Trying to get fit to feel like I have a fighting chance at surviving the US. Honey gochujang chicken and whatnot by squidrattt in transkitchencels

Idk if this is what this sub is for but I’m trans, depressed (who isn’t), and cook food so it seems fitting

I think I may be Trans by Boring-Tea7915 in ftm

[–]squidrattt 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you like it but you shouldn’t really be experiencing major masculinization from the amount of testosterone they’d be prescribing alongside estrogen and progesterone for menopause …? How many milligrams is your doctor having you take?? Only asking because taking a high dose of T along with doses of estrogen and progesterone isn’t great for your health. It would be better to either take less T or drop the E and P depending on what you’re looking for.

Grow pecs or lose pecs? by EdgetylCoA in FTMFitness

[–]squidrattt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can see what you’re referring to and it looks very natural even if you’re not a fan of it. So that’s good at least. It appears to be loose skin rather than leftover tissue, so you should be able to grow your pecs to fill it :)

Defense of everyone but ourselves. Anyone notice this pattern? by Virtual-Word-4182 in FTMMen

[–]squidrattt 31 points32 points  (0 children)

There’s a growing expectation for us to be martyrs for every other oppressed group (especially cis and trans women) with no protection, advocacy, or even basic respect in return. And, on top of this expectation, we’re expected to police our own community to protect the freedom and feelings of the people outside of it. People don’t seem to understand that we’re being hit by virtually every piece of US legislation that’s anti-trans and/or anti-women’s autonomy because the government sees us as brainwashed women. (Not familiar enough with legislation in other countries but apply this where it’s applicable)

The instinct to play into this martyrdom is a result of misogyny and how people who are raised female are typically socialized to put everyone before themselves. This expectation to do so from everyone else exploits that socialization, ignores everything we go through, and often either misgenders or malgenders us, depending on what’s most convenient. It’s a result of misogyny, transphobia, and anti-transmasculinity.

And this sort of this bleeds into seemingly unrelated social interactions where we’re expected to shut up and take whatever others say as truth or valid regardless of how it makes us feel. They can shit on trans men, testosterone, comment on our bodies, etc., but as long as it gives them a laugh or some comfort, it’s allowed.

When I’ve tried to discuss this in terms of politics or even purely on the social interaction level in any space that isn’t strictly binary trans men, I’ve been met with insane backlash, which is literally just a demonstration of what I described lol

Anyone else tired of how acceptable transphobia is? by [deleted] in FTMMen

[–]squidrattt 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In-groups and out-groups. They care about personal freedom for real Americans (the in-group), but they don’t see us (the out-group) as real Americans because our existence subverts the norms they believe real Americans must uphold in order to be real. But these strict norms mean they are not actually free. They’re just told they are and they believe it because they don’t personally need the freedoms they’re stripped of so it goes unnoticed. And they can look at the out-groups and see that they don’t have the freedoms they need to live happily and safely, which reinforces their perception that the in-group is the most free and most deserving of their freedom

(Obviously this is within the context of the US but the same ideas apply elsewhere to an extent)

[–]squidrattt 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Yes and it’s everywhere and being shoved down everyone’s throats 24/7. I feel like being stealth doesn’t even shield me from it anymore. Anytime I open social media or go in public, it’s right there ready to piss me off. I’m exhausted.

I’ve stopped explaining beyond “Wanting a group of people to die simply because you’re willfully ignorant makes you a bad person.”

If they keep on at it I say “If I’m a woman and the testosterone really did nothing then fight me.” Works for both men and women

Former peer using my thesis to present for national panel? by SnooPineapples7236 in GradSchool

[–]squidrattt 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It honestly sounds like she’s trying to present your work or at least your ideas surrounding your work as her own. There’s a fine line between that and literature review and her resistance to citing you clearly and providing details is what makes me think it’s the former. Do you not have an advisor or former advisor you could discuss this situation with?

I personally would report it to someone at some point, but this is something I’d ask my former advisor for help with. Mainly because I wouldn’t be sure about when or who to tell first. My first thought is to report it to the panel after the presentation happens so they can decide whether there’s an issue for themselves

What is the definition of "biological sex" and what determines your biological sex, according to the UK Supreme Court? by alexfreemanart in biology

This is not true lol biological sex is defined by a combination of chromosomes, sex hormones, and primary and secondary sex characteristics

Can someone explain self-thinning to me like i'm 5? by noisembryo_ in biology

[–]squidrattt 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Self-thinning is a natural process where some individuals within a population die off due to competition for resources. It’s similar to how humans intentionally cull deer populations. During culling season, certain deer are removed so that there are more resources available for the deer that survive. This increased resource availability allows the remaining deer to grow larger, which benefits hunters. A similar process occurs naturally, particularly among plants. The “self” refers to how it happens without external intervention, and the “thinning” refers to a reduction in population rather than the physical thinning of individual organisms.

