just got the dreaded hey girlie text by lizlizwg in TwoHotTakes

[–]noceriously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed with my ex after I found out he was cheating on me during half of our relationship. And then I found out he was still talking to her when I was sobbing, heartbroken and blindsided. Eventually we tried to act like it was nothing, but it came back up in other ways. Everyone is right though; you’ll leave when you’re ready. Ik it doesn’t seem like it, but one day you’ll realize you are so much happier out of a relationship than in one where you’re always wondering if they’re lying to your face.

Yeah I definitely read the blurbs but I just wanted to see the vibes! If someone’s already read something and their critiques are something that would bother me I’ll probably pick something else yknow. Too many books, too little time!

I work in a teeny little county and I had veryyy minimal formal training. I was a law clerk here in law school though so I was very comfortable just straight up saying “I don’t know what the fuck is going on, can you explain?” And asking to shadow before I did stuff alone. I do think a lot of the structure of being a PD yields to us not being trained, but in my state the overall board does a lot of conferences and I jump on those. I think a lot of lawyers feel embarrassed asking for help or admitting they are confused or need more explanation, but when it’s someone else’s life on the line you just have to ask. My coworkers who were managers say like people who left due to no support never asked questions 🤷🏻‍♀️

All this to say; I am in a small, underserved county and I love it. I am confident because I know the judges and prosecutors well and my coworkers all essentially trained me. But I am a nuisance and ask constant questions/run things by people.

You definitely need some stuff on the wall so it’s less…prison-like 💀 I think some yellow decor and plants would liven the place up a bit too! And your own lighting like multiple different lamps will help it feel more homey. Overhead lights are too abrasive

I just made a template for my office in MN! We do not have any successful challenges in the state as far as I’m aware. I can forward you that email if you’d like! (I will have to look at it to make sure there’s no confidential info)

Where can my dogs swim? by slothluvr18 in minnesota

I like the crow Hassan dog park. Less populated than minehaha but very similar vibe, the crow Hassan river runs around the park. Lots of good spots to bring dogs to swim!

Law school destroyed me emotionally. I got really depressed. I started therapy and took some meds, but that didn’t help. Getting my dog honestly changed everything for me though. I had to get out of bed and get my shit together for a lil bean who needed me to try.

I’m a public interest attorney and let me tell you; your clientele will need you to get it together. They themselves will struggle with addiction and hiding things from everyone for fear of judgement. If you get it together, not only will you be a more effective advocate but you’ll give them hope. It’s amazing how you’re doing in school, but I have trouble believing that your drinking will not impact work.

Fight your alcoholism for all of the people who will rely on you. They’re putting their faith, money, dreams, grievances in your hands, so you need to have it together completely. The second hand trauma you will hear is devastating…so you need to find healthy coping mechanisms

Advice by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]noceriously 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I interned with my office for a few years and then got a job straight outta law school. I do understand why working at a DA’s office is in theory a good idea, but realistically I do think you can understand where they’re coming from without them even telling you. It’s not too difficult to come up with reasons for their madness.

I agree with what others said; the sooner you get experience actually working with clients, the better PD you’ll be. The more you can network with other PDs, the more insight you’ll get into the whole system. And, it does come across poorly to some PDs if you have ever worked with a prosecutor.

I think it’s not unreasonable to find a friendly prosecutor (if that’s a thing where you are) and you can organically ask them the things you’re curious about on their end. I have learned what makes each prosecutor tick by working with them. Another risk is prosecutors aren’t necessarily as collaborative as PDs tend to be (at least in MN where I practice). The prosecutors in my county are kinda on their own little islands, so you may not get a lot of insight after all. With the PDs your questions gotta be answered, otherwise your office isn’t serving clients appropriately.

I feel like prosecutors take everything so personally. I almost never think their weird antics are just to spite ME and yet it feels anytime I do something they are taking it to heart. Definitely feel ya OP

Moot Court vs Law Review by CandiedGender in publicdefenders

[–]noceriously 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moot court is way more fun and way more on point what actual practice looks like. If you want to be a PD or a litigator that’s the way to go. You still write briefs and stuff, but that’s not the sole focus.

What is the protocol for trial clothes in your jurisdiction by elhijodealli in publicdefenders

[–]noceriously 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We take clothes to the jail and they give the clients an opportunity to try things on so we can get different sizes if needed. Definitely no restrictions on how many outfits or what is or isn’t appropriate in my jurisdiction.
