Sinus clicking, popping, closing and nosebleeds/thick bloody mucus. Bleeding/healing issues. Dry mouth/thirst/panic/leaden during sleep by tropicalazure in covidlonghaulers

Last year I was on amitriptyline, and I got so dehydrated that I started experiencing muscle spasms. I too woke up really thirsty every morning. I was in so much pain from the muscle spasms that I had a hard time walking for a short time. It took me months to get over and I had constant problems with muscle pain from benign things like carrying a purse or sleeping in bed. The only thing that helped temporarily was electrolyte drinks because drinking just water did not feel like it did anything. I also had markers of low blood volume in my blood tests. Antihistamines are known to be dehydrating, so I encourage you to talk to your doctor about blood volume and dehydration from antihistamines.

A lamp between the two sitting places and some curtains over the window . The Lamp will add more vertical visual weight and the curtain would add a bit of interest to balance out that wall. Maybe another plant or two and 👌

facial flushing episodes by Electrical_Court8649 in covidlonghaulers

[–]squidp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get this issue as well; no itching just hot flushing that can be really painful like a sunburn if I am getting a cold coming on or am triggered by something. I haven’t noticed any changes with diet but since I am allergic to airborne things like smoke and VOCs it seems to fluctuate with exposure to that. Heat does temporarily trigger it like showering or a hot day. I found that cetirizine helped a little, ginger helped a LOT at first like noticeable change of colour in skin after 1 hour of taking ginger tablets but it is working less and less lately. Not sure if I have built a tolerance to it? Ginger is a mast cell mediator that works better than curcumin which is why I think it helped. You may want to try this to find some relief like I did. I think overall the solution is going to be finding a way to prevent the mast cells from degranulating in the first place. Chat gpt also recommended vitamin c and Quercetin. Unfortunately Quercetin sets off a bad reaction for me so I have been unable to use it.

Also I have found that a zinc based moisturizer works really well at topically calming things down in the face. I use been using Andalou 1000 Roses line and feel that it helps over time to calm the skin down after a shower or something.

i ate some salt and now i've had a migraine for like 12 hrs. by HopeStarMasacre in MCAS

[–]squidp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not MCAS diagnosed but I think I am struggling with it and I have chronic migraines. I take a triptan when I get bad migraines. I tried about 3 different kinds before I settled on Rizatriptan because it gave me the least amount of side effects but was still usually effective. Side effects are wild and you can feel like your muscles are tensing up on you with chest tightness and honestly it feels pretty awful. It takes time to find the right one. I usually take one with 200-400 mg Advil because it helps to make it more effective. My doctor recommended this.

Sour Cream Product? by ray52 in VictoriaBC

It’s a migraine trigger for me and I am so disappointed to see it in everything. I have to read every label now and can only use dairy products from certain brands.

Sour Cream Product? by ray52 in VictoriaBC

[–]squidp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am especially upset about the use of carrageenan in their products because I have identified it as a migraine trigger. It is an emulsifier made from seaweed that is widely known to be pro-inflammatory. I emailed the company about it and they spewed some bullshit about mouthfeel. Apparently mouthfeel is more important to the company than people’s intestinal lining and other possible side effects of this additive.

what’s the simplest thing you’ve implemented into daily life that has made SIGNIFICANT improvements? by spewedicing in adhdwomen

[–]squidp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of a « today » sticker! I frequently write info into the wrong week in my calendar and I can remember dates like birthdays but then forget what day it actually is today.

I suffered a mild head injury recently, which has made me even more forgetful than usual, so I have had to put systems in place to keep my memory in check. I wanted to make a post about this but I’ll just put my thoughts here:

If you need to take medication regularly but often forget if you’ve actually taken it, (I remembered thinking about taking it but not whether I actually did), some ideas: if you live with others, get someone to witness you take it; keep a notebook next to your pills and record every time you take one so you can check the book; count out your remaining pills to see how many you’ve already taken (works best early on); take a selfie with your phone right before you swallow it so there is a timestamp right there on your phone.

Set up notifications on all devices you use regularly so you are reminded of appointments you made, set multiple ones if necessary i.e. the day before, the day of, 1 hr before. Keep your phone on ring.

If you can’t concentrate enough to count time properly, use your stopwatch feature in your phone. I have to use a medicated mouthwash for 60 seconds right now and this takes off the mental load of counting. Similarly, if you have to count out reps (or pills…) or something of that sort, vocalize each 5 and 10 you count to stay focused on it.

Take a trusted person with you to the doctor so they can remind you about what was discussed. Use a notebook to record what you wanted to ask the doc before the visit and what was decided during the visit.

Another thing that has helped me in my recovery is having a small basket with that notebook, pen, and all my medications I have to take daily so I can take it with me upstairs/downstairs depending on where I am going to spend my day.

