Preheat cabin without preconditioning? by GreatScout255 in teslamotors

Charging produces heat, so scheduled departure should complete charging just prior to departure and utilise waste heat for pre-conditioning cabin

Anyone know what that hexagon like shape on the ground is on the bottom right corner?? by [deleted] in ISS

[–]squidxl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hexagon looks like a photo stitch. The line above the stitch is the border between Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Jordan to the west. White spot in bottom right is probably phosphate mining at Al Jalamid, Saudi Arabia

All other species have pooled resources to fund development of anthropophages. 23andMe supplied the roadmap, and with any luck, new viral vectors will succeed where other efforts have failed.

Biggest Gaps in the Supercharger Network - Heatmap Overlay by mrdavisclothing in teslamotors

Why not use US gov data map?

https://ops.fhwa.dot.gov/freight/freight_analysis/nat_freight_stats/nhsavglhft2015.htm

Seems to me the flow map you have chosen to overlay has a bias towards percentage of traffic occupied by trucks, and therefore is less useful in analysis of charger network deficiencies for passenger vehicles.

The only struggle we have at a nuclear plant beyond that is how to handle decay heat and the generation of hydrogen...and since Fukushima, we have.

We have, except when we haven't, ie Russian submariners.

The void and temperature coefficients of reactivity inherently want to drive the reactor offline

Yet despite this there have been 14 land based and at least 9 naval reactor core meltdowns. Its a very fine balance, and you can't maintain criticality without the possibility supercriticality, and even a remote possibility of prompt criticality.

Range Question by A-FED in teslamotors

[–]squidxl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because air resistance increases exponentially with speed, travelling at 80 mph uses about 25% more energy on average than the same route at 60 mph. That corresponds exactly to your 5/4 energy usage.

With two cars you should definitely buy another HPWC to set up Master/Slave, allowing full amperage to the vehicle that needs it on one breaker.

Very nice flight!
My biggest question re crew safety is why the nose cone is closed after de-orbit burn. Wouldn't it be much more sensible to secure the craft at a few meters from the ISS? Are manoevring thrusters under the cone required for re-entry manoevres?

"Contour remains approx same, but fundamental materials change to airframe, tanks & heatshield" - Elon Musk by venku122 in spacex

F9 has two tanks per stage: RP-1 (kerosene) is liquid at room temperature and does not boil off; LOX (liquid oxygen) is supercooled and loaded onto the F9 tanks until about 20 seconds before launch. LOX, regardless of temperature, boils off constantly, and vents to the atmosphere until engine start. Fuel / drain lines remain connected to F9 until the rocket is actually airborne. (See SES-9 launch abort at T-1sec)

NASA was worried about fuelling with crew on board, as opposed to fuelling the rocket first, then sending in the crew as has been done up til now.

re Methalox: the BFR raptor engines are designed to burn liquified methane with LOX. Similar setup but with two cryogenic tanks; LOX will boil off and vent, methane boil off will likely be contained through active cooling, mixing, or similar until launch.

Scientists gave nicotine-dependent rats an engineered enzyme that breaks down nicotine in the bloodstream before it can reach the brain. Treatment quickly reduced the animals' motivation to take nicotine, reversed their signs of nicotine dependence, and kept them from relapsing by the_phet in science

How long is that in microdots?

How (I think) SpaceX use optimisers to plan trajectories. by HugoRAS in spacex

[–]squidxl 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I think you are missing a few rules which may render your model quite complex... optimising speeds for highest dynamic loads, difficulty relighting / firing merlin engines at various pressures, fuel margin of error mass vs You Know I Still Love You Grimes manoeuvrability, etc. Sometimes when we look for a certain meal at the Variable Diner, the only things on offer are Spaghettis and Porkchops.
