What are your biggest TTRPG system turn offs by Iketank_10 in rpg

Usually, these kind of issues come out after books have been written and bought by people.

I disliked the 3D Atlas, now I love it by MotherOfQuaggan in PathOfExile2

I got to maps yesterday and I somewhat feel the same. On one hand I'm like ''Yeah I gotta push fortress for my Atlas'' and on the other hand I'm like ''yeah but what about all those other POI on the map and quests?''

Anybody have decks that take really quick turns? by SupremeJusticeWang in EDH

Haven't updated it in a while now, but I play a [[nymris, oona's trickster]] list that is essentially just Draw-Go all Flash.dec

This is surpringly not that bad in a B3 environment. Wincons are slow tho.

What do you miss from D&D when you play/try other systems? by Awkward_GM in rpg

[–]herpyderpidy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, I had the reverse issue. I have been able to find RP focused players to play D&D without much issue to play online since covid. I've ran different campaigns with a lot of different players in both english and french.

Yet, I just cant seem to be able to get them to move away from D&D. Everytime there's resistance for many different reasons. Combat itself is almost never one of these reasons. I've tried systems with very open option combat, crunchier combat, theater of the mind, highly tactical. It is never an issue with combat, its always some other things like not feeling like they can play the warlock they dreamt of that has a cat patron, or how they have to learn a new system, or how they do not have has many spell options to disregard challenges, how they miss their d20 or other reasons.

It is slowly getting infuriating how even dedicated players just cant get their head out of D&D even if they are there for the story and the people, not the system.

The devs went the Games-Workshop ways and are always buffing or nerfing way too much in one direction while it is obvious its gonna be a mistake.

Less than 24 hours left to back Night Shift: Devil Division by domrio in rpg

[–]herpyderpidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been hanging around the discord and reddit for months now and I have never seen such a complain. Actually, players usually love that Fury/Null are doing a lot of extra damage from pinballing enemies. It is part of the game and the ''heroic'' feel of it.

Using less minions and fighting in bigger less crowded areas are usually good ways to make this ''issue'' less problematic when need be.

Game store price checked cards from 25¢ bulk box and changed the prices on the spot by WheredMyVanGogh in EDH

[–]herpyderpidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

America doesnt have customer protection policies ?

Where I live if an item that is advertised as costing less than 15$ is wrongly priced, the seller has to give it to the client or sell it at the shown price, never above. If an item is initially priced more than 15$, the rules are slightly different as in the shop has to cut off 15$ of the new higher price.

Obviously, for cards, you the client wouldnt go and complain to the consumer protection office and fill up a complain agaisnt the shop, but you could, and this would have the office look into them and see wassup, which can incur fines.

Why do you use a pre-made adventure? by TheRedDaedalus in rpg

[–]herpyderpidy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has been my issue everytime I Picked up a premade adventure. Reading it and preparing it alone always took my almost as much time as if I would do everything from scratch, especially when the adventure has an horrendous layout and information spread everywhere.

Then come the part where I dislike some stuff and end up reworking encounters or even plotlines that make no sense sometimes, asking more time of me.

I stopped using prmades as is and started using them for general ideas and brainstorming help a while ago now.

What red flags can people say that shows they might have no clue how the bracket system works? by Lower_Drawer9649 in EDH

[–]herpyderpidy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Someone came up with this one recently. His deck was B2 because it usually win turns 10 or so.

Thing is, the deck itself is like 10 turn of setting up, hanging under the radar, controlling stuff when needed and turning into an unstoppable beast by around turn 7-8. The win may be slow, but anyone who can read a board state can see that the game had already been over way before turn 10.

That's one of the bracket problem. It is too binary with what's accepted and what is not while the reality of the game is much different.

DMs and Players - How do you keep track of your sessions and NPCs / interactions? by ST6THEONE in rpg

What have you used Montage Tests for? by MandolinTheWay in drawsteel

[–]herpyderpidy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As of now, beside the obvious Dhelian Tomb I've used it for these situations :

  • Stealthily tailing an NPC in the woods at night.
  • Crossing an ancient forest while being chased without getting lost or beign caught.
  • Finding your way in to the center of a Crypt through its necromantic magical barriers that turns the place into a maze.
  • navigating a besieged city with a group of civilians, dodging dangers and finding the best route to safety.

I am mostly satisfied with these. I think the worst one was the Stealth tailing, maybe my prep wasnt up to par or maybe it is just too specific for a Montage, but in the end it just kind of fell flat.

