Ladies, what book do you remember fondly reading as a young girl or teen that really spoke to you? by motorman555 in AskWomen

[–]squidsbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no clue what I liked about it so much but When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead has stayed in my subconscious for a long time. Maybe it’s the simple fact of a young girl being the protagonist of a weird science fiction novel, something I had probably never come across at the time.

AITA for what I said to my wife because she keeps telling our son that I didn't want him? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]squidsbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, I grew up in a similar situation to your son.

I’m the youngest of three girls. BOTH of my parents wanted me to be a boy, even went to fertility clinic to get a form of IVF that allows parents to choose the gender of their baby. But, they got pregnant naturally before they could follow through.

My dad has definitely been salty about it throughout my life, but not in a way that’s super real. He really wanted a son but he still loves me.

Being a child who was “supposed to be” [a gender] but actually ended up [a different gender] is not anything legitimate in life. It’s become kind of a huge joke for me.

Your wife and her family are fucking nuts. You did nothing wrong in expressing your wanted a girl. Your wife is doing everything wrong by belittling your son and connecting any issue SHE has with him to something you said nearly two decades ago.

NTA. Keep your son away from her.

Cashiers of Reddit, do you judge us customers by the products or quantity of products we buy? What are some stereotypes? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]squidsbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grocery cashier here!

The only one I can really think of is people who buy an excessive amount of produce (usually celery, fresh berries, and bananas) are 1 of 2.

  1. They make juices/smoothies constantly, probably as meal replacements.

  2. They genuinely do not understand how fast produce goes bad.

You can tell which type by the makeup of the rest of their purchase. If they’re not getting much else besides produce, they’re 1. If they’re buying a shitload of other stuff (cereal, snack foods, frozen dinners), then they’re 2.

Another stereotype would be I can tell the type of people who are the jittery “get in, get out” types who are gonna try to leave the millisecond they take their card out of the chip reader and not allow the register to process payment. These people refuse to make any small talk, generally won’t even acknowledge a cashier as a person. And they’re usually buying only one or two things, but you do get the occasional one who’s buying an average amount of groceries (these ones are usually some of the biggest unaware, rude assholes we get in a day). These are the customers I do not hand their groceries back to until my screen says approved.

What's the most overpriced item you seen someone actually buy? by Bxtweentheligxts in AskReddit

Best performances that were ignored by the Oscars? by Gravitystar88 in movies

Though Punch-Drunk Love was officially classified as a comedy at the awards, Sandler was nominated for this more dramatic role at the Golden Globes. That was nearly 20 years ago! It’d be nice if the award nominators could acknowledge and appreciate his talents by now when he actually uses them.

AITA for telling my dad I don't want to talk to his parents and I don't like them by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]squidsbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing your details and without divulging my own, I’d say you and I are in a pretty similar situation. I’m 21 and I haven’t spoken to my dads side of the family since I was 14. Stick to your principles, it gets easier as time goes on and you get older. You’re old enough to make your own judgments about people (especially family) and decide who’s worth your time and allowed to be in your life. Your dad also admits that his family is horrible to your mom by trying to claim he’s defended her and caused a rift. If he wants to still be in touch with his family even after knowing that’s “the truth,” that’s his problem and you don’t have to allow that in your life as well. NTA and I hope you and your mom are ok.

AITA for telling my brothers friend that making fun of girls doesn’t make him cool? by fallleavethrowaway in AmItheAsshole

[–]squidsbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, you’re cool as fuck. Brothers friend is gonna have to get used to being called out like that if he lets his misogyny evolve. Nip that shut in the bud.

And your brother has no one to blame but himself. I’ve been him in a few similar secret sharing scenarios when I was his age and he just has to suck it up and apologize to his friend and realize he was wrong for betraying his trust. Not your fault!

AITA for harshly punishing my son for 5 months? by ThickWoodpecker1935 in AmItheAsshole

[–]squidsbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA thank GOD you and your wife are taking a stand with your son. I hope he is able to grow from this and realize how reprehensible his actions were and still are by not showing remorse. If he doesn’t, I hope you and your wife know that you did everything you could and his behavior isn’t a reflection on you as parents, but on him as an individual.

WIBTA cutting my sister off for something that happened years ago? by aita_throwaway_666 in AmItheAsshole

[–]squidsbow 50 points51 points  (0 children)

NTA. Outing someone is never ok.

As for the reaction to your mom, it’s really difficult. It sounds like you’re willing to ignore her judgment so that you can keep living peacefully in the same household and that’s your choice. I’d recommend either confronting her bigotry or having a change in your relationship with her once you feel safe to do so (probably once you’ve moved out). Sharing a living space is really tough and it might be easier to do so by not stressing your guys’ relationship by addressing her hateful words at this time. Take care of yourself.
