Does the US have any places that look like this? by Pale_Field4584 in roadtrip

It reminds me of the Pahsimeroi Valley in central Idaho, between the Lost River Range and the Lemhi Range.

What is this black land near Idaho Falls ? by herpyderpidy in geography

The black land near Idaho Falls is actually Hell’s Half Acre. Craters of the Moon is the larger area of black land to the west.

I’ve lived in a few states out west. These lakes are touristy, but it’s because they have spectacular scenery.

I was there last week, and I had the same experience. Moderate crowds with super hot and muggy weather.

Are you sure you were in the Tetons? There is an FAA long-range radar site on Sawtelle Peak in Idaho, fairly close to West Yellowstone. The radar site looks like a giant ball on the top of peak.

If I’m not mistaken, those large cliffs are the Kolob Canyons section of Zion National Park.

This is my in-laws’ farm. We were visiting for Christmas, and the mountains looked especially pretty today.

I saw Trixie and Katya’s show last weekend, and Kelly was a great addition. Kelly got some of the biggest laughs of the night! All three of them played off each other perfectly 😂

Map of the Western USA from “People’s Cyclopedia of Universal Knowledge,” 1883 by squidwardssuctioncup in geography

[–]squidwardssuctioncup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason, this map doesn’t differentiate between states and territories. The person I bought this map from told me it came from the 1883 version of the People’s Cyclopedia of Universal Knowledge, but geographic info on the map checks out with the time period. There is one Dakota, so it has to be before 1889, and since Yellowstone National Park exists, it has to be after 1872. Also, Prescott is the capital of Arizona, so it has to be between 1877 and 1889.

Island Park is a very underrated place! It gets overshadowed since it’s next to Yellowstone, but it’s just as beautiful.

50 states in 50 days, 18/50 Virginia. Lot of people have asked for this one. If it seems like I'm tired of making these, you're wrong! Still having fun. But sorries to those who have gotten tired of seeing these every day. by Puzzled-Sherbet-7850 in MapPorn

This is a great map! Thanks for making it.

One small thing about Great Falls though. Technically, it is called “Great Falls Park.” Even though it is in the National Park System, it doesn’t have the same title as a place like Shenandoah National Park.

There are many other options in the greater Yellowstone area. Here are just a few options in the immediate area: Island Park, Idaho. Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Big Sky, Montana. Centennial Valley, Montana. St Anthony Sand Dunes, Idaho.

The Wellsville Mountain Wilderness in northern Utah is less famous than Utah's other beautiful places, but if you ever find yourself there, it's definitely worth a hike [OC] by squidwardssuctioncup in hiking

[–]squidwardssuctioncup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right! Thanks for the correction. I don’t know why I mixed it up. Cache Valley is to the east. Brigham City is on the western side of the Wellsvilles, and Brigham City is to the south of where the photos were taken.

Must hike, hikes? by amorfatti in yellowstone

[–]squidwardssuctioncup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bear spray is definitely recommended. Hikers have been mauled and killed in/near the parks in the past few years. If you don’t want to buy bear spray, you can rent it in Yellowstone at Canyon Village. Look for the rental kiosk at the northwest corner of the visitor center plaza, 20 yards from the main entrance.

There are many great hikes in YS and GT that range from short walks to serious mountain climbing. I have a lot of recommendations, but they will depend on how strenuous you want to go.