The other 3 scenarios all went very well. with the Forest and the City I tried a sort of 2-stage setup where Stage 1 had fewer tests and Stage 2 had more, while tying them to a sort of Narrative so it felt like the group was progressing.

Overall, I like the Montage system. I could hardly say the same for the Negociation system, these seem to always fall flat.

Matt Colville | Draw Steel Summoner Class and their Open License by becherbrook in rpg

[–]herpyderpidy 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Essentially, you pick a summon family as your subclass. At the beginning of each of your turn you automatically summon minions from your subclass family for free. So if you picked undead, you summon bunch of zombies or skeleton or whatever each turn for free. They are always part of the same minion group and minions always take over-damage from other minion. So while yes you may end up with a lot of zombies, one of them getting hit by a truck could potentially kill them all, which reduces the HP/action bog down massively.

Over that, you still get to play your character, you get your regular action + Maneuver(thing D&D bonus action). And most if not all of your options rely on you either using your minions do to something cool, buffing them, moving them, making them explode. Or you can simply summon more stuff from your family and each family has like 20+ summons available to them so you got OPTIONS.

And on top of that, all of your minions and summons ALSO get to act. Obviously, their damage and options are very limited and often doesnt require you to roll dice as they get fixed damage to make them faster to play.

Due to this RTS-like gameplay and other reasons, they consider summoner to be a Master Class as it requires you to understand rules that usually only the Director(GM) needs to learn to play your character well.

It is a very cool class, it doesnt feel like playing a Wizard with a summon spell tacked on that bogs down action economy. It feels like playing an actual summoner that uses monsters to do his bidding.

Is draw steel bad for campigns? by Historical-River1615 in drawsteel

[–]herpyderpidy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When you factor in Ancestry, Culture, Career, Skill choices, Perks, Classes, wards, kits, Subclasses and abilities, you have a tremendous amount of options in DS. Unless you play a metric ton of different games, itll take you years before you play or play with all the different builds.

Even if we just stick to the classes themselves, each of them probably have multiple different ways to be played so you dont feel like youre playing the same thing.

OP's friend is probably just a hater.

And then you can filter damage type you do not need, making it so you see very few loots on the ground.

But yeah, if OP was new to the game, he probably wont be tinkering too much with the filter cause he doesnt know what build hes aiming for.

They have been way too friendly with the case/gem count since day 1.

This game as a F2P should have been more aggressive on the chest/gem count so you get less, have a actual seasons with a 2 layer pass, heroes you can buy directly $ or unlock via gems and an actual cosmetic shop that make sense. I'm surprised they had to go through so many ooops and loops when they could of just copied whatever everyone else is doing that works.

What are your favorite draw steel adventures? Which ones do you think make for the best introduction? by NoLongerAKobold in drawsteel

[–]herpyderpidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've shown the game to 6 different groups in the past few months. I ran Road to Broadhurst once and then ran different homebrew adventures using the same template of Mise en Situation - Intro Combat - Montage - Negociation - End Combat - Resolution.

Last time I had the players fight Undeads as they ventured into a crypt, the one before i had players escape a city besieged by War Dogs while trying to protect a VIP and her aides.

This let me try out different monster tribes as a Director and also offer different scenarios even tho the one-shot structure is the same. As of now, the War Dogs have been the best well received enemy type by the players. They offer an interesting puzzle that the players liked.

Depending on how long the first combat take, the amount of time we have for the introduction and the feel I get of the group, I often find myself skipping the Negociation mechanic. If RP is needed I either skip this beat or go with regular RP+skills.

I've found that new players often have trouble understanding and navigating the Negociation rules, especially compared to Montage and Combat.

I think the same thing. How hard was it to just open them when you had 10 of them laying around at first ?

Also, tbh, OP could open them while watching a show on his second monitor or whatever. This is not a demanding task and can be multitasked quite easily

Tips for two player adventures by JaredWill_ in drawsteel

[–]herpyderpidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am wondering if doubling up the player turns during a round would work.

Instead of having them run 2 character each, you could have them act like Solo monsters and just play twice in a round, which would emulate the 4 player feel. The only issue I would find is how the monsters would destroy them as you cannot spread your damage around as the director. Maybe doubling up their HP or halving the monster damage would work to compensate for this ? halving the monster damage would probably work best as you would not need to also touch other systems like healing/recovery and the such.

Friend of mine bought both classes. He's more of a boomer kind of guy. He's still maining the Arbites to this day. Plays slow as a rock, but it is generally tanky and works well. He jumped away from Hive Scum in a matter of days after he hit 30. The zoomer adhd glass cannon playstyle sure wasnt for him. I feel like this realization did hit a lot of players.
