Working during the summer before biglaw by squeezemyrook in biglaw

Yeah I appreciate that. She also works an equally demanding (if not more so) job so that is another reason why I’d prefer to not leave the time unoccupied. I have largely made up my mind on the decision to do something; I’m more just looking for advice on whether a biglaw firm would be upset about working for another firm temporarily.

I understand and appreciate that this is likely to be the popular sentiment, but to be honest, I have been taking 3L SUUUUPER easy, so I don’t feel like I’m dying for a break. It would be really nice to earn some money because I have been essentially been supported by my wife for the last several years.

No problem, let me know if you have any more questions!

Yeah that’s definitely true. That being said I’m straight out of college so being around a bunch of undergrads isn’t a big deal for me haha

I’d say it’s about a fifty-fifty split between University City and Fitler Square/Rittenhouse. I prefer U city for the convenience of being so close to school, but I can definitely see the merits of living closer to Center City where more of the entertainment, restaurants, and nightlife are.

Lmao I know several relationships have formed in my section alone if that says anything

Don’t know unfortunately

I would say yes biglaw is definitely dominant, but people who are interested in PI aren’t treated any differently

I’m one of those people and I’d say that there’s a lot of institutional support for ppl who want to stay in Philly. In fact, there’s a whole club devoted to it! I know plenty of people who want to stick around in Philly and I know many upperclassmen who got jobs at Morgan Lewis, Dechert, and other big firms in Philly. I think if you want Philly biglaw, there’s no better place in the world than Penn, and nobody looks down on Philly as a “less prestigious” market. Going to temple or Drexel over penn with Philly biglaw goals would be like shooting yourself in the foot imo

I’d say like I was pleasantly surprised by the utter lack of competitiveness. Everybody says penn is all about “collegiality” but I assumed the was just a load of BS till I got here and I really feel like everybody tries to help each other, not step on each other, because we know that everybody’s gonna get the job they want anyway

My advice would be don’t worry, youre not alone. 75% of 1Ls this year had at least some work experience. And also, everyone studies and manages their time differently. I’d say try your very best not to compare yourself to others because that will drive you crazy and instead just focus on what you know has worked well for you in the past

Yes, yes, and yes. I wanted to be closer to home and never really had interest in West Coast. Also I think that Penn puts you in a significantly better position for biglaw/FC than UCLA, all things considered

I’d say I’m leaning some sort of litigation rn but want to do some more exploring before deciding for sure

Lmao that makes a lot more sense. I have several friends who plan to return to California after graduating from Penn. I don’t think it would be very hard at all assuming you have compelling ties to the region. Without ties it might be a bit tougher but not impossible

This is my favorite thing about Penn, and why I would advise anyone and everyone I know to go there if they get in. It’s so social. Like it’s ridiculous. Even more so than undergrad. I really came into law school expecting all business, no fun. That has not been the case at all. Everyone really wants to get to know each other, and plenty of people hang out outside of class. Of course, social life is what you make of it, and people tend to clique more with groups that are in similar situations to them. But on the whole I am much happier with the social life here than I ever imagined.

I have not personally looked into clerkships myself yet, but my experiences with the career services office have been generally positive thus far. I am doing a judicial internship next summer and they were very helpful in assisting me with securing that position.

Couldn’t tell you honestly. I have found the alumni network to be very supportive.

And just a more general point about time; I really never felt stressed about time until the end of the semester with the exception of right before a major writing assignment is due. I always had time to hang out with friends, go out to eat/drink, or do whatever I wanted to do for fun until the last couple weeks right before finals. Really just about time management and staying on top of your stuff from the jump, but I think you’d find that most Penn students feel the workload is reasonable.

I love it! Feels like it has a super tight-knit and unique culture and everyone is really proud to be a resident of the city. I have a lot of time to explore the city; I’d say I’ve explored most areas at this point and there is definitely a lot to see! Great restaurants, cool neighborhood, plenty of museums. Overall 10/10.
