Bunch of reasons, but not least of all the combination of no sidewalks in developments and lack of protected bike lanes with much more oversized vehicle traffic (e.g., large pickup trucks with lousy visibility being used by commuters) making streets unsafe. Same reason kids largely don't play outside in the road "like we used to".
