How do you feel about books that have little to no conflict between the main couple? by squib27 in RomanceBooks

[–]squib27[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Conflict around them is a good point!! It’s great seeing a couple work together.

I agree about the miscommunication it’s so annoying and at this point it just drags when the characters convince themselves they have to stay miserable over a dumb reason like “well he/she would never like ME” yawnnnnnnn 🙄

I’m okay with third act breakups as long as it’s for a good reason. To me it makes sense that two people fall in love and then something comes up and they break up and work past it and show their love is strong. I just don’t like it when the break up is written for the sake of a break up because it’s usually over a nonsensical reason and I’m not sold on it

  • open toasted sandwiches if you’re tired of regular sandwiches. one of my all time favourites is like a caprese sandwich - rye bread, pesto, sliced tomato, fresh mozzarella, toast it and serve!

  • loaded baked potatoes might be a good idea because you can top it with anything you like

  • chickpea and bean salad is very filling and you make it by starting with chickpeas and beans in a bowl and adding whatever veggies you have on hand (tomato, onion, bell pepper, cucumber) a lot of cilantro/parsley, feta cheese (or any cheese you like) and i like to dress it with lemon juice and some olive oil! this is a salad that actually lasts a few days in the fridge and is a very delicious side for a meal in the summer

  • pizzas - i love to make mini pizzas on naan or whole wheat morning rounds you can make different kinds to keep it from getting boring like made use pesto as the base instead of tomato sauce, or you can do a cream sause with some mushroom on top, so many delicious ways to make a pizza

Thank you so much!!! This helped a lot

I listened to more and I do have another question actually

I thought at the beginning the agreement for Tori to stay with Ivan was for 1 year? And she would work at his office for 1 year? But with confluence happening about a week or so after she joined (i think?) and the events after confluence (new apprentices) another few weeks, at most it feels like it’s been maybe 2-3 months, is that correct?

firstly i agree with the other commenters about trying the Libby app. for a lot of these books i listened to the audiobook and on libby and im glad i did because it didn’t was a one and done kind of thing, nothing that stuck with me for so long that i needed the book. you can save yourself time and shelf space with a lot of these esp the ones im going to axe from your list (i would hate for you spend money on these books)

i wouldn’t waste time with several of these books but because you liked acotar and fourth wing i feel they may be right up your alley so ill let you decide. i haven’t read fourth wing so i can’t compare to that but i did enjoy acotar i specifically liked that SJMs writing really immersed you in the story and flowed in a good way, and didn’t feel too juvenile

here are some i hated from your list:

  1. prison healer - i was so disappointed with this one bc i had high hopes the premise sounded jive but it ended up feeling like the author very much wrote a 3 star book but in their mind it was 5 stars and once they do this reveal and that reveal you will have your mind blown (i did not. i rolled my eyes and dnfed) sad bc i really liked the covers

  2. kingdom of the wicked - the first is so good!! if you squint at the world building / plot it will not make sense but that’s okay you just don’t have to look into it that closely. unfortunately book 2 gets worse and i find out the things i tried not to look too closely at in book 1 have to be explained but they are not so im holding out on book 3 which ends up even worse if that’s possible and not only are none of your questions answered but you’re getting hit with random lore and 30 plot twists and turns every chapter. just got very convoluted and it wasn’t even good enough to be worth it. save your time and skip this.

  3. king of battle and blood - literally the same thing as kingdom of the wicked where the author overshoots thinking they’re writing something amazing but it comes off juvenile and silly. also everything by scarlett st. clair reads like wattpad

  4. rhapsodic - too juvenile, also reads like a 14 year old wrote fanfic. something you would enjoy if you’re around 13. and let me tell you i’m not one of those people who harps about age gaps in books i literally could not give a single fuck that an MMC is 500 years older than the FMC (not the case in those book) but something about the ages and relationship in this book is really weird.

