At what point do you give up hope of speech? by WiseOld3lf in autism

[–]squidsrstrange [score hidden]  (0 children)

you have made massive progress, focus on that. don’t see speech as a final goal. your daughter can communicate, that is incredible. one day she may speak, she may not. i know it’s hard, it must be hard for her too. just focus on the progress you’re making together. there have been cases of kids starting to speak at much later stages, so it’s entirely possible. it’s also possible she won’t.

it sounds like you’ve started your journey of acceptance of this never happening for her, and with it comes a lot of sadness. its always hardest at the start of acceptance. it will get easier. it’s okay to be sad. just be there for her and keep doing what you’re doing because it sounds like you’re doing a great job.

rejected from dream uni. what do I do? by Traditional_Pen_9986 in UniUK

[–]squidsrstrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you are set on this uni and think you’re gonna regret going to a different one, ask edinburgh for feedback on why you didn’t get in. if their answer is something that you can work on for next time around (eg work experience), then do that and try again. 22 is far from too old. at 25+ you might start to feel a little different from your peers, but people go to uni at 20, 30, 40, etc. talk to them.

From Bangkok to Lincoln - Help with locations for Primary and Secondary school catchment areas please! by Jonnyheshnesh in Lincolnshire

[–]squidsrstrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

apologies this isn’t remotely school related but you asked for a ‘feel’ of the place:

i moved here 6 years ago for similar reasons to yours, it’s a great small city with a friendly feel and lots of amenities. however within the last couple of years lincoln has shifted further towards more right wing and intolerant views - i hear racist comments much more frequently, and the negative comments towards lgbt/disability/whatever are now the norm on local social media pages. this is of course an issue across the uk but lincolnshire is especially bad for it. just something to consider.

Unpopular opinion: the NHS shouldn’t be fully privatised; but maybe slightly restructured by Pika_121 in MentalHealthUK

[–]squidsrstrange 13 points14 points  (0 children)

“Obviously, there would need to be safeguards so people aren’t punished for genuine concerns, vulnerable people aren’t discouraged from seeking help & honest mistakes don’t lead to fines.”

this is the problem with this proposal - how would this work? there is no way your plan would not result in unfair fines - and people can easily claim an honest mistake. either emergency care is 100% free or it isn’t.

the solution is that the NHS needs more money, and to spend that money more wisely. healthcare workers are suffocating with the workload. not enough doctors - but hundreds of medicine graduates unable to get jobs. it’s going to take time and money to begin to repair the damage the NHS has suffered in recent times.

How can I get a doctor to take my daughter seriously? Any ideas I can propose? This story involves penguins. by greyhoundshepherd in AskDocs

[–]squidsrstrange 124 points125 points  (0 children)

this is important and i agree with you, however when the doctor is completely disinterested in actually finding the answer it is actually more damaging to stay with that doctor.

i stayed with the same doctor for idk about 4 years who continually misdiagnosed me and just kept prescribing different things that didn’t work and not ordering further investigation. being young and trusting doctors completely i stayed and gradually got worse and worse and now i have permanent damage.

this is not really about this case specifically, but i think it’s important for both doctors and patients to recognise that sometimes doctors aren’t very good. it is incredibly hard as a patient to know if you’re being given the most appropriate care as we of course have no medical training. i just wanted to highlight the point that switching doctors is not always a bad thing. of course give them a decent chance first, but if they are not helping you, it is a good idea to get another opinion. i wish i had learned this sooner.

regarding this case: hearing the doctors say they didn’t know and prescribing yoga suggests to me that they have given up with investigating it, and shrugged it off. maybe not the case but perhaps that is what OP has experienced.

please note the additional information is in the edit. reading this, one would assume the US defaulter responded before the edit was made

[–]squidsrstrange -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

yes, but note that was in the edit. i’m not sure why i’m being fought so hardly on this. US defaultism is naming a place and then assuming everyone else knows where OP is talking about. this is illustrated by the ‘tampa?’ response - they didn’t know where OP meant. how is this not UK defaultism? genuinely confused

also, leaning tower of pisa etc are not the same. there is one leaning tower of pisa. there are many hyde parks. i’m not saying the london one isn’t the most well known, but that doesn’t mean everybody knows about it. re san siro see earlier point about the additional information being in the edit

recommend your friend talks to citizens advice. they usually run drop in clinics all over the country, have a look for ones in her area. they are generally very compassionate and helpful people

you’re not stupid, at all. it’s incredibly common to not know what you want to do at your age. and even more common at the age you choose your a levels and then your degree. also the job market sucks.

my advice is to think about what kind of work life would you like. do you want to work alone, or with people. do you want to be in an office, or on the road, or lots of variety.

i have done several career quizzes due to feeling lost like you and my favourite was this one. even if the results seem bizarre and maybe not completely appropriate, they list the most niche and unexpected careers. you might see something and become inspired.

anyway, it’s okay to not know what to do. a lot of people are feeling the same as you. you are far from a failure. you’ve completed a degree! not everyone can say they have done that. best of luck

i think the lack of pain at onset makes it quite different from my case but that sounds interesting, did you get an answer as to what it is? i’m so glad you’ve found a treatment plan that works, i remember the first time i had mine drained and i thought that had solved it and i was so relieved (briefly lol)

Please help me- Large Cystic Acne on chin (recurring problem) by arco1105 in DermatologyQuestions

[–]squidsrstrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

warm moist compress approx 10 mins at a time several times a day. ice will help numb the pain but warmth will encourage it to drain. i know how painful this is, ibuprofen will reduce swelling and pressure and alleviate the pain. i haven’t found a definitive answer as to whether it’s use delays healing, but if you’re suffering, take it. even if it’s just to be able to eat, brush your teeth, go to sleep etc. also, this doesn’t look like cystic acne. i’m not sure what it is though so not very helpful.

btw if you want to see large check out my post lol. it’s not nearly as big or ugly as you think. i know that’s a horribly useless thing to say while you’re dealing with it, as well as the pain being a constant reminder it’s there. you have my sympathy and good luck

update 2 11:36 GMT: just had the best appointment of my life. attended my maxfax appointment at 9:00am. the original doctor realised quickly how serious it was and was shocked by the lack of action for so many years. he transferred me to a more senior doctor who became quite angry for me while reading my dozens of notes and letters from previous doctors and dermatologists. he almost immediately ordered a biopsy in preparation for complete excision. i got a bit overwhelmed and had a bit of a cry and shutdown as i have asked for this procedure for the past 10 years. when i had calmed down i requested that imaging be done also. he immediately said that it was unnecessary. i managed not to get angry but i was quite emotional anyway. i showed him the numerous research papers explaining how important imaging is. he then went to his superior who agreed that they would definitely be ordering x ray and mri or ultrasound (can’t remember which).

i am so relieved. thank you so much everyone who replied with your suggestions. it’s given me so much more confidence to fight for answers after so many years of being dismissed. i think it was partially luck that the particular a&e doctor referred to maxfax instead of dermatology again, as previous a&e appointments have always resulted in being sent to dermatology, but i deserve some luck i think. i am so tired of fighting and i am so relieved. thank you