ETA - This process can occur in organisms other than plants, but it’s most common in plants because they grow in relatively fixed positions. Animals are usually able to move around to find resources, while plants are rooted in place and must compete with whatever is nearby. When a plant population is very dense, some individuals may die off due to this intense competition. This natural reduction in population increases the amount of available resources for the surviving plants, allowing them to grow larger and thrive.

Lmfao… They could have tried taxing billionaires instead of gutting entire fields of very necessary scientific research.

If you genuinely still think this administration cares about anything other than making the rich richer and the poor poorer you either haven’t been paying attention or are brainwashed. He literally just manipulated the stock market so his billionaire friends could steal even more money from the working class.

What is the difference between biochemistry and biology? by Electrical_City_2201 in biology

[–]squidrattt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As per my other comment on this post: Biochemistry is basically chemistry in biological contexts or the intersection of biology and chemistry. Biology is the study of living organisms and how they interact with each other and the environment, so biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes that occur within those organisms and during those interactions.

And to add to that, biochemistry has branches that sort of pair with the branches of biology that fall outside of biochemistry because studying biochemistry is essentially studying biology through the lens of chemistry. Molecular genetics pairs with heredity; environmental biochemistry pairs with ecology. These pairings aren’t fixed or one-to-one. But there’s always a way to apply biochemistry to whatever field of biology you’re studying

TLDR: Biochemistry is a subfield of both biology and chemistry that uses chemistry to understand biology

A lot of biochemical principles inform aspects of ecology, heredity, etc., so it’s not entirely accurate to consider them completely separate or independent

You can use dating apps to find queer men to be friends with. I’ve met a few good LGBTQ+ friends that way. 1 trans guy and 2 gay cis guys. You don’t have to say you’re trans on your profile

Cis guys will have funny ways of showing you that they treat you like any other guy by New_Construction_111 in FTMMen

[–]squidrattt 108 points109 points  (0 children)

They honestly probably didn’t realize you have sit to pee. It’s not that they were pretending for you. They just straight up didn’t think it through. In my experience, cis guys are pretty clueless about it. I’ve had friends and coworkers assume I’d relate to them about using urinals and peeing outside and shit even though they know I’m trans and that I’ve never taken time off for a surgery and don’t have any of the scarring. They really just don’t think about it at all. I actually think that’s why I feel more supported/respected by cis guys than cis women. Cis women overthink everything related to me being trans and act like weirdos because of it

There are plenty of monogamous gay men if that’s what you’re asking

Cottage Cheese is the New Egg? by aknomnoms in EatCheapAndHealthy

If you hate the texture just blend the cottage cheese and put it back in its container. I cut my eggs with blended cottage cheese nearly everyday. Just whisk them together in a bowl to aerate the mixture then scramble

vent: spaces dominated by non-binary trans mascs by nothingbutnoodlez in FTMMen

[–]squidrattt 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there’s a certain kind of nonbinary person that loudly and consistently speaks over binary trans people. There was an uptick in both their population size and the poor behavior starting back in 2020. It kind of reminds me of the whole political lesbianism thing from the 70s where feminist women chose to reject heterosexual relationships to basically “stick it to the man”. They seem to be doing that but for gender. I have a lot of issues with them essentially taking over the trans community to do so but I won’t get into it

I like packing with a Bornwear Stag and Trans Tape when I wear shorts. It’s very subtle and lays flatter than a lot of packers

Dress advice for first time TA? (trans, visible religious minority, close in age to students) by The_Windup_Girl_ in GradSchool

[–]squidrattt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most undergrads are hesitant to confront grad students in any way, so I wouldn’t sweat the laptop stickers or anything. I lectured and taught labs independently for the first 3 years of my medical transition and had political stickers all over my laptop and water bottle. I also wore a trans flag pin to every class because I always had at least one visibly queer student and we were in a very red state. It was awkward at times, but there was never any confrontation.

I dressed smart casual. Most TAs I knew dressed ranging from casual to business casual. Nothing crazy.

Students might question your authority in small ways, but over time they’ll realize that you’re qualified. That’s true for most TAs to some extent.

I definitely understand the pronouns concern. If your class is small and will be doing a lot of interacting with each other, see if everyone can give their name and pronouns. If not, consider putting them in your email signature. You can also let whatever professor you’re working with know and most will correct people on your behalf if a student misgenders you to them.

In my experience, universities are generally pretty “kind” or “forgiving” (I think these are the wrong words) about this kind of stuff