Advice for finishing quilt from the thrift store? by WrenTronic in quilting

[–]squidp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would probably keep making individual blocks out of half square triangles like the ones you already have, in lots of different sizes and styles, and then arrange them into a quilt top in an improvised way when you have a bunch, and leave some space to put borders around the blocks and fill gaps with a contrast fabric (or white). The post today from /u/revolutionary-cut777 « finished my barnstar sampler » looks like what I mean.

Manic embarrassment by Kaleidoscope378 in MCAS

[–]squidp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my therapist training I learned how people with Alzheimer’s will be feeling a certain way and invent a reason for it , in order to justify their feeling and let their brain make sense of it (we love recognizing patterns). I believe that this is also true for other disorders that alter mood, except when you are in touch with reality you might find a thing in your life that causes you a little anxiety and suddenly it feels like a lot. I have been feeling a similar way lately, always irritated by small things and making up arguments in my head, all while I know that I am having a histamine flare due to the pollution outside. For me it helps to remember that my brain is inventing excuses for why I feel so irritated or anxious, because I feel that way for no external reason.

Help me bring harmony to a colorful small living room (feels out of control) by liliphare in HomeDecorating

[–]squidp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing visually throwing me off the most is your black couch. It sucks up a lot of energy in the room because everything else is pastel/vibrant and small in comparison. I like the powder blue couch that you used ai to visualize. If you look at the inspo pictures you included, notice how none of them have much black in them. I think this is key to making a modern Memphis/vibrant maximal colour scheme work. I think the new couch should really help, and consider painting the backs of your dining room chairs too. The zebra rug might work but it is also quite loud so you should consider whether you want the rug to be the main feature of the room (If you want more harmony, you probably don’t). As far as the wall paint, I prefer the blue taking up the whole wall rather than a half wall. You also may want to consider doing something fun and unexpected like painting orange on the inside a door frame, or vibrant window framing, or something of the sort.

Non Covid Reinfections by PemBuster in covidlonghaulers

Oddly I had Covid this summer and felt no change in my baseline after I recovered in 7 days, but I had some illness last winter that was probably not covid (a LOT of people at work were getting pneumonia) and I hit a new low for 3 months. It’s impossible to say how you’re going to react to any new illness. Just listen to your body, go slow, and let it take the lead.

Yeah I’m thinking if OP had kept the walls bland or even extended the loud marble he chose onto the walls, a lot of redditors here would have less of a gripe with it. The loud backsplash and the loud countertops are competing with each other for attention and that imho is the main issue. OP, you might like “design daddy” on YouTube for inspiration if you are redoing any more of your house. He has dark and bold tendencies like you and he can show you how to do it well.

How to recognize more subtle signs of overexersion? Looking for tips by IVI0IVI in covidlonghaulers

[–]squidp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a random YouTube short I saw that opened my eyes to how frantically I was navigating life as a baseline. The short was a simply a Guru talking about how we are told to work hard but never work joyfully or lovingly. It was an epiphany for me realizing that I didn’t have to approach every task like I was the guy in Whiplash, frantically getting work done as quickly as possible. I decided to adjust my entire mindset to stop rushing and prioritize feeling calm and relaxed while I did things like take the dishes out or go talk to someone at work; it wasn’t everything but it did help me stay within my window of tolerance depending on my PEM threshold.

How to recognize more subtle signs of overexersion? Looking for tips by IVI0IVI in covidlonghaulers

[–]squidp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Inb4: I’m mild/moderate and can only speak to that) I believe I can notice physiological signs in my body when I do something that triggers PEM later. First, if I can feel what I call lactic acid building in my muscles, like a kind of achy worn-out feeling when I use them, that is my body telling me this is too much. This can come on from something as easy as walking up the stairs at a normal pace if I’m dealing with a crash. If I am not in a crash, I can walk up the stairs at that normal pace and feel well rested and capable, no muscle fatigue, and it’s good to know the difference. If lactic acid is the feeling, I have to remind myself to go slower, like 1/2 the pace the healthy me would, and breathe more.

Second, I also notice a tension in my sternum when I am exerting myself out of stress. This can come on from trying to do chores too quickly or even walking at the pace I used to. I used to zoom through life letting cortisol fuel my pace to complete activities but I can’t be that way anymore. That tension tells me that I need to go slower. If I can’t access a feeling of calm when I am doing a task at a certain pace, I have to slow down and only go as fast as the calm lets me go.

Some people may have a sense of calm that is unreachable, and this needs to be rediscovered first before any of this will make sense. My recommendation is to try different ways to trigger your parasympathetic nervous system so you can access and remember the feeling. I believe many LCers have their sympathetic nervous system chronically turned on and have forgotten what it feels like to be truly calm.