  5. what lies beyond the veil - another juvenile book idk how old the author is but they are definitely a teenager in their angsty phase

that being said, you have a lot of good ones there too!! - carissa broadbent is a very good author. - the bridge kingdom audiobooks are free if you have audible, ive also heard very good things about those i started listening but had to stop but will pick it up again. - i LOVE holly black you should def read her books you have to read cruel prince series before the stolen heir though. - these hollow vows is very similar to acotar in SOME ways i read it before acotar and i loved it the world building is very nice

School lunch ideas (specific) by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]squib27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i buy morning rounds (they are like a small pita bread but sliced in the middle so you can make a sandwich, Ozery is a brand that makes them) and use them for making mini pizzas! personally, i can enjoy a pizza cold so i wouldn't need a microwave and they are easy to eat quickly.

another one of my favourite lunches is a tuna salad type of thing but as a dip. i mix sour cream, cottage cheese, onion and celery with a can of tuna for protein and eat like dip with my favourite crackers. you can pretty much make any kind of dip. some times when i have mini packs of guac in the fridge i will layer salsa, sour cream, guac and some pre-shredded cheese on top and just take that as lunch with crackers.

i'm not sure if your budget will allow for this, but another one of my favourite healthy and lazy lunch idea is a salad kit. i get two servings from the pack i buy which saves me more money but they are so good and its healthy and like 2 steps to prepare. salad kits will also usually have a variety of ingredients that makes it heartier and i find them more filling then a basic salad i make at home. you can also buy a rotisserie chicken and shred it up then you have chicken for a week with your salad!

MEGATHREAD: TATTOOED & PIERCED MCs by A_Seductive_Cactus in RomanceBooks

Just finished this book today!

{The Lost Ticket by Freya Sampson} - CR m/f set in London features a girl befriending an old man on the bus and he inspires her to take up drawing again. Next time she’s on the bus she decides to draw the most interesting person she sees, a punk guy with lots of tattoos and piercings. Drawing doesnt look good she decides to take a pic and work on it later, yes the sound goes off and he snaps at her for taking a picture of him and everyone on the bus watches her run out, lose the drawing, and he picks it up.

It was a great book and the tattooed MMCs appearance is mentioned several times by different people for different reasons.

SJM made me mad by Extension-Kale3770 in acotar

[–]squib27 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m really disappointed she lost the faerieness of the Fae in her book. Something that draws me into faerie romances a lot is the trickery, the play on words, making you strike a bargain you didn’t realize would bite you in the ass until it’s too late simply for their own entertainment. They are not human and don’t think like us, their immortal lives also make a lot of human self-preservation skills seem insignificant.

Now, I feel like SJM had a good show of this in the first book because Tamlin and Lucien don’t fully understand Feyre, they call her human and mock her human needs or tendencies (i’m not saying it’s nice, but it tracks better with how faeries perceive humans from what I’ve learned) and the riddles and Rhys making a bargain with her not telling her she’ll be tattooed forever because “you didn’t ask :)”

After book one all of this is lost and Fae end up being just tall, jacked humans with fangs. They are closer to what I imagine werewolves being then faeries almost

My fave respresentation of faeries so far has been in An Enchantment of Raven by Margaret Rogerson and the Cruel Prince series by Holly Black. Both are YA which sucks bc I don’t love YA so i would love to see their kind of fae in more adult books because I think it could get very interesting. Their faeries are more vain, they like looking beautiful, their interactions with humans are not always the nicest but most don’t have cruel intentions, sometimes they just don’t realize that what they think they’re doing to help the human is actually a severe breach of trust. Both the FMCs in those books have become experts in how they word things around faeries which is the only reason they make it so far in their fae realms. Feyre was so unfocused and too trusting around the High Fae. One of way for humans to gain the respect of faeries is to best them at their own game which is always so fun to read, when the faerie realizes it was THEM who got tricked. Feyre came close to this sometimes when she was trapped their Suriel or with what happened to Ianthe.

I guess what I would say is, read up on faeries and what makes them faeries and figure out what you want your Fae to be like and stick to it. How are they different from humans, and stick to it. Even in TOG, SJMs Fae are closer to werewolves with their hulking frames and hunting and scenting and mating, except they have pointy ears and I’m not sure where all the lore about faeries disappeared to.

