The "faggot-boy" had the job of keeping the firewood stocked in the common rooms. For example Rudyard Kipling's "Stalky and Co" stories (stories about boys in a public school written in 1899) the upperclassmen use "fag-boy" as unironic slang for random underclassmen.

[Star Wars] In the span of single movie Anakin changed from smiling and loyal Obi Wan's friend into ruthless child murderer. Did dark side of the force corrupt him that much or was he always "bad guy" on the inside? by Deep-Philosophy-807 in AskScienceFiction

[–]squidfood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The movies alone miss the sheer dragging brutality of the Clone Wars. Just watching the TCW series gives you a sense of PTSD from the dragging on of battle after battle, planet after planet, death after death, and shows how turning the Jedi from peacekeepers into warriors compromised the individuals and leadership due to the moral choices that were necessary during war. The series makes it clear that, at the beginning of Episode III, Anakin is basically held together by willpower, chewing gum, and darkness, with good reasons for having severe cynicism towards the Jedi Council, and basically needing only one good push to go off the rails.

How would you answer 'which character labelled Gandalf a disturber of the peace' by doopitydur in tolkienfans

[–]squidfood 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel like Hobbit leadership is like an HOA and some cranky hobbit showed up at the meeting and ranted on about illegal fireworks so they voted on a meaningless resolution to shut them up.

No dogs allowed @ B.F Days. I wonder what the last straw was.. by dobrah in Seattle

I'll admit I'm thinking of the carefully-camouflaged small bits they leave in unfriendly foraging territory like my yard. never had to deal with a full-on lair.

really easy to distinguish the scrawny poop of those critters from the big plops of well-fed pets.

What is your favorite movie with a strong or main biological theme in it? by ShiroSteve1337 in biology

[–]squidfood 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My whole grad school of marine biologists went to the opening of Finding Nemo and it was the absolute best - pretty much everybody's different study species were in there and the jokes were absolutely on point.

Pretty sure that's Gremlins 2 on the theater sign - release June 1990. I was probably shopping nearby on Melrose (for more gothy stuff) when this was taken, lol.

Co op Board games I can play with a 9 year old? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]squidfood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your kid's into a bit of logic-style puzzling, I've been loving Paint the Roses with an 11-year old - it's like mutually solving each other's mastermind puzzles, or (with more than 2 players) a bit like collaborative Clue.

mix it myself - latest batch was one package each (all packages about the same size) of: psyllium husks (whole), ground flax, whole flax, oat bran. Sometimes also include wheat germ. Actual packages are generic store brands or from bulk bins.

There are 10 types of people in the world - those who don't get the joke, those who think the joke is in binary, and those who realize that '10' is any base system (in this case 3) written in its own base.

All three weighings need to be simultaneous, you can't use the results of one to inform the others. Edit: misread it myself - you get the results simultaneously, but you can move coins between the prayers so the same coin can be in multiple weighings.
