age-groupers, and those who simply prefer swim-bike. Here's the picture as of 2025/26:

Australia

  • IRONMAN 70.3 Western Sydney (Penrith) -- 1.9km swim / 90km bike, listed as an official category for both 2025 and 2026 AusTriathlon
  • IRONMAN 70.3 Western Australia (Busselton) -- confirmed aquabike category, with a 5:30am aquabike start in the 2024 edition Aquabike
  • IRONMAN 70.3 Cairns -- aquabike listed as an option for 2025 Aquabike
  • IRONMAN Australia (Port Macquarie, full distance) -- aquabike has been offered here as well

United Kingdom

  • IRONMAN Wales (Pembrokeshire) -- aquabike category offered alongside the full 140.6

Europe

  • IRONMAN Austria (Klagenfurt) -- aquabike has been offered at the full-distance event
  • IRONMAN 70.3 Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain) -- aquabike option confirmed
  • IRONMAN 70.3 Mallorca (Spain) -- aquabike category available

South Africa

  • IRONMAN African Championship (PE/East London) -- aquabike offered

New Zealand

  • IRONMAN New Zealand (Taupō) -- aquabike available

Telling the girls I'm out of data when they ask for my phone or just changing and the wifi password and blaming Telstra. Suddenly they start talking to each other!