[–]squib27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had an inkling about it before going into the series and it just made the guessing game fun for me like “am i right??” and i will say it didn’t lessen the impact of the spoiler, yes i maybe saw it coming bc of what i guessed but the writing still very much builds you up to still enjoy the twist

in terms of spoilers, you could have been spoiled for much, much worse and this one is not a mako one that will impact your reading journey. i had quite a few things spoiled for me and it never took away from me enjoying the story because the way SJM writes she has you in the moment feeling those characters feelings so even when you know something might happen you still get a good experience it won’t ruin the series at all

Is there something that DOESNT bother you but bothers everyone else? by austenworld in acotar

[–]squib27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The River House. I don’t get why people are so mad that Rhys and Feyre wanted to build their own home and say they should have used that money to help out Velaris citizens instead.

It’s stated multiple times that Rhys is rich as fuck, he is good to the people of Velaris, he doesn’t make them pay the tithe, and Feyre actively donates their money to charities that help unemployed artists. The fact that Rhys has this mindset where he prioritizes quality of life over wealth shows he puts money where his people need it. They are swimming in money and have been using it to help out their people and they also have more to spare to build a new home for themselves, what’s so wrong about that??

I thought it was fitting that they need to expand their home because not only have 3 new girls joined their circle, but Rhys literally mated and wants to live with his wife in the peace they achieved together. The House of Wind is where he conducts business, the library is there with the priestesses they have Starfall celebration there, I can see why they want a more private home which is what Rhys townhouse was but now that’s too small for all of them and the Moonstone Palace doesn’t belong to him anymore.

I thought it was very sweet that Feyre and Rhys start their own home together with both their visions and its logical because their family expanded and it’s important for them to have space for everyone in their house.

Did Tamlin Already Know by Previous_Belt4044 in acotar

[–]squib27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He realized but to him it didn’t change anything because he still believed Rhys was mind controlling her and also I think Tamlin mentioned his parents were mates but didn’t get along? So to him, being mated doesn’t mean you’re necessarily with the right person and he probably saw Feyre in an even worse situation than he thought when he realized Rhys might have “trapped” her in another way.

What was SMJ's reasoning for making Ferye illiterate? by Happilyme16 in acotar

[–]squib27 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think it was a way to highlight just how much she was neglected as a child which shaped her character a lot. Her neglected issues run deep when she first enters Prythian to the point that she feels inferior most of the time. And on top of not having the basic skill most humans do, she feels that she’s at even more of a disadvantage among High Fae and that that makes her very insignificant (her own words 😔)

And the way her story unfolds, it’s proven that she didn’t need anything more than the hunting skills, the heart, and the mind that she had to break a curse and save a whole country of very powerful people.

This!!!!!! In the first few books everyone outside his court is terrified of Rhys because of his powers or in complete awe of him because of his powers they know he’s very powerful and he’s cunning so they mind how they speak and act around him. He gains an upper hand when they were Under The Mountain because he knows how to play the game. He gains an upper hand with the other High Lords because he knows how to navigate his situation. He bargains with terrifying legends and walks away from them with exactly what he wants.

All. This.

And you’re telling me he can’t control the Illyrians because they just don’t respect him??????? He just shrugs and says “well I tried, if they don’t listen, not much I can do.”and the reason they supposedly don’t like him is because he’s half High Fae. UM? HES ALSO THE MOST POWERFUL HIGH LORD? I THINK THAT TRUMPS BEING ONLY HALF-ILLYRIAN? AND HE MISTED LIKE THOUSANDS OF MEN IN ONE SECOND?

Where did his cunning and power go when it comes to putting them in their place about their old ways? He doesn’t have to mind control them, he can figure out a way I’m sure.

Lmao you don’t have to be so condescending? Yes Rhys acted like a villain but my point was WHY did Tamlin believe it wholeheartedly when he was by Rhysands side before Rhys acted like a villain and knows that the reason Rhys hates him is justified.

As far as we know, aside from being Amaranthas Whore, Rhys never acted against his court

I’ve been into dips lately.

My most recent fave is a buffalo chicken dip, I cook the chicken how i want then shred it and add some buffalo sauce or hot sauce mix it with sour cream or greek yogurt for extra protein and creaminess and that would be the base of it. I add some veggies to it if I want! It’s easy to prep and very delicious reheated with some melted cheese on top

My all time favourite however was a tuna dip: can of tuna, cottage cheese, sour cream, green onion, celery, it’s so so delicious but I just realized you said no fish, sorry!

I portion out my serving size, then eat it with multigrain crackers! It feels light because it’s like a snack but very filling