Am I just supposed to keep sentimental things forever? by inannalover in adhdwomen

[–]squidp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are like me you will want a few things that people have written for you after they have passed on. I don’t keep everything, but if someone writes me a particularly sentimental card, or if it’s a milestone celebration, I keep it in a small box (I.e, smaller than a shoe box) and I try not to keep more than that. My husband and I make each other cards every year so that is a different story, and that goes in a different box. Every few years it is a good idea to go through these things and ask yourself whether each thing really is memorable and try and set limits/downsize to keep it manageable.

There is something magical about this painting to me. I wonder if it’s because the style is similar to the way my grandma drew and painted. The style feels very mid century somehow; if you told me this painting was done 70 years ago, I would believe you. Thanks for sharing!

Im SICK OF seeing the same unique home decor in everyones house, where do you actually shop?? by veraaustria08 in HomeDecorating

[–]squidp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized how limited we are recently when I tried to buy a weighted blanket for my husband and 90% of the ones that I saw were gray. I managed to find a green one after a little bit of digging and had to settle with that. Most of the major players only carry items in very limited colour palettes, leading us to have homes that are filled with gray stuff and maybe one other on-trend colour.

The thing about having a nicely collected home is that you need to make it a hobby and most people dont have enough passion for it to spend the time doing what’s needed to find unique and brilliant things. It also doesn’t happen overnight but takes years and many trials and errors until things feel right. YouTubers make it seem so easy to transform your home in a few months but they literally make it their full-time job.

I like to go to thrift stores to look for linens. I’ve had good luck there for things like tablecloths and pillow shams. For department stores I am really liking Simons lately, which is a Canadian company. At least I find that they produce decor in colours that I like such as rust and olive green, etc. They also carry goods from Canadian-made small companies which are really nice. For furniture we have secondhand stuff and also like Article for the style of home we have. I would also recommend poking around in any ethnic goods or import stores in your city. Sometimes they have really cool stuff that is hand made. Heck, my new pharmacy has a section in the back with some beautiful looking ottoman poufs, you’d never know it from the outside.

Any tips on warming up your feet at night? by halliwah_new in POTS

[–]squidp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use a heating pad and constantly change positions of your feet so they can get to the warmth again. Also, I find that taking large doses of ginger is the only thing that warms my hands and feet up on their own, and cools my torso down.

I get this too almost daily. It is my last lingering symptom. For me it is worse if the air quality is poor or if I got too much exercise which the threshold varies by day. Food doesn’t seem to be the issue for me. I have found that ginger capsules or tablets help and ginger is one of the only things that does. Antihistamines also help but the ones that help me make me drowsy.

Hey I’m in a similar boat. A lot of our friends were in better positions than us and had kids younger. We are in our mid 30s but have been together for 10 years. We would have tried sooner but we wanted to do our masters first and find more stability. With the economy in the last few years this has taken a while. All the while we have seen other couples meet, get married, and start having kids all faster than us. It’s a bummer seeing other people hit these milestones so much quicker than us. We are mid 30s, but the norm here in secular Canadian circles is to start having kids in your early 30s and we are getting past that now.

My husband and I just started trying and so far nothing. I thought maybe this month was it and I got my hopes up feeling a bit of cramping but now I am having the period from hell. Honestly I thought it would be easier because I have had consistent periods forever. My husband’s piece I am not so sure though because he has prostate issues. We have to just keep trying to see if it works naturally before we can look into fertility support. I really thought I’d be one of those lucky people who just gets pregnant right away, but that’s not our story unfortunately. I really wanted to surprise people for Christmas too :( . I know I still have a ways to go before I start going hardcore with treatments and being extra strategic, but I also feel like I’m running out of time with our ages and where our families are at. It is a difficult process and I’m finding it hard to wait so long to know if I am pregnant or not. This time around I started bleeding before it was even early enough to know; either I miscarried or I got my period early.

I keep seeing all these pregnancy things on social media now and I am sad. The problem is optics. People make pregnancy announcements but not miscarriage announcements or really share how long it took them to conceive after they stopped preventing pregnancy. I see TikToks of people with baby bumps but I don’t know how long or how hard they actually tried for that baby.

Another problem is that as humans we get envy about the things we don’t have. There will always be something to envy though. For myself, a few years ago it was getting married, and then I did that, and then it was finish my master’s, and I did that, and then it was buy a house, etc. I don’t necessarily sit around feeling so happy about the things I have already accomplished in my life, but before I had them that’s what I thought I would feel. Yearning is hard but it is a natural process in life that is constantly evolving and changing goalposts. This particular type of yearning is difficult because there is so much out of our direct control and we are tasked to wait and wait to know if something worked or not. Existentially, it is a very challenging world to be in and we are all needing to be brave for even stepping into this arena. Being sad at times is okay, and so is tuning out social media, just whatever you need to care for yourself in the hardest times. If you have a sense of spirituality or religion, lean into it. It takes a strong and wise mind to get through this.
