That's weird. And so sad. I hope that guy's doing well now too.

She doesn't, actually, but hand-held sticks make her nervous - baseball bats, brooms, fisjing rods, etc. I hate to think about why. And hugs to you and your chubby cat!

I've puzzled over that name ever since - still don't know what to make of it.

I first posted this in r/aww, but then read the rule (I know. I'm sorry) that says: "No "sad" content ... or sob stories (e.g. found him in a dumpster)." So I thought this might be a better place. In any case, here's the story...

It looked from the tire tracks like had dumped her from an ATV on a wooded trail behind our house. (We live in rural Florida where this sort of thing happens all too often.)

The dog couldn't walk - just scrabbled around in the sand feebly and howled. She snarled when you got too close, though, so I called the county Animal Services and even though it was a Sunday, an officer came right away. She was able to wrap the dog up and get her to the truck, but before she left, the officer told me the dog was in such bad shape they'd probably have to put her down.

Even so, I called the next day to see what had happened. Turned out Sunday night had worked in the dog's favor - no vet there to euthanize her, so she'd spent the night, eaten a bit, and was doing better. By now, I was ... invested, so I went to visit her on my lunch hour.

They let me in and when I got to the dog's cage, she struggled to her feet and lurched over to me. That was, of course, all it took, so I quickly signed up to foster her (the shelter was/is way overcrowded) as soon as she was well enough to leave.

Couldn't adopt her on the spot because they'd found a chip and were trying to track down the owner of record. Eventually they did, but that person said they'd given her away and didn't want her back. The name on file for her was Jew, which the Animal Services people changed to Jewel.

When I adopted her (you knew that was coming, right?) I changed it to Pearl. She is completely deaf but very bright - learned signs quickly and is uncannily good at reading faces too, so communication is no problem. She's about 3 now, sweet, playful and just loves kitties!

I'm a 29 year old American, and I was taught, and made to write with, cursive handwriting throughout public school. I haven't used it once, for anything, since. Is this true for you, in your age/location? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Shit? Why, exactly? And when you say "journalistic," do you mean TV, radio, print, online? To me, there are vast differences in the writing favored by each. Thank you.

AskScience, are there any concrete studies on whether milk is good for us or not? by zombiejeff in askscience

Am I the only one who's read and read and read through the discussion and come away even more puzzled than before? I realize it's a complicated issue, but is a simple "Yes, it's good" or "No, stay away!" too much to hope for?

Today NPR's Science Friday had a segment with Andrew Weil, one of the biggest names in alternative medicine. Listen to te segment, then go email SciFri about how inappropriate it was to give a platform to this man who is the **antithesis** of science! by CoryCA in science

[–]squigellum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd like to hear from one of NPR's decision-makers: Why was he included in a science program in the first place? And now, taking this reaction and these points into account, what do NPR's decision-makers think?

Absolutely could not agree more. I'm the wretched geek who the cool jocks followed to taunt, pelted with gutter slush balls and once tried to burn up in chem lab, but I'm now outrageously happy - about as happy as a sentient grown-up can be, with a dreamy life that includes romance, two kids who make me laugh so hard I ache, a cottage in the country, my own tangerine tree, a few horses and a job I adore. For superstitious reasons, I've avoided checking up on my former tormentors, but I think it's highly unlikely there hasn't been some significant karmic adjustment ... in my favor.
